I have one of these. I modified the engine bracket to mount the engine inboard to improve balance. Also I welded extensions on the horizontal gimbal to balance the drive system by shifting the center of gravity of the engine away from the pivot point to balance against the mass mass of the long tail. It works perfect! And the tail does not sink: you control the tiller with just light side-to-side pressure

Hi JT. I really enjoy your content. It's very informative. I am super new to mud motors and I am trying to learn which options I should choose for a Beavertail Stealth 2000 sneakboat. Do any of these systems have options for quick detach mounts, so that I can easily take the motor on/off a small sneak boat (e.g. loading/unloading, variations in hunting scenarios, etc.) Thanks for your help!
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Garrett, thank you for your support! So with the swamp runner kit, to remove the engine from the transom bracket, all you have to do it remove a cotter pin and nut and the engine will pull straight up and out of the transom bracket. I can do this by myself with a 13hp engine but its heavy. Anything smaller would be a lot easier.

@@JTgatoring Thanks! Do you have a video which outlines common spare parts and tools that never leave your boat? This would be really helpful as well. One more question: So again, I'm trying to decide what to buy for a small 2-man sneak boat (Beavertail Stealth 2000). The boat itself only weighs 130 lbs. I weigh roughly 275 lbs and would likely be bringing my brother (180 lbs.) on a lot of trips. My goal is to be able to get through a lot of very shallow water/mud, not so much thick grass as in your video on getting yourself unstuck...basically, I still want enough engine to get us around through the muck...I'm not that worried about speed. So based on my situation, do you think you would recommend the mini or the small swamp runner?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
I do not have a video on the usuals I bring with me. I can definitely make it though. For the two man sneak boat. The 1436 alumacraft jon boat you see in all these videos weighs 135lb empty, so that may be better for two people. When you need to go through mud and especially thick vegetation, you need torque. The mini and small just don't have the torque to do it. It will not be able push two guys through mud or grass. It will push you in open water, but not on top of mud or through thick grass. The small on a 6.5hp may be able to push a single man through, but those small engines just do not have the torque to eat up grass or power through pudding. The 13hp is needed to started really moving material. Small would best fit you for your situation. It can be single man or two man operation, light enough to carry yourself, and has more power than the mini. The mini is for going from A to B, only single man operation, very small boat, and then pulling it over or through mud or thick grass.

I would not do it. My transom failed once; so I put the transom plate support on it. It's now bubbling and bending the whole transom and I need to replace the entire transom this fall/winter. Also, the additional weight would make the rear of the boat sit down further in the water, increasing your chances of swamping the boat coming off of plane. I would not recommend putting a vtwin on unless its a 16hp vtwin briggs

How did you make your transom perpendicular to the water to mount your motor? Mine is angled, wondering what your solution was
@JTgatoring

My transom is heavily angled too and is one of the reasons why I chose the Swamp Runner mud motor. This brand of mud motor kit was able to be mounted on that and still run without issue. The transom did start to fail while I was testing some mud motor kits and I had to repair it, but the angle on the transom is the same.

Any insight on the cheap mudskipper/cuppedwing surface drive kits...I believe they are all cks based...are they alright for the money?
@JTgatoring

I just mess around with longtails. I haven't owned a surface drive. Mudskipper used to sell the CKS surface drives but now cuppedwing sells them. Not my cup of tea. The only reason I would like a surface drive is to be able to have reverse and last time I checked, those kits do not have reverse. I think a longtail is better than a surface. After dealing with their product and hearing other people's experiences, I do not recommend them to anyone.

14 ft boat with a 22hp would be too heavy on the back end and the transom would have to be very strong without being too thick or else the transom mount would fit. So I would recommend a 13hp motor on a 1436 jon boat

I have a question. Ive been doing research on differences between the small kits and medium kits. I cant find where it talks about differences. It says differences motor wise but not the actual kit itself. You have really good videos and i want to know the difference between small and medium kits. Could i possibly run a 13hp on a small kit? Or would it not work?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
You would not be able to run a 13hp on a small kit. There are two main differences between kit sizes. Your first difference is the bolt pattern on the bottom of the engine and on the side crankcase cover where the output shaft is (where you coupler bolts too) The bolt patterns are different for each kit size. The second reason is balance. Each kit needs to be balanced and a small kit will not be able to properly balance a medium kit size engine. Don't fight the system. Get the proper size kit that is recommended for your engine size and the setup will ride as it was designed to do

When I considered one of the long tails a few years ago they were not recommended for salt water. Has that changed?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
These motors were originally designed to run in saltwater over in Thailand, hence the name Thai longtail. To answer your question, yes these longtails will run in saltwater without issue. As Jeff McCain said, the engine is sealed and air cooled so it will be alright. For the longtail kit, the shaft seems to be galvanized steel and the inner shaft is steel so it should be alright. I know a few people that run in saltwater and I haven't heard of any issues. If you run a lot in saltwater, I would recommend the Extreme Saltwater series shaft for your kit, because it comes with a stainless steel inner shaft. To maintenance the kit for long-term storage or for heavy saltwater use, every now then take the shaft off of the engine, rinse the outside and inside of the shaft off, stand in up in a buck in a corner, and pour some engine oil down the inside of the shaft and let it drain into the bucket.

What are your thoughts on the Mud-Skipper Twister XL?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Not good. The drivetrain of the Twister is a cable. That is how it makes that bend. I have heard too many people complain of their cable breaking and then getting stranded. Its not reliable when you compare it to a standard Thai longtail like the sps swamp runner, and especially if you plan to use it in rough terrain.

@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your brand of longtail. If you have a swamp runner, they have plenty of performance props to choose from. They would know better than I would for that setup. I know my stock 6.5hp engine can only spin a maximum size of 7" standard. The 13hp can spin a Standard 9" or an 8.5" hurricane prop.

It depends on what you want to do. You can do a 10 footer with a 6.5hp longtail and trolling motor that fits in a truck bed if you just want to fish. If you don't mind having a trailer or would prefer a trailer, then I would go with a 1436 and a 6.5hp engine. You'll be able to get at least 12 mph with a light load and maybe even faster. I am convinced... Not just by your videos but mostly by them. I have been doing research for the last 6 months or so about Jon boats, Mud Motors etc. Jon boat builds etc... I AM GOING TO GET A MEDIUM Kit with a HF 8 HP engine to match it with . I thought about a 13 but many lakes do not allow engines over 10 hp on a Jon Boat etc. because of different rules. Do you think that would be good enough for a 1448 JB just to get from point A to point B for some fishing so I could save my trolling motor from the long runs? OR maybe should I go more with like a 1436 JB. I am also kinda thinking stability as my Wife and Partner has had total Both hips replacement surgery as well as both total knees replaced and just need something to putter around to and from fishing holes with. Haven't got the boat yet BUT I DO KNOW what I am planning on getting as for Christmas ... I still have to tell the wife...lol... BUT I can always get a head start and then tell her I have to get a boat to go with the motor we already have in the garage...
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
So you're set on the 8hp and an SPS medium kit. Check. Now the boat to go with the motor. Needs: stable enough for the wife and go to & from fishing spots to save trolling motor battery. So if you are not worried about speed, and you don't need to go through the swamp and the marsh, and you're just using it as you would an outboard, the 1448 JB will be great. You will need a 100" shaft for the wider boat, but you shouldn't experience any handling issues. The 1436 is stable enough for me but it can rock a bit, especially with two people and if one isn't considerate about the other. I don't know how stable the 1448 will be, but going wider for what you need shouldn't be any problem! Just put a floor in it and your wife should be fine!

It would depend on the mud motor kit you have. You may also want to get a tachometer to make sure that the engine is reaching the full RPM's. You would also have to make sure that the load in the boat is within the load capacity of the hull. I'm 150lbs and my front deck is pretty light and its a riveted boat. You would also have to check the prop size and match it to the load. Your RPM's will tell you what the prop is doing.

How do you know when your motor and shaft is balanced correctly?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring Жыл бұрын
The motor and shaft are balanced correctly when you are able to get on plane, at speed, and be able to pull up on the lever with one finger. The prop finds its place and stays there without any persuasion. At first, when the motor is not running, it will seem like it's tail-heavy where you have to push down on the tiller handle. It is not "balanced" as in the engine weight cancels out the tail weight. If this were true, it would not have enough tail weight to keep the prop in the water and this is how most American-style longtails are "balanced" and also why they need the ride plate above the prop. The ride plate is what keeps the prop in the water on the American-style longtail and the props need to be fully submerged. With a thai longtail, the tail weight holds the prop in the water and the prop is only half submerged where one prop ear is in the water while the other is out. The tail weight goes away on the thai longtail once you start forward progress, the prop will rise and find its place, and the tiller handle will start to feel weightless or "balanced"

@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
The 16hp "name/rating" on the Duramax is just marketing. It is a 420cc engine, same as the Predator 13hp 420cc engine. There is no difference in displacement, or bore, or stoke. I have not heard good things about the Duramax engines but I also haven't used one. @JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
I have not had any experience with the Twister mud motor. I have had many, many people tell me that they would choose a traditional longtail over a twister due to the fact that the Twister uses a cable to turn the prop. Some people say that cable lasts for a year and some say it breaks on the first day out on the water. I wouldn't consider it reliable and would not use one personally unless I was just testing for this channel. If you aren't going to run any vegetation or mud, then the chances of it breaking decrease, but just from researching it and having people contact me about it, most people switch from the twister to a longtail, and normally to a swamp runner longtail because they had a bad experience with mud skipper.

My boat runs hands off the tiller but ready to pull up if need be, you say you need to constantly be pulling up how can you stand that for a long time doesn't your arm get sore perhaps you need to balance it out? That set up matches the boat nice and good to see young people loving the sport I have been at it 30 years don't forget to have fun.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
The bend up is for operating the longtail while standing. The bend in the handle was a modification to the kit to ride better in the modern American jon boat. With the straight handle, if you hit something in the water, making your tail jump, in reaction pushing the handle down, it would bottom out on the seat and dent the seat or bend the handle depending on the situation like jumping a dam or going over timber. "My boat runs hands off the tiller but ready to pull up if need be, you say you need to constantly be pulling up" If you could give me the time code I said that, please add it to the comment because I missed that. Maybe you're referring to @ kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2XUkGlmn7F3p7c - I did say you have to keep constant pressure on the handle while you're not operating it and that's why you need a tie down for the tiller handle, and then I continued on to say that the motor is weightless while on a plane. This set up rides with one finger on the throttle and is very easy to handle. These motors have really started to grab some attention and its definitely awesome to hear the positive feedback from others after they get one. It has treated me great so far!

PPF or Backwater are lightyears ahead of SPS in the durability category. Flimsy skeg, no cavitation plate, painfully long drive shaft...the SPS is just a ticking time bomb.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
You really think so? The skeg is not flimsy on this kit. I can guarantee you that. No cavitation plate (even though its a ride plate) means less to get caught on grass and hung up. The long shaft is too reach the wake behind the boat and keeps the prop inline with your engine's shaft making it more efficient. What would make the SPS or any longtail kit a ticking time bomb?
@mountainstomarshes8966
@mountainstomarshes8966 5 жыл бұрын
@@JTgatoring the cavitation plate is designed to keep the prop right under the water where it is most efficient. A 55-65" shaft will do the same thing speed wise but be far more maneuverable. The SPS picks up more weeds compared to a PPF and Backwater, there are KZbin videos showing it. In terms of a ticking time bomb, look around on Mud Motor forum or Refuge Forums. Guys have handles come loose, bearings go bad, drive shafts cracking, you name it. There is a reason it costs less. I'm not saying it's not functional, but for a couple hundred bucks more you could have a way better setup.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 5 жыл бұрын
@Mountains and Marches I apologize, this message was flagged as spam and I didn't see it. For the cavitation plate and shaft angle, I don't know for sure, but I would think its just as efficient (if not more efficient) behind the boat in that wake. With the sps longtail, the prop rides in that wake and your prop is almost above the waterline so you greatly decrease your chances of hitting submerged objects A shorter shaft would be more maneuverable, but with that angle on the shaft coming out from the engine, it's not as efficient as the straight shaft of a longtail that is in line with the engine. Is it noticeable in speed? I don't know, but I would like to find out. These thai kits do seem to pick up weeds but I'm trying to fix that. I have a solution, but not everyone is going to find that solution. Swamp Runner kit will not have a bearing go bad, or crack a shaft. Maybe on another brand, but I can almost guarantee not on an SPS kit. Handles coming loose can be bad luck or improper installment. Due to the handle and bolts used on the SPS kit, it would be user error for the handle to come loose. There's one bearing in the SPS kit which is in the coupler housing that should always have grease in it, even though the bearing is a sealed stainless bearing, and drive shafts don't crack... an aluminum prop will break before cracking an internal or external shaft. The SPS kit is affordable because it's built in Thailand, and not the US. $400 compared to $1400. That's $1,000 difference... I would argue that the SPS longtail is actually better than a backwater kit too.
