New Mexico resident here, 3 years ago I turned off highway 70 headed to the main gate of White Sands Missile base. I came around a bend and there were a dozen crossing the road like they had all day. Beautiful animals, my neighbor pulled an Oryx tag, it took him a week to get one and he had a quad to cover ground

Once, I decided to take a walk into the forest near my home to enjoy the fresh air and scout a few hunting spots. It was a beautiful sunny day, and everything seemed peaceful. As I ventured deeper into the woods, I felt relaxed and at ease. However, that tranquility didn’t last long. Suddenly, I heard loud rustling behind me. I turned around and saw a large wild boar charging towards me. My heart raced as I realized it felt threatened. In that moment, I had to act quickly. I immediately sought refuge behind a large tree, trying to remain silent and still. The boar paused and looked around, seemingly searching for me. I held my breath, hoping it wouldn’t find me. After a few tense minutes, the boar seemed to lose interest and turned away. Once I was sure I was safe, I cautiously emerged from my hiding spot and made my way back home. I felt incredibly fortunate to have escaped that dangerous situation. From that day on, I learned that while nature can be beautiful, it can also be filled with surprises we can’t foresee

One of the pleasures of living here in New Mexico, however, this year I didn't draw any tags. But can also sharpen my skills on coyotes. I've taken 4 oryx, all shots were placed just on the front part of the shoulder, dead center, DRT. Also, next time, use the leg of a 2nd tripod for rear support. Cup your support hand around the leg with the bottom of the rifle stock just resting against the leg.
@MuleyFreakАй бұрын
The second tripod was being use for cameras, but thanks for the advice! Happy hunting!
@elkbowАй бұрын
@@MuleyFreak I realize there is a camera tripod, I said use a 2nd tripod to stabilize the rear. If you don't know what I mean, watch some precision rifle match videos. We use a tripod sometimes for rear support, usually when you're resting the front on something that isn't very stable. You have to admit a 250 yard miss wasn't just because of the tripod.

How are deer and elk ruined?
@elkbowАй бұрын
@@riograndereaper not exactly how it stacks up. Yes, there is a percentage for non-resident's, but then there are landowner tags, which are identified as closed ranch or open ranch. If a landowner lists their tags as open ranch, they can be used anywhere in the unit of the ranch and many are sold to non-resident's. And the issue is, it's hard for your to know/research where their land is, and that it's designated open ranch. In the end, there are far more then 8% tags going to non-resident's. Granted, I'm not sure if there are oryx landowner tags allocated, but other species like elk, this is a huge issue.

@@MuleyFreakyes it’s does. Nonresident take away from the allotted licenses especially for oryx. It’s not a secret anymore.
@phild9813Ай бұрын
Please clarify. From what I understand, up to 6% of tags go to non-residents and 10% to outfitters, which could be resident or nonresident. That seems like a fixed maximum proportion of licenses that are available for nonresidents. What am I missing? Ten million nonresidents could apply for oryx tags and the same number gets awarded as if 100 applied.
@andrewfresquez1152Ай бұрын
@@phild9813 The amount of money nonresident pay for orxy. The Game and Fish will likely pull your application. It’s about money. Well here in NM our game and Fish aren’t giving NM there allotted amount of tags. We’re supposed to get 84% but an audit was completed and we are only get about 68 % so nonresident are getting more than their fair share. Are game commission are appointed. So everytime a commissioner brings up the problem. The Governor gets rid of them. Why? It’s money. Because they contribute to their campaign or some type of favor. Plus outfitter’s say they need money because they bring in revenue for the State. Like hotel stays, buy rifles, basic needs. It’s worse for elk hunting. Nonresident fees for an orxy tag is $1623.00. That’s pretty high. If you draw a tag on the range you have to pay range fees and background checks. So when your hunts starts nonresident have paid about $2000 . Also on the range they can move your hunt a hundred miles away because they might be conducting exercises. Also your hunt can be cut short. You have attended an orientation class. The 1st day. Off range is different. You have a month to hunt. That’s where you hire an outfitter. So that’s extra. Off range they only give 96 tags. So nonresidents are supposed to get about 7 tags but I’m sure it’s higher. The amount of people that apply for orxy tags are the 2000 for each hunt. Maybe higher. It’s higher for on range applicants. Our game and fish is about money. That’s how they function is through draw hunts. They get a budget each year but it’s not much from the State. So let’s give nonresident tags. 10 nonresident tags gives the State $16,230. Compared to residents. 86 tags. At $160 equals $13,760. So it’s better to give nonresident tags.

You give 10 out of 70 licenses allotted that’s equal $16230. 00Residents license is $160.00 x 60 remaining licenses equals $9600.00 . Nonresident probably get more than 10.
