BEST knife Grind? Scandi vs. Flat vs. Saber vs. Convex.

Of course loaded question. Depending on personal use. I’ve used scandi the most all my life coming from land of Puuko. But I like many grinds: flat, convex etc. Nevertheless, Scandi gets overall most use. To put a clichee: theres a perfect Grind for everybody:) Cheers🌲🔪🌲

I was just thinking where the hell is sissipuukko when you brought it up. Just such a good all round grind for a knife. I can't say I do a lot more food prep in the forest than opening a packet of noodles..I think I generally gravitate towards a high scandi. I also am really digging the convex grind on my Joker Nomad. Not the easiest to sharpen though. Writing as I watch here😂. The Nomad is good, might actually be cheaper to get one shipped from Spain. Very brave subject to cover, not the simplest and so much down to our own personal preferences. Great video as always buddy. By the way I have a Eräpuu tuohitako in the post.

Yeah, Im such a moron not bringing the Sissipuukko with. Use it at the moment much more than Wilderness Explorer. Peltonen is Great knife, and true workhorse. I also prefere High Scandis. Thats why I probably like the Tommi also so much. And sharp high scandis can be more comfortable imo with food than, flat grind thats thick behind the edge etc. But the food prep. outdoors is not very high in priorities anyways. I like Convex grinds, but goddam they can be annoying also. (depending of course of the blade profile etc). Bravo 1.25 was ok right away but The Bark River Gunny was such a pain in the ass to get a nice bevel, sharp edge and usable blade geometry, being also tough 3v steel. Now its ok, but such a struggle, lol😂 Will definitely buy the Joker Nomad pretty soon. Looks like a winner. Looking forward your review of Eräpuu! Thanx for watching Tim, have a great day!🌲🔪🌲

I used the Sissipuukko M95 a lot during the army and after it. I got the Jääkäripuukko 140 around a year ago because it's very similar. I noticed that for some reason it felt strange in comparison, but couldn't get my head around why it was so... It was only this summer when I realized that the old versions of the Sissipuukko have a flat grind, not a saber. (Yeah, I know. I feel dumb it took me that long to notice). Both are excellent knives, but the thinner flat ground Sissipuukko does feel more multi purpose though. I'm glad I have the old one, giving more variety between the knives. Anyways, another great video as always.

Interesting discussion. I've always carried and used knives for various tasks, but I haven't really thought that much about the various grinds. Over the past few months I have picked up several knives and I am learning to appreciate how the grind can affect the knife's ability to complete tasks efficiently. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

yeah its a interesting, and NEVERENDING topic😂. And I mean I go back and forth with my general preferences (though Scandi is my most used one no doubt). Noticed theres periods Im buying more full flat blades and then periods, im back in to Scandis. Its nice to have variation. And of course depending on the season also of course. Interesting...you have the Scandi imprinted on you as a child. My early years where similar to your environment but I started with Axes and/or Hatchet’s. I remember hearing all the mountain man stories then came our first TV. What was popular then was John Wayne, Clint Eastwood westerns and war movies. My first real knives where military surplus field knives similar to the KaBar USMC. Then it was the Solingen German “Bowie Clip” hunting knives with stag handles. Of course I only knew how to sharpen an axe so all my knives became convexed edges anyway. Scandi is new to me and I have yet to gel with them. They get to thick to fast for me. One of my favorites at the moment is the Brisa Trooper that when new was amazing with wood. It’s like a high Scandi grind with a micro bevel. I need to resharpen it like a true Scandi and see if it holds up.

My favorites turned out to be mid to high flat ground knives for general use. (sabre grinds) sabre convex for larger or wood processing knives, then saber hollow grinds for hunting or food prep. And of course I gravitate towards “Bowie Clips”. What I would carry of yours would be your Puukko and BR Wilderness Explorer and a small saw. Or your Puukko and a small hatchet.

Yeah it definitely was imprinted o me, lol. And cant get rid of it😂. I've been actually a huge fan of Westerns all my life. There isnt really many I haven't seen😃 Good stuff! An interesring topic for sure. I also prefer scandi grinds. I grew up with Moras so thats likely why. But I've had all kinds of knives and grinds too, so I like them all for what they are. I just got a sissipuukko. It's amazing. I bought mine totally in green - just because I could. 😁 It's an amazing knife and I love the grind. But... Is it a sabre grind or a scandi with a large secondary bevel?!? Lol! Whatever it is, its awesome! Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah! Glad you like the Sissipuukko!! Will do the interview with Peltonen at some point. Not only designer, but one of the biggest figures of modern Finnish puukko culture, founder of Puukko society (ofcourse im part of it😃), founder of Puukko festivals here in Fiskars. Nice guy. I find the thicker blade skandis are not as versatile as a skandi on something like a Mora Basic 511 or 546. The thind blade stock makes it more of an all rounder, still good for carving. A slight convex to the edge helps strengthen the simpler steel. Once a blade gets too specialized then you need to bring more than one along, though that is also fun as long as your are not worried about weight.

Shoulve include Mora also here. Cant carry all my knives, lol😂 Yeah, that is something I like in Mora, not too thick. Definitely, when knives get too specialized they loose the purpouse of outdoor knives. Its the sweet spot everybody is looking, and I its different to different people. Thanx for watching!🌲🔪🌲
