Tried explaining why most of my knives are scandi..it’s bc..everything sharp and shiny can cut and stab..BUT…in a survival situation…we are going to need a tool that cuts wood…I mean..yes in the beginning…if we are fully “prepared” for it..we would have a rifle..and or pistol to hunt..but then do we have forks and spoons..and tent pegs..and _____ insert essential equipment here..and if we have begun to thrive..the scandi works wood better for notches…and tool making…while still having the ability to cut and poke thing that aren’t wood…not saying all the other grinds can’t work wood…personally…carry a few knives in this sort of situation…MOST would say I carry WAY too many knives…they’re losers…and I turn my nose up to such blasphemers…so…

This was a wonderful historical lecture. Thank you. I've noticed there is some negative perception out there that what we call "Bushcraft" nowadays has become very commercial and inauthentic. Part of that criticism comes from a school of thought that on the American Frontier of the 19th century, Frontiersmen used axes for wood and belt knives for skinning game. However, from everything i'm learning about Nordic knife history, Sami people used Leukuus for processing wood instead of an axe. I'm wondering if Finnish, Scandinavians and Russians also used Puukko for processing wood. It seems to me that the high scandi grind knives have been used for centuries to process wood, and that just because different tools were used in America, doesn't mean that using a knife to prep a fire, split wood etc. is a new, trendy "bushcraft" idea. Do you think this is true?
@OldForestBushcraft
@OldForestBushcraft 2 күн бұрын
Very interesting take by you. And actually very accurate. In Finland Puukkos were always used for wood processing. As well as for hunting, fishing. So they were by design, multi purpouse outdoor knives, survival knives even, if you will. So the type of "modern" bushcrafting you mentioned is indeed very authentic, and old, at least in here in nordic countries. Many Finns, me included, learned at very young age were taught to work with puukko, to do Basic wood processing, carving, feathers etc. I should actually do a video of old nordic bushcraft traditions.. Continue my history of Puukko in that sense:) Thanx for watching, have a great day!🌲🔪🌲

I havnt tested this myself, so I can’t say for sure if it works, but on Brisa’s website you can buy a sheath called “Nordic sheath L” for 14 euros which looks very similar to the erapuu sheaths which I know work well with this knife. Otherwise I’ve found that putting masking tape around the lip and folding it inward into the sheath can help with the retention

Looks like a good knife. Hard to find one and more expensive when I find one, than I feel I should be spending on another knife. I spent most of my life looking for the perfect knife for my use. There is no such thing, however I have came very close with the Tommi Puukko by the Kemppainen Brothers, Alpo (AK) and Olavi (OK). I feel that they made the most perfect blades for my use. I think both of these brothers have retired, but I was able to get ten of their blades prior to that. I have slowly over the years made most of them into Puukko’s with birchbark handles and birchbark sheaths for my sons and my best of friends. Knee deep snow here in interior Alaska, tonight the temperature is -40°. Nice to sit by the fire, watching your videos. Daylight here has gained 30 minutes per day since the Winter Solstice. Enjoy your longer days, stay warm and dry.

Yes, the same here! Im on a constant search for the perfect blade for me, which obviously doesn't exist. Wow, I know the Kemppainen blades are highly regarded! I saw one in our annual Antique Fair here in Fiskars.(You'd probably go bonkers there, massive amount of puukkos. Some really rare ones) Regretting not buying it. Was just well over limits or spending. Oh man, that sounds awesome, your Alaskan nights by the fireside. The nature must be gorgeous there! Here came yesterday lots of snow. So starts to look like proper winter. Thanx for watching my friend, have great day there on the otherside of the pond!

Good question! I have the Bravo 1.25. Great knife for sure. Never tried their Lt versions but always thought probably going to be great one. As they are so thick blades, the Lt probably an improvement, I do like Bark rivers Convex grinds, but I have to say overall like more LT Wrights knives. The handle on Bravo is not that good really. @Rob-pv4zc
@Rob-pv4zc 8 күн бұрын
I have the Lagom (as well as the Genesis and the GNS), and I am not a fan of the Lagom’s handle. Profile is much different than either the Genesis or GNS, but some folks love it. Great knife with its blade profile, I just couldn’t get over the handle. But for those who love that handle, it’s a great knife.
@OldForestBushcraft
@OldForestBushcraft 8 күн бұрын
Good question! I love the Lagom, but I've noticed I use it mainly as a kind of everyday edc. Great, more lightweight than GNS, Genesis. Fantastic carver etc. But I noticed that I prefer maybe tad longer blade when I go to the woods for longer time. But I do take it with me sometimes. The handle seems to divide people. I like it a lot. Kind of a modern, full tang edc Puukko. If that makes any sense. Thanx for watching my friend, have a great day!

Great knife. I couldn’t decide between the Genesis or the GNS, so I decided to do the only logical thing and get both too. They’re both extremely capable knives, but for some reason I prefer to use the Genesis for heavier duty stuff. The GNS is my favorite for cleaning fish, since it just feels a bit less bulky for that kind of work.

I've had one of these for a long time by nows, and much like with more Eldris, I love it as an artifact, but have very little use for it as a tool. Much like you, I bought it for the leuku cool factor. Sure, it isn't a bad chopper, and you can baton it but I don't trust it with more brute tasks, like chopping bones or clearing undergrouth, and it isn't particulary good at batoning either (from my experience, it's comparable with mora kansbol). I've actually destroyed one in past - the blade chiped on dry pine knots. My small eräpuu puukko on the other hand got a metric tonn of use over the years! And my sissipuukko as well. Any suggestions for a leuku project/use?
