I slip a black sock over the jar.. easy to slip down to see what is going on and fit snugly.

I think I would place a smal strip of tape on the jar, vertically, before the gesso & paint. Then remove it once it’s all dry. It would be a sliver to enable you to see the nutrient Walter level without removing the net cup to look. And risk damaging the roots. Also shouldn’t you soak the stones first? Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Just use a pool noodle on top. It is cheap. No net cups. just put your plant in the slit of the pool noodles that will hold. Use the open mason jar tops that already have the opening at the top.

putting the puck in the net cup makes refill much easier. I'd still recommend pool noodle, and no hydroton. Neat video.

@@BeardedBotanist my net cups all have a wider hole at the bottom so the pebbles would possibly shake through. And they're just a little too thicc under the band and don't fit down as perfectly as yours. Thanks for the detailed steps. If I've got the dark grey chalk paint, do you think its worth using black gesso, or is the white going to block enough light, in your opinion?

if anyone has a friend with a 3d printer -- give them a job to create the perfect netcups for you! I have created many that will be securely and simply held in underneath the mason jar cap ring, and also include the hole you need for air. Also, since we are able to design anything we can imagine, a float gauge is a very useful addition to your 3d printed custom mason jar net cup! I have also printed myself sleeves for outside of the jar to block out the light, but allow me to screw the cover off and lift out the jar so I can peek at the roots whenever we want!

Subbed, for your gardening AND your upcoming boat life. Saw you shake your jar and water come out though, see my other comment about custom netcups! You could still use your foam piece/neoprene collar (i just use pipe insulation cut into slices), but if you had solid plastic lining the outside diameter of the lid, you would spill a lot less water in your boat. If 3d printed we could also add an upper lip! This would funnel any water your pour on it, into it, but also obviously stop water spilling if your boat-a-rockin! Reach out to me and I'll CAD design and/or print for anyone. Solving problems and perfecting designs are my passions

I personally would have flipped around the color layers. I would prefer a black prime layer on the glass, and then white on the outside to reflect light. You don't want these jars getting hot! and they definitely can whether you use LED, HID, or sunlight. I've tried plasti-dip and also flexseal, which work great for a simple one-coat light block, on glass or anything else.

It’s not primer it’s gesso it helps paint stick to glass. I would prefer white too but some white let’s some light in. Although in my experience little light through white containers is not that bad in hydroponics

Why does it say $2?
@rccoh777
@rccoh777 Жыл бұрын
Cuz it's about $2 worth of materials per jar... $1 jar, 50 cents for net cup, 25 cents worth of pebbles, and 25 cents for the collar. The paint is pennies per jar and is optional and/or you can use spare materials. Cost about $2 a jar...

Mason jars??? I can do that using plastic soda bottles. It's just a redesign in the self-watering soda bottle planter. No more soil and water wick. Use a soldering iron to make lots of holes so roots can go through. Transplant it the Kratky method... And fill up with water to the desired amount. Cover the outside to prevent algae.

it hurt to watch you work so hard. Just use black chalk spray paint and painting the jars takes about 1 min a piece. No need for primer or anything.
