ME Student here. If you're looking to get a laptop, go for windows!! I got a mac a few years ago, before I decided to do engineering, and it is good enough for you lower div classes, but once you get into some of the later classes in the program you start to have issues cause more often than not the software is only available for windows.
@simdevils4 жыл бұрын
You could get windows via bootcamp. I am booting windows from an external SSD, whenever I need it.

@simplyNimal4 жыл бұрын
IdeaPads are usually pretty good for basic use from internet to Excel crunching. It may not be spectacular for rendering intensive CAD programs, but it can still get the job done nevertheless. Overall, I would recommend it if you can't afford models like Zenbook or XPS.

Nice! Do you think it's a good idea to have an external monitor and keyboard/mouse in the dorms at Purdue?
@harisubramanian02074 жыл бұрын
/is there enough space for it?
@simplyNimal4 жыл бұрын
If you do want an external monitor in your dorm, then you will have to loft your bed. Getting a mouse is worth the investment, but I’d say keyboard/monitor are totally optional.

Very helpful to see a student review of the XPS 15 7590! How is the battery life with the 4K display? Do you think that stylus input is useful on a clam-shell laptop like this one? I am considering getting the same laptop, but not sure whether to get the 4K-touch or the FHD display.
@simplyNimal4 жыл бұрын
With the 4k display, I would expect the battery life to be not as great since the screen will suck up the battery power. In terms of getting the stylus input, it may help for scrolling through long PDFs, but maybe not the best device for 2-in-1 note-taking. I opted to get the FHD model instead because I really didn't care about getting a 4k screen (standard UHD screen is just as good if not better than the 4k model) and I really cared about the battery life. It was kind of long explanation, but hope that helps!!!

What are you thoughts with Huawei Matebook D15, Asus X507, and Samsung Notebook 9 pro for running softwares like CAD and adobe editing softwares?
@huliaxjulia4 жыл бұрын
I have an Asus zenbook 15 UX533FD and it’s great WHEN IT WORKS. I’ve had it for about a year and I’ve had to bring it into the store 3 times for fixes (battery at 300%, blue screen, unresponsive utility screen). I did my research and this laptop has great specs but because I’ve been having so many issues with it, it’s made me consider trying to get a refund for it which is a big disappointment.

What's your thought on the MSI GS66 or the GS75? They have an amazing GPU. I also thought about the new Dell XPS 15, but that one has very limited ports and I don't know if its GPU will be powerful enough for my studies. I will work with SolidWorks, but I'm also planning to run the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on it. Great video👍🏼
@simplyNimal4 жыл бұрын
Just from the looks of it, the MSI GS66 is pretty solid. Like you said, the number of ports greatly trumps XPS 15, so I'd say it's definitely a good (but hefty) investment if you want a powerful machine for work and play.
@michaelakaw.i.e.86934 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wanted to get the GS66 for around 2k, but it's out of stock at the moment. The Dell has definitely a better warranty than MSI. I heard MSI has tragic service. I've also heard some good stuff about the Lenovo Thinkpad.

If you’re running CAD programs on MacBook with your specs, it should be fine. Just make sure there aren’t any compatibility issues with MacBook itself when running them.

I’d say you should lean towards windows if you’re working with CAD and don’t want any hassles, but it’s not impossible on Mac; you just have workarounds.
@adrianescalante83133 жыл бұрын
Bootcamp or Parallels will have to be a must in order to run most (if not all) CADs. -coding softwares won’t be an issue if you go Mac tho Im in my 4th and last year of Aerospace Engineering and wish I had a windows OS system these past two years. Mac is 2x more expensive for an aesthetic that doesn’t perform up to bar for a competing laptop (in Specs) that costs $1000 less. 😳

Which one will work better for an engineering student, Asus Vivobook S14 or Dell Inspiron 14 5490?
@simplyNimal4 жыл бұрын
I would say the Asus Vivobook would be a better option than the Inspiron due to the extended battery life and the capability of handling intensive tasks for engineering students. However, if you want the ability to customize your machine, I'd say get the Inspiron instead since the Vivobook doesn't have the ability to customize things like RAM.
