Side note on this, invest in a decent dashcam. 100 bucks can save you a ton. Cops who write the report on the accident rarely see it take place and usually attribute some responsibility to each driver as both parties involved will claim it wasn't their fault. Dashcams take the he said she said out of it and make your life and your lawyers job a lot easier.

Hey, some rainbows are still made in San Clemente USA where they were founded. The state of California banned the glue that they use to hold the sandal straps together but they are authorized to make only so many in a year at the factory that you can buy them from. They also have a double foam version for even softer and more cushion.

@@ah5721 I'm a big guy, with a wide foot (11E to EE on Brannock device) and an 11 fits me great and the thick rubber (neoprene?) pad is extremely comfortable. The wife finds hers comfortable too, but the women's sandal line has a much thinner cushion pad / sole on them versus the mens, I assume for a more feminine look, so probably are less comfortable than the men's line? Can't comment on durability - most of my life is spent in steel toe boots, so the sandals only see post-work and weekend wear. Can't see why they wouldn't last a long time?

Olukais are hands down the best. Been wearing them since about 2016. Wear them almost every day putting hundreds of miles on them and have had about 4-5 different pairs. The stability and support is actually what I like. Being similar to a sneaker makes them comfortable to walk here and there. Going to the grocery store, the beach, fishing, or working. My feet never hurt wearing them. The fact that they are hard and rugged works for me because I fish a lot and don’t want hooks in my feet. Olukais over everything.

Something that occurred to me about the Olukais: If I remember correctly, they are meant as beach sandals, so they’re assumed to get wet from more than sweat and potentially salt water. Could the leather being not absorbent actually be a plus to the leather’s lifespan under such use? Makes me think of the Red Wing oil-tanned leathers in all the rain we get. As far as the hardness, if I recall part of the design philosophy is that they are supposed to withstand walking on the lava rock in Hawaii. My mom has always preferred rugged sandals like Chacos, and I have seen her walk miles in Olukai flip flops, which she has owned the same pair since I want to say 2006. According to her, the exposed stitching helps prevent her foot from sliding. So it seems to me that the Olukais perform extremely well as a sandal that is very protective against sharp rocks and other dangerous surfaces
@kimball_stone
@kimball_stone Жыл бұрын
I wear the same model Olukais that are in this video. Definitely can attest to the fact that they've saved me from all kinds of foot injuries while living the beach life in various parts of Mexico. I probably would've broken a couple toes already in a soft sandal like the others. That said, the more tropical the climate gets, the less comfortable they are to wear for longer walks, because the leather saturates pretty quickly in the humid, sweaty environment, and starts chafing between the toes.

Olukai’s sandals are the best I’ve ever owned hands down. Yea they take a little bit longer to break in but once they’re molded to your foot they’re as comfortable as anything you can buy with the added benefit that they literally last forever. I’ve had mine for almost 10 years and they’re still as solid as the day I bought them. If Olukai would make their shoes just a little bit better looking they’d be one of the top shoe companies in the US bc they’re easily the most comfortable. Bc of their price & the fact I don’t like how they look I don’t buy them but most of my family swear by them.

I got a pair of the southern polished and they are the most comfortable sandals out of the box that I have ever had. Between the thick leather, the quality if which you can feel through the soles of your feet, and the soft foot bed they start to feel broken in almost immediately. Looking at the construction I'm thinking that they can easily be resoled as long as they are not worn through the outsole. To me it is worth the extra money to support the "made in America " effort that Trenton and Heath have established.

I've been wearing my pair of OluKais for about 12 years now - usually a few days per week during the summer. They are still holding strong, though showing wear. Like other people mentioned, they're great if you want to wear them for a long time/all day. The leather on the outside has held up through sand/water on beach and lake days. I've thought they were comfortable since I got them, and they replaced my 10-year pair of Birkenstocks. 100% would buy another pair and recommend.

I've been wearing Rainows for over 10 years and all I can say is once you get past the initial break-in (it sucks) they last a long time and the comfort is unmatched! Being a SoCal near-native, Rainbows are my go-to footwear for about 85% of the year. I only wear shoes or boots when I feel like I have to. I've been wearing Rainbows for 20 years now since college. I bought my first pair at their location in San Clemente and I still go down there to buy new pairs. I wanna say they were still made in the US back then. My first pair gave up the ghost after about 10 years of pretty constant wearing and I now have two pair that I rotate between. The first I have been wearing constantly for about 5 years. I'm fairly certain those are from the China-made era and don't seem like they will hold up quite as well as my originals, but they are still sturdy and comfortable. That said, while Rainbows are very comfortable, molding to your feet, the break in period is chafe city so I've nicknamed them "Painbows" for that period. I like the idea of made in the US too, but unless the quality drops off a cliff, I think I will always have a pair or two of Rainbows.

I've had Rainbows and Olukais and absolutely loved them both. For me, the Olukai was more of a fancy "dress" slippah type thing that when in Hawaii I could wear to fancier places just because the look of the leather and the style of the outsole lends itself to that kind of vibe, whereas the Rainbow was just a casual do it all kind of slippah. I would buy either one again. Now though you've got me seriously considering the Southern Polished as it seems like a great mix of the two things I loved most individually about my Olukai and Rainbow sandals. The beautiful leather and the every day comfort as well as the great craftsmanship seems like a win to me. Thanks for this video and keep up the good work.

The luxury leather sandals are made in California. I emailed Rainbow before ordering. They prioritize their USA made sandals for online orders now, and you can tell the difference based on the material of the sole. The sole on the Cali Rainbows are a soft rubber. The Chinese made version has a harder, plastic-like sole. Hope this helps P.S. I had never heard of Southern Polished before. I always look for as much made in USA stuff as I can get. The $30 difference would be an issue, but I don't doubt that I'll end up with a pair at some point. I like what I saw in the video and I want to support as many American companies as possible.

@@MichaelWilliams85 arch supports do feel a little awkward when they’re brand new & require some breaking in but once they are they’re far more comfortable than flat footbeds. Also not having it in your shoes is not good for your feet & it’s even worse if you have flat feet bc your ankles turn in. You should find a cheap pair of shoes or sandals that have a medium grade arch support and give them a try man. The only arch supports I’ve ever truly hated were the Birkenstock sandals which are ludicrously high and I have pretty big arches in my feet -so much so that brands like Adidas don’t really fit the shape of my feet & cause the bottoms of my feet to ache. Nike is the only major brand I can wear without having to get inserts.

They have been serving me for around 2-3 years now. still holding up well, with the exception of the soft foam getting really thin under heel. The whole sandal is molded to my foot to the point that they do not look as good due to all the curving and bowling. I still love them and will buy another pair not long in the future. I own rainbows, Olukais, and reefs. I do not like my olukais and hardly ever wear them consequently. The leather is very slippery underfoot but the model I have (ohana I believe) does have good arch support and a pretty solid lug style outsole. They are pretty good quality but because they aren’t comfortable even after several years of use, I gave up on them. While I don’t necessarily consider reefs poor quality because I can usually get several years of use out of them, they are probably more comparable to the Amazon shoes you tested. Once they get completely soaked they start breaking down more quickly. Very comfortable but it feels like by the time they really get broken in, they’re already starting to wear out. Rainbows take time to break in. To me, they’re the red wing heritage equivalent in the sandal world in that regard. The break in sucks, your feet hurt, you get blisters and rubbing in the toe box area, but once you get there it’s 100% a perfect mold to your foot and nothing beats them because they are so comfortable ! They are really durable and hard wearing, and pretty inexpensive. Only wish they were made in the USA. Nevertheless I pretty much strap on my rainbows in May and don’t take them off until October. I’ve been wearing the same pair for 3 years and aside from being broken in now, still look brand new! I plan to give the southern polished a shot as well to support American manufacturing!

Born and coming from a sandal/slipper culture, I wear them every time and anywhere. I used to be a big Olukai leather sandal fan but the last great Olukai were made some 10-12 years ago which I always wear them to the ground with zero issues. Every single one of the newer Olukai I have bought have been garbage. The toe strap is the first one to go just inch by inch or rather millimeter by millimeter starts to pull out and until it hangs by a thread and this always happen before the warranty ends. I have 3 pairs of the newer ones with pulled out toe strap to prove this with soles that's pretty much almost no wear yet. One of those 3 newer pairs I bought didn't even last the duration of my month and a half vacation. What I found out was when you introduce their newer leather sandals to water you will certainly have issues with the toe strap pulling out. The older ones do not have that issue and I wear them on the beach and in the water. They just don't make them like they used to.

Olukais are a different kind of sandal. Meant to be lived and walked in a lot more than a beach sandal like the rainbow. I’ve had both and my olukais are 6-7 years old and still holding up.

I'm currently wearing a pair of OluKais leather sandals that I bought in 2010 (13 years ago) when they were under US$100. They've survived beaches on 4 continents, chlorinated pool water, 7 years of Hong Kong humidity, mildew, and walking on hot sidewalks. They've been even beaten the toughest test: a mother-in-law who likes to scrub them with scouring powder😅. That being said, the leather's extremely polished now and they get a little slippery when wet. Thanks to this video I'll be giving the Southern Polished a try soon. I hope they serve me for as long as this pair has.

Love my Rainbows, took a while to break in, but well worth it, form fits to your foot really nice. The arch support makes my feet feel fresh, even after a long day of wearing them.

I have been wearing rainbows for years and I love them. I tend to find them on sale for 50% off at the end of summer and will pick up a pair then. I don't care to spend a lot for sandals or slippers just good enough to be comfy and last and rainbows have that well.

I have olukai flip-flops, and I really like them. The arch support fits my instep well, and the firmer “shoe-like” feel is nice if I’m gonna wear sandals for more than just 10 or 15 mins in the garage.

I wore my olukai's (That exact model) for just shy of 2000 HARD miles, almost 100% carrying a 40lb backpack on hard trails to rock climbing spots before the toe separator started to chip off and give me blisters. They still work for short walks, and just replaced them. The new pair however came entirely apart on the first day - hoping that's a warranty defect - we'll see!

Have to say that I have worn Olukais (a different model) while actually hiking in various places. Once they break in, some of their soles are like having a lightweight hiker Vibram-esque feel. I recognize that's not what everyone is looking for, but for that use case for me they are a hell of a sandal. Good to see that they are still well constructed, if a little different, through the tests.

i have the Southern polished...i figured I would support the guys since I watch all their videos....i am used to Nike rubber sandals so these take a little getting used to wearing because they are stiffer....I am glad they did well on the review too because they are good guys...I have to break the sandals in some more, just like a baseball glove and I am sure they will be great after a few more months of wearing (when the warm weather gets here in central NY)

Well done. I have had Rainbows. I have had OluKais. I wear Oofos now. Very comfortable and easy to clean in the shower. Very slippery though. They market them as recovery sandals. They are so slippery you may end up in recovery after busting your ass on wet tile. OOfos are comfy and convenient but a little expensive and dangerous. I just love the comfort. I wish they would put a rubber sole on them though.

I just purchased my 3rd pair of Rainbow sandles this evening 1/9/24. My first pair was a gift from my Mom as a young teenager. I eventually grew out of them and my Mom wore them after me as her feet are smaller. They lasted over 10 years. My second pair, which I purchased to replace my first pair, lasted 14 years of heavy, daily use in Hawai'i. I know and trust Rainbow sandals and am very confident that my new pair will last me another decade at least! I can't recommend them enough. Edit: I just looked into the Southern Polished sandals and they only carry men's sizes starting at a men's size 8. That's unfortunate as they seem to be very high quality and on sale for $89 as of today. If they make smaller sizes in the future, I'll definitely pick up a pair. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I found on their website.

The leather Olukais are great. I have put my pair through hell and back for the last 3 or 4 years and they are still holding up very well. They are a bit hard at first and there is definitely is a break in period but once they conform to your feet they’re extremely comfortable. It would actually be pretty weird for me to go back to a squishy/softer sandal. The leather got pretty dry at one point as I have exposed them to saltwater, sand and sun quite a bit. I washed them off, let them dry, applied some of Hanks Belts conditioner and they look as good as new.

I've had a pair olukai sandals for a over a decade and a pair of shoes for 4 years. I wear both often, and they are holding up really well. I've put the sandals through a whole lot including hikes through creeks and out to remote lakes here in Alaska. I'd like to retire them to house shoes this year and switch to sandals that have ankle straps. The shoes have been more for casual wear on days off, but nothing too extreme, so I'm thinking they'll easily get another decade of wear.

As a person that wears flip flops most of the year and has for years, this review and criteria don’t really mean much when comparing quality products. I have owned many brands over the years. I have Southern Polished and Olukai and have put way more miles on both than most people ever will. Ultimately it comes down to comfort and durability, and in that order for me. Both are well made, but when broken in, the Olukai flops that I have are my go to. They are definitely a different feel than the others and I love them. Both are very well made. The Olukai just feels better the longer you have them.

I have an original pair of the Potter & Sons sandals for over one year. The straps have been holding up well, the footed leather has molded to my foot and is not slippery and do not cause the soles of my feet to sweat so traction is good. While the Vibram soles wear well and provide a good walking surface

Olukai Tuahine would have probably been a better comparison since it's more in line with the style of the other flip flops you picked and it's priced right at $100. I've owned Rainbows back in highschool and college and loved them, but wasn't a fan of them the last decade. Tried out a ton of different leather flip flops throughout the years as a lifeguard earlier in life, and now enjoy them on the weekends or when I'm working from home and want some support. I own almost exclusively Olukai at this point. (not to say every item they have a great, I HATE the Ulele as I've almost rolled my ankle half a dozen times wearing them. But they aren't leather anyways so that doesn't apply to this channel). The Mekila model you showed I found to be the least comfortable, but the nicest looking. Wore it to nice meals while traveling near the beach, but outside of that, it's not a go to grab. The Tuahine will be most people's go to everyday wear. It's similar to both Southern Polished and Rainbow in design, but has a little more options for colors. They do form to your feet, unlike the Mekila. They aren't as arched and sneaker like as the Mekila, but just like with Southern Polished and Rainbows, you feet mold to the Tuahine's.

For me, the biggest thing that ALL Olukais have going for them is how well they fit the shape of my foot. Obviously that's a personal thing, but it outweighs pretty much any other factor (within reason).

We live in Florida so my husband sports a flop flop year round. (I work boots for work for the better part of 12 years and can't seem to break the habit of close toed shoes now). Rainbows were the go to for a long time. The last 2 pairs ended up breaking on him though. The last pair that broke was during a canoe trip and our friend threw him his Olukai's he had brought along as camp shoes. Needless to say, my husband loved them ao much, we bought a new pair for our friend, and a back-up pair for my husband. Its been 3 years and they are still going strong with daily wear.

I love my Rainbows. I grew up at the beach in SoCal. Love wearing flip flops. I currently have two pairs I bought at the San Clemente store. My single layer is for in house only. My double layer is for outside. I feel like Mr. Rogers when I come home and switch flip flops. The double has great arch support. I love how well the Rainbows mold to my feet. I also have some Havianas that I like but no where near the quality of the Rainbows. However, I am now intrigued by the Southern Polish Made in the USA flip flops. Might have to get a pair.
