Two years ago, Laowa gave me a few great lenses, one of which, the 6mm f2 is still my favourite Micro Four Thirds lens on my OM-5. However, Laowa has since focused more on full frame and gave us the equivalent of 10mm f2.8. It's a great lens but I was just shocked to see how good their latest 55mm f2.8 Tilt-Shift is, and I mean, really really good. I can easily crown it, THE BEST IN 2024! Peace. #photography #laowa #tiltshift

Laowa's 55mm f2.8 TS is a specialist lens. If you are bored of ordinary designs, a pro-grade tilt-shift lens like this may be for you. It's capable but really, optically a beast!

Great video Jimmy! I have used the Canon EF TS-E lenses in the past for a number of projects and can really appreciate what it allows us to do without taking out the old 4x5! It looks impressive for sure so I will have to check it out when the production version is available! What most people don't realize is that a true Tilt / Shift lens has to be larger to accommodate for the larger circle of confusion when the lens is at its maximum adjustments (and therefore not using the very edges for the lens and getting vignetting). I do hope that they set up the production version with the proper machining for the Arca Swiss on the mount foot, although these days I most likely have a dozen plates floating around. It just doesn't make sense to have to add something else to a premium lens such as this, especially when it is being a fresh design. Cheers!

Thanks Stan. Many don't quite understand TS lenses still. I know we can do something digitally in post for both stills and videos if you want to create 'toy-like' miniature images, but the true power of TS lenses are that you can make a shot when subject is off the focal plane without focus bracketing. Great commercial asset indeed.

Thanks! It's a great lens, optically I haven't seen better for a TS lens. It an almost rival a top end prime 50mm!

Nice video. However, with the blurring prowess of software today, do we even need tilt shift lenses anymore?

Haha, you will see in my next TS video. Tilt shift lenses are more than just blurring prowess or to create miniature look in images. Changing the focal plane means that you can create photos when the photo is off the focal plane without focus bracketing!

Nice thing about t/s lenses is that they are repeatable and don't require time on the back end creating a similar effect across many many photos. And if you're correcting for perspective, you don't lose pixels. If you're doing a pano stitch, the camera moves, not the lens; makes the images align better and there is little to no distortion.

A TS lens is essential for their original purpose: perspective control and manipulation for precise choice of plane of focus.

So what is the width, in mm, of the tripod mount plate?

I don't get it. These corrections can be made digitally. What am I missing?

Time and potential quality. You can d a lot these days in digital but they all take time. I am no saying corrections but other aspects where TS lenses can do. One of them I haven demonstrated is close up products, TS can do it in one shot and others will need to focus stack multiple images to achieve the same thing

It is so heavy, big and expensive that I consider it not very versatile. I prefer my TTArtisan 50/f1.4 T&S for MFT.

It is, yet, TS lenses are specialist lens. I also have the TTArtisan 50/1.4 TS on my M43 camera. It's nowhere near the same optical performance. It's fun but if one wants to produce commercial works, this is by far one of the best TS lenses on the market to date. Don't forget that it can also focus close and get 1x magnification!
