As someone who often shoots with a Fujichron (the community nickname for the f/2.0 WR series on X-Mount), congrats. Small, sharp WR primes are a treat when you have a body to match, and OM tends to have great WR at a much lower price point than a lot of the competitors.

Great little video of the little primes. Thanks. I used to own them when I got the E-M5 back in 2012, then gradually moved away to all pro in the E-M1 line of bodies and used pro glass, including the f/1.2 and mostly lenses with clutch and fn buttons. Then expanded to other systems for particular work where I needed high MP FF for things like orchestra and band and ensemble work. When I realized that nobody has a consistently designed pro lens layout across all their system, it started to not matter so much and I just get the images with whatever good camera and lens can do the job and don't care about the clutch, aperture ring, fn buttons, etc., more than I do about certain conveniences I have in this vehicle but not in that. My off road TRD doesn't have the features my wife's XR-5 has, but then, so what? I guess I'm happy with the weather sealing because that's really the reason I sold them originally, and own not a single lens that is not weather sealed except the 75mm f/1.8.

I'm not a micro 4/3 user, but i really like the system and how compact lenses are, especially this little primes. That said, one of the most attractive lens for me (if not the most attractive one) is the Pana-Leica 10-25 F/1.7, it's stunning, but a bit "big and heavy" for the system, so i hope OM System will produce a similar zoom, like Olympus did in their dslr era with the 14-35 F/2, that with a micro 4/3 optic scheme would be a lot smaller and lighter, and a joy to use for reportage photography due to its fast aperture and all the most used focal lenghts. Speaking about reportage or street photography, to me, one of the two most discussed "cons" of the 4/3 system, namely, "the lack of bokeh", is one of the biggest advantage over fullframe in my opinion, because, IF you like to realize photos where the background, or i should say, the place where you are taking the photo, is an important subject just like the hypotetical person you're thying to photograph, having the ability to shoot at F/4 with the same dof to F/8 on fullframe, gives you a lot of room to play with shutter speed or lower iso, same for landscapes. But that's a personal preference, ofcourse, anyone can disagree 🙃

Good update to these lenses, but without the focus clutch and zone focus scale I am sad to say I am not interested. I use my 17mm f/1.8 and 12mm f/2.0 whenever I am out with my PEN-F shooting street and predominately zone focus in manual from the hip. This will not be possible with the mark ii version of the 17mm, and is why I was never especially interested in the 25mm f/1.8 (and why oh why isn't there a focus clutch on the 20mm f/1.4 PRO?!). Inevitably they will do the same to the 12mm f/2.0 in time. Glad to hear that a recilinear fast ultra-wide is also on your wish list - I think there is a noticable gap here!

The manual clutch is something I use a lot in travel photography, especially with very low light work. I tend to set the focus, set it down and snap the photo. I can only do that with my 12/2 and 17/1.8 today. That and street... but I will admit I an a niche use case user. Sad though... they almost had my money. Maybe they want more of it and keep waiving their pro lenses around lol.

How would you position the 20mm f/1.4 between the new lenses?
@hnahler
@hnahler 5 күн бұрын
I was wondering that, too. It looks like a lack of strategy. Why did they not just update the 17 and 25, not doing the 20 at all? - There was clearly an Olympus roadmap with the 20 and it was already developed at the takeover, so OM launched it to have something to show. I suspect, Olympus had a roadmap for e.g. a 15mm 1.4 and 35/40mm 1.4 to have a line between the 1.2 PRO and 1.8 line but at different focal lengths. However, OM doesn't want to invest into completely new development. So, now the 20 mm looks like the odd one out. I have it and love it for hiking.

This is what kept me away from MFT for a long time. Small well weather sealed bodies, but non sealed small primes that I wanted the system for…. Finally sealed small primes!!! I ordered an OM-3 and both small primes this morning. Just waiting for a black version and I’ll order a second body. Actually selling off a lot of unused Fuji gear and feel oddly excited to do so after shooting strictly Fuji for the past 7 or so years. Can’t wait for the 12 and 45 to be updated as well. I wonder what they will do with the 75? Also a heads up to those who haven’t ordered yet that I found out late. OMDS is doing a launch sale that discounts one of the small primes $200 off if purchased with the camera. Had I known I would have ordered one lens and the silver body today and the other lens with the black body when that is launched. Buying only one body and two lenses only discounts one lens. Also watch your B&H carts. They slipped in a 3 year warranty for $90 that I didn’t ask for that I had to remove.

I assume it's just going to be Mk II versions of the lenses for now, but I hope their extended lens roadmap includes a 20mm in the f1.8 line-up. Especially with the new OM-3 being ideal for street/urban use and the 40mm equivalent gaining so much popularity among street photographers lately. The Lumix f1.7 is the _only_ 20mm compact option with AF, and it's really not a great lens -- it's slow to focus and the rendering could be better. It's time for a competitor to that lens.

@peterherth7379 A/ The Oly f1.4 isn't compact, which is what I specified. B/ If you think suggesting an $800 lens to someone asking for competition to a $300 lens is appropriate, you're in a much higher tax bracket than me.

@@davidg5898 Yes, it is larger than the 20/1.7. I own both of them. And it is a great lens. I cannot know what your size limits exactly are. I still think it is worth considering, if you look for a great 20mm. And for the cost, you didn't mention that cost was a constraint. Of course the 20/1.4 is more expensive. And then this is either an issue for you or not. That I cannot know.
@davidg5898
@davidg5898 3 күн бұрын
@ I realize this is the internet where no one ever admits a mistake, but let's not be disingenuous. 1/ True that "compact" isn't strictly defined, but we all know it when we see it. You know it, too. That's why you called OM's 20mm f1.4 "not exactly humongous" instead. 2/ My context suggested Oly/OM's f1.8 line could include a competitor to the Lumix 20mm f1.7. No one considers Oly/Pana's _PRO_ class lenses to be competitors of their f1.8 & f1.7 lines. 3/ No, I didn't mention cost. But it could easily be inferred by only talking about f1.8 and f1.7 lenses. 4/ I also never said "prime lens" or "fast lens" yet you didn't suggest any of the pancake or compact MFT zooms that cover 20mm. So you obviously understood the things I left unsaid, despite feigning innocence now. Someone else did the same ridiculous thing to my comment in another video. I said that now I have to seriously weigh the 100-400mm II + 1.4x TC against the 150-600mm for a future purchase. They suggested the Oly big white instead. A completely different class of lens in a completely different budget, and obviously completely outside the context of my comment.

@@davidg5898 You asked for a 20/1.8. I mentioned the 20/1.4 existing. My answer clearly pointed out that it is larger. But for me it is obviously acceptably larger, that is why I gave the answer, as I couldn't know whether you had considered one. If it is still too large and too expensive to you, that is fine. It would have sufficed to answer: I really was specifically asking for a 1.8, as I want something smaller and priced along the other 1.8s. Instead even your first answer was very aggressive. And now you keep flaming me just because I tried to give a helpful answer to your initial post. If you want an apology for that, here you have it. @artistjoh
@artistjoh 5 күн бұрын
Removing the manual focus clutch from the 17 is NOT an improvement. It is the reason I bought the Oly 17, and because the 25 didn't have the clutch, and the Pro 25 is too big and heavy, I chose the Lumix version instead. Only amateurs think using metal is a good thing. Metal does nothing for optical qualities, that is all down to the glass. Plastic reduces weight. I prefer shaving grams off the lens. If the 17 loses the manual clutch I recommend buying the Lumix 20 instead. It is even smaller. At 25mm the Leica f1.4 renders better for photography, and the Lumix f1.7 is a superb video lens choice. Smaller lenses with manual focus clutch would make the Olympus lenses attractive. No manual focus clutch = no sale.

Everything OM Systems does is just repacking existing tech. Looks like it's time for a Nikon Zf, which amazing costs less. For micro 4/3 I'll stick with my Em5 III

Kinda wired to have the 20mm 1.4 and now the ver 2 17 and 25…

"Splash Proof" - well, better than nothing. What about the 45 mm lens? The 12mm? And no more MF focus clutch? Hmm … And I just looked up the pricing … well … was to be expected, modern times …

Jimmy, you know that is bull.. that manual clutch focus is not for photography? Have you forgotten all zone focus you do with your own Leica manual lenses?

Without improved iq I would rather go with the 20/ f1.4. than the new 17mm. And no, the 25mm is not a budget lens. Look at other FF manufacturers that produce nifty fifties for half the price.

Typical - I've just bought into M43 (secondhand) with E-M1 marki and a markiii plus 17/25/45 f1.8's and now these come out! That 25 is making my bank account quiver.. Guess the Nikon is going. Thanks (for a great review) Jimmy!

Great move by OMS, I just don‘t know where to get all the money from? I was waiting for weathersealed versions and now they‘re even fully metall. Also, the OM-3 is finally a successor for my EM5 II.

I'm severely disappointed in the OM-3 and the lens releases. They're just not a good value for the money, especially the OM-3. For that price, it has an EVF worse than my existing 2019 Canon. These lenses do not appear to be new optics - just re-housed.

This looks like another quick cash grab. A 1.4 would have been worth talking about, but this not so much.

Strongly disagree on the original 17mm being good 😏 I'm definitely getting the new version!

OM system does seem to have clear plan and target market thank goodness , Olympus tried to be all things to all people which did not work despite some great products.

How does the 17mm f/1.8 mark ii compare in size to the Panny 20mm f1/.7 ??

The 25 is not pancake, but very versatile and fast af. The pana 20mm autofocus is unusable in low light. Trash lens.
