Thank you so much for this, I’ve always used coconut fiber but I just don’t think it’s the best for reptiles. It works great for my tarantulas and my hissing roaches, but that’s about it. I use topsoil for my green anole and my millipede and have previously used it for my quails (though I had to stop because the smell was too much because my quails shit way too much) and I’ve also never sanitized topsoil. I’ve always used Scott’s topsoil and I get the one with no fertilizer and manure so I’ve always just assumed it’s safe enough. I definitely can’t bake it in my apt since I have a roommate. I’m definitely planning to make this mixture for my leopard gecko soon!

i just picked up two beautiful leopards, they are used to go on sand, but the previous owner did ALOT of effort into making sure it isnt the ultra fine sand that would get in their lungs or make them eat too much of it. had them for 3 days as im writing this, and in a few days more im gonna make their house sweet and clean again. i plan to use a mix like this but keep it more sandy in their toilet section cant wait to see them actually beginning to dig more around now that its not JUST gonna be sand, ive noticed one of them likes to dig a little hole and then curl up in it next to their toilet corner - so i cant wait too see how creative they get once they get the opportunity to REALLY make some burrows and small tunnels to chill and sleep in

If so, how often would I mix it? Also considering if i bought a clean up crew. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the video, it was very informative! Question for you - Do you recommend switching to the soil and sand into in their young adult lives? My Leo is 4 and he's never been on anything other than reptile carpet. I don't know if it's too late to switch. Would it shock him? Could it cause health issues since he's not used to it? He hasn't had any major health issues. So I don't want to rock the boat if that make sense. Anywho, thanks again!
@OliviaMC3 ай бұрын
Hey I know its a little late, but it's never too late to switch, I'd highly recomend switching your leo to a safe substrate mix such as shown in the video, my rescue leopard gecko was on carpet for years and I switched him to a mix of reptisoil and reptisand and he was very happy, loving to dig and play in it, I would recomend keeping an eye out for any signs of dicomfort, as well as when handling your gecko gently feeling its stomach to ensure it isn't hard feeling as thats a sighn of impaction. My bearded dragon i also have on the same mix and he will eat small amounts however, I've had them both on it for years and had no issues. Hope this helps!

Another great video. Question: I noticed that you don't add peat to this mixture, but do on your Bearded Dragon mix. Being that they are both Arid species, I wonder why the difference? Just didn't have peat on hand this time?
@ChiefSweetsUniverse10 ай бұрын
Exactly that reason haha. My Home Depot was completely sold out and I was like well this will work. My favorite mix and I’ll make a video about it soon is peat moss, top soil that’s really clay based if I can’t get that I use 20 pounds of excavator clay, play sand, exo terra stone desert 20lbs.
@jeffreymagni12728 ай бұрын
@@ChiefSweetsUniverse Right on.. My local landscape supply has what they call a "sandy loam" that is very clay based I was experimenting with myself, but ended up sticking with the Timberline TS and then just adding sand and exo terra stone dessert. I do like the latter as you can mix it anyway you want to get the consitency you are looking for, but it does cost a bit more that way probably.
@beckywilsontx20 сағат бұрын

@ChiefSweetsUniverse20 сағат бұрын
No i definitely do but it’s becoming much harder to find so I don’t recommend it as much since most stores stopped selling it. It’s because its bad for the environment to mine all the peat moss so they stopped mining it

With adding bioactive materials with isopods and spring tails, do you ever have to switch the substrate? And I was told to use a drainage layer at the bottom, but noticed you didnt mention that.
@dantemarquez35807 ай бұрын
Since leopard geckos need relatively low humidity, a drainage layer is not necessary. As for changing out the substrate, that’s not necessary either since the plants and isopods will naturally take care of any waste. Although be sure to spot clean urate (white waste), as isopods will not eat it.

I don't have a whole lot of funds everything so expensive these days. But I have been feeding him about twice a week and dusting his meal worms with calcium d3. But I was told to do the top soil and play sand and then I need calcium with and without d3 to dust his insects and multi vitamins if I can't do the uvb. I just dint know if my mental health is going to tank super hard again and I let him go to crap again.
