Because we can. This is one added bonus that makes Mass Effect even greater, that you can create your own Shepard. The standard Shepard is taken from the male model "Mark Vanderloo" and I for one don't want to play a male model.

I have to say from playing all the mass effect games, I don't know where you get the idea that Ashley is a racist. When Wrex and Garus join the team, she asks Shepard that they shouldnt have access to keys system cos she is just following protocol. And she as no experience wiith aliens so you can understand her mistrust at first but that changes through the game. In ME3, she says that Tali is like a sister to her. Ashley is far from racist in my opinion and the abuse she gets is ridiculous.
