Was 18 just legal to drive and my dad gave me the car to get a bunch of us to a gig in the National Stadium on SCR Dublin. 50 years ago and I remember as a crazy brilliant night. Rory was a special one.

"Best Live Performance"....I've seen a lot of Rory's performances here on YT, and saw him once live. I will never forget it. Whether this was "the best" is irrelevant...it's typical of what Rory brought to the stage each and every gig he played. Watching him in this vid makes you realize with startling clarity how Rory was not just a great guitarist, but the guitar actually became part of him as he belted out his raw, gutsy vocals and put on a show not to be rivaled by anyone else, ever! He works not only the strings with blistering fury, but also the volume and tone pot along with the pickup switch seemingly on autopilot as he coaxes screams, howls, muting, finger taps and pinch harmonics with relative impunity. The Strat is a slave to his will. He will never be duplicated and never rivaled.

@@patmcintire9875 What about effects? "I use them off and on! I go through phases when I just use the Hawk Booster. At the moment I’m using some Boss units - a vibrato, flanger, octave divider and occasionally a distortion pack. I also have a little DOD analogue delay between the two amps. " - Rory Gallagher interview with Bob Hewitt, Guitarist Magazine, February 1985. “I’ve got a Dyna-comp, which is on all the time, to drive the songs from the leads. It’s not for effect. It’s a form of compression and I have it at a setting where the compression’s really low on it. I usually use a Tube Screamer, which broke down on me. Last night I was using a Boss overdrive. I use them for some solos, not all solos…I have a brown Boss octave thing.” - Rory Gallagher, August 1991, (official website)

I saw Rory back in 73 I think. He opend for Deep Purple during the Machine Head tour. He absolutely brought the house down. As a matter of fact after Deep Purple finished their encores the entire audience were screaming for Rory to come back on. Sure enough he did and prceeded to blow his opengl performance away!!! One the absolutely purest blues/rock guitarists that ever picked up a guitar!!

He truly was something else. Just absolutely, totally awesome. Played a lot of what may sound like your typical blues based rock of the time, but he always added something of his own. I notice it now more since I began playing guitar myself. Though in comparison to Rory, I'm not really playing guitar. I'm playing with the guitar. Gotta start somewhere though.

@@crazzybiscuitzz7807 and if you listen to his live recordings here on KZbin you'll quickly realise that he seldomly plays a song the same way twice. It's all in the moment. I was born in the late 50s and grew up surrounded by music. My parents listened to what they liked and my mother was a trained pianist. I started playing a real guitar at 10 but switched to bass at 16 or 17 & still play. I remember hearing his name throughout the 70s but never knew anything about him or his music. At 64 i am just now hearing all this. Kinda lame of me wouldn't you agree ? He was definitely THE one unsung hero. I'm just now learning how important he was and still is to many. I definitely have a new favorite guitar player. Oh well. Better late than never. . It was the 70s though and drugs were abundant and there were so many genre's of music. Started playing in a band at 17 and a neighbor of mine my age was heavily into Hendrix. He could play much of his music note for note. He's still in the biz along with very talented brother's and I do not remember him ever mentioning Rory. Strange !

I probably hold the record for seeing Rory in concert more times than just about anyone else - maybe 300 shows or probably even more. I also got to know him and he was very, very special. My only regret is that my own kids who were only small at the time never got to see him because they were just too young. I often tell my kids they don't know what they missed - he was really something. When you saw Rory on stage, you just knew that you were in the presence of greatness and frankly, it's very difficult to describe the experience to anyone who never got to see him. He was mesmerising.

I saw Rory Gallagher for the first time at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney 1980, watched his pre show sound check with an audience of 3, ( including the theme from Rawhide ), during the show some guy jumped on stage in the middle of Shadow Play and Rory blocked security from getting hold of him , ( while playing ), he let the guy sing the song and gave him a hug, after that show I bought tickets for the second performance the following week. They remain the two best shows I ever saw.

Taco Bell Rory will never get inducted into the U.S hall of fame because he is generally not well known in the States, therefore not "famous." He could have played lead in the Stones and various other top bands but chose freedom instead. He was true to himself and only answerable to himself. Rory doesn't need any so called hall of fame ,He is and always will be to all that heard him something that something special that erupts within their lives and provides a sound that is so joyous, so full of life that enraptures their soul. Over 50 years after first seeing him at a concert with Taste I am still so enraptured. Surely that is the mark of a master. I loved you then and even though the years grow long since you left us I love you still. For me you will always be the man.

I just added this to my playlist to be played at my wake. When I finally "spit the bit", I want all of my friends to rock out! This cut embodies all of that spirit. If I could show someone just one cut of Rory's music, I'd play this.

I bought 'Tattoo' in 1974, as a tape, and although I can't remember why, I played it til it fell apart. I'm 71 years young now, and still listening to RG, 10 Years After, John Mayall and so many other great musicians. What a time that was!

So in '78 when I could barely afford a gig every fortnight at the Apollo, instead of seeing Television, The Only Ones or Alex Harvey, I went to see Rory. Absolutely no regrets.

Derek Wilson lucky you I came across Phil Lynott and some of his band drinking by themselves in a Dublin pub in the early 70s and was reluctant to go up to him and ask for himself autograph I am kicking myself to this day

Greatest musician ever, in my opinion. He really loved what he was doing and it shows in the end result of all his albums and live performances. Rory was a one off who i loved listening to since i was 15 and now i am 59 and still appreciate this great guy - i love this man - genius is a light word-thank god we had musicians like him.

This is what made this guy outstanding, his songs are never played the same way twice. There are always little different things thrown in to keep it fresh, the sign of a true musical genius.

How Brown Rory didn't have a whammy bar on his Strat....didn't resort to tapping....avoided wah-wah pedals...long boring solos....always was and will be to me the embodiment of a guitarist. Great tone to his playing....

+Randico Enrico Gonzalez Jr. Rory WAS and NEVER will b underrated. He's in top 3 ever. How's that underrated. U guys getting mistaken with the fact Rory fought the establishment and never released singles. My go look at him. There is no guitarist worth his salt that doesn't no how good this man was
@Randico19628 жыл бұрын
Rory was one of the Best Guitar player of all time in my opinion. What I meant when I said he was underrated is I'm from Canada and I like to think I know a lot about rock, and I never even heard of him until I was 50yrs old and I only know one other person that knew who he was. How can someone be that awesome and fly under the North American rock radar? On his skill alone he deserves to be known world wide. I know that the main reasons were fear of flying and his not wanting to become a hit single artist
