This man was a raw as a nerve - how criminally overlooked he was/is! Pure rock-n-roll, no polish, no posing, no bullshit. His blues was just as real, just as authentic. Has the chops of a virtuoso player, but has a punk rock spirit. Rory deserves to be better known.

He was approached by the Stones as Brian Jones' replacement, but declined. I'm mostly glad he did, but if he had accepted more people might know him now. Then again it didn't do much for Harvey Mandel, another underrated guitarist who played with them briefly.

I saw Rory back in 73 I think. He opend for Deep Purple during the Machine Head tour. He absolutely brought the house down. As a matter of fact after Deep Purple finished their encores the entire audience were screaming for Rory to come back on. Sure enough he did and prceeded to blow his opengl performance away!!! One the absolutely purest blues/rock guitarists that ever picked up a guitar!!

yes saw him on the same tour- in 1973 i did not know who he was.., Rory and his band were on fire and blew the roof off the place. he left the audience in a frenzy after doing an encore the crowd was standing on their chairs demanding more chanting his name over and over.. as good as Purple were back them he made it difficult for them that night. the next day i went out and bought everything he made and became a fan for decades

He truly was something else. Just absolutely, totally awesome. Played a lot of what may sound like your typical blues based rock of the time, but he always added something of his own. I notice it now more since I began playing guitar myself. Though in comparison to Rory, I'm not really playing guitar. I'm playing with the guitar. Gotta start somewhere though.
@myoldmate2 жыл бұрын
@@crazzybiscuitzz7807 and if you listen to his live recordings here on KZbin you'll quickly realise that he seldomly plays a song the same way twice. It's all in the moment. He had the skill to play just as he wished at that time. A superb guitarist, musician and most importantly a live performer pretty much unequalled.

Saw Rory at the L.A. Colliseum with Jethro Tull, and Robin Trower!! Rory Owned the day. Some of my Friends that came with me, had Never even heard of him. I knew of Rory, for a couple of years by then. I had his '72 European tour Album i had bought in 1974. Became a Huge Fan! He blew away Trower and Tull that day, playing on top.of his Amps, and running around on Stage. Very tight band. He had 100,000 people on their feet that day!! I probably hold the record for seeing Rory in concert more times than just about anyone else - maybe 300 shows or probably even more. I also got to know him and he was very, very special. My only regret is that my own kids who were only small at the time never got to see him because they were just too young. I often tell my kids they don't know what they missed - he was really something. When you saw Rory on stage, you just knew that you were in the presence of greatness and frankly, it's very difficult to describe the experience to anyone who never got to see him. He was mesmerising.

I saw Rory Gallagher for the first time at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney 1980, watched his pre show sound check with an audience of 3, ( including the theme from Rawhide ), during the show some guy jumped on stage in the middle of Shadow Play and Rory blocked security from getting hold of him , ( while playing ), he let the guy sing the song and gave him a hug, after that show I bought tickets for the second performance the following week. They remain the two best shows I ever saw.

I was born in the late 50s and grew up surrounded by music. My parents listened to what they liked and my mother was a trained pianist. I started playing a real guitar at 10 but switched to bass at 16 or 17 & still play. I remember hearing his name throughout the 70s but never knew anything about him or his music. At 64 i am just now hearing all this. Kinda lame of me wouldn't you agree ? He was definitely THE one unsung hero. I'm just now learning how important he was and still is to many. I definitely have a new favorite guitar player. Oh well. Better late than never. . It was the 70s though and drugs were abundant and there were so many genre's of music. Started playing in a band at 17 and a neighbor of mine my age was heavily into Hendrix. He could play much of his music note for note. He's still in the biz along with very talented brother's and I do not remember him ever mentioning Rory. Strange !

@@jodeeb.6496 I'm 65. This video brings back a bit of those times. I go back there now more often. Why? Not because I'm some old fart trying to recall my youth, but because it seems that that era (of which I lived), had more sensible people with better common sense. Then: CSN, Doobie Brothers, ABBA. Now: Some female trendy singer swinging on poles showing 90% of their asses and this is considered ok!? And it's broadcast on national TV here in the US. Also played that night were Queensryche and Twisted Sister. 9 years earlier I seen David Bowie but was seated close to the right tower of speakers. My ears rang for many days. Taco Bell Rory will never get inducted into the U.S hall of fame because he is generally not well known in the States, therefore not "famous." He could have played lead in the Stones and various other top bands but chose freedom instead. He was true to himself and only answerable to himself. The end result is pure raw talent at its best, something we would not have experienced if he simply decided to blend into the background in some generic albeit "famous" band. Rory is forever inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Talent !!!

"Best Live Performance"....I've seen a lot of Rory's performances here on YT, and saw him once live. I will never forget it. Whether this was "the best" is irrelevant...it's typical of what Rory brought to the stage each and every gig he played. Watching him in this vid makes you realize with startling clarity how Rory was not just a great guitarist, but the guitar actually became part of him as he belted out his raw, gutsy vocals and put on a show not to be rivaled by anyone else, ever! He works not only the strings with blistering fury, but also the volume and tone pot along with the pickup switch seemingly on autopilot as he coaxes screams, howls, muting, finger taps and pinch harmonics with relative impunity. The Strat is a slave to his will. He will never be duplicated and never rivaled.

I’ve played guitar for 40 years, heard of him and how great he was in the 80’s but only took the time this past summer to watch and listen. My loss. Good Lord does he bring it!

So in '78 when I could barely afford a gig every fortnight at the Apollo, instead of seeing Television, The Only Ones or Alex Harvey, I went to see Rory. Absolutely no regrets.

Derek Wilson Interesting in that ex-SAHB drummer Ted McKenna joined up with Rory and is on hand here. Great times.

Derek Wilson lucky you I came across Phil Lynott and some of his band drinking by themselves in a Dublin pub in the early 70s and was reluctant to go up to him and ask for himself autograph I am kicking myself to this day

Shin Kicker is perfect to open up a gig. He did this many times. So everybody knew what to exspect for the next 3 hours. 150 percent pedal to the metal. We`ll never forget you for this, Rory.

Revisiting Rory after many years and being blown away all over again. F**k me how good was he! I'd forgotten. Thanks KZbin, a greater thanks to whomever uploaded this, bless all your hearts, this sort of shit should never be forgotten . Love his beat up Strat, that's a working man's tool.

They dont make entertainers like this anymore. A true Journeyman, humble, loved his craft , wouldnt compromise anything and he close to his audience. Always had the time to talk to the fans...Brian May (Queen) has a great story about Rory Gallagher. He could have been a star and chose not to. RIP Mr.Gallagher

RORY would have been a great fit for the ROLLING STONES!! Great blues guitarist, wood could never compare with RORY ! I wish I could turn back time!!!!
@timothyfalk523110 күн бұрын
no, it would have been a terrible fit, he would have outshone all of them, and they wouldn't have liked that.

i saw Rory in 1973 i did not know who he was.. he opened up for Deep Purple at the time when they were peaking , Rory and his band were on fire and blew the roof off the place. he left the audience in a frenzy after doing an encore the crowd was standing on their chairs demanding more chanting his name over and over.. as good as Purple were back them he made it difficult for them that night. the next day i went out and bought everything he made and became a fan for decades
