My friends and I were excited to see Deep Purple play at the old San Bernardino Swing Auditorium in 1973. The opening act was some new dude with a band named after him. Rory Gallagher from Ireland. Wow 🤩 We we’re blown away. We called for 3 encores and he inadvertently stole the show from DP and needless to say, my buddies and I became avid Rory fans. We had purchased quite a few of his albums. What an incredible talent he was.

Similar story. I was in (then) West Germany in ‘71 and a couple mates and I went out for some live music and beers in a small suburb of Stuttgart, at a little movie theater with a stage. I’d never heard of Rory. It was a intimate space with no more than 300 seats. Bought tickets at the door. These three guys came out and took the roof off. We were in shock. Amazingly, this video doesn’t truly convey the energy. Never before or since have I seen the likes to equal that musical experience.

Went to U of M back in '72. Saw a poster on campus that this dude was playing that night. Never heard of him. My friends and I got there early and planted ourselves front row center, literally a couple of feet away from him on stage. The energy and sheer force, take no prisoners, blow your brains out show he and the band performed that night exceeded anything I ever experience before and I'm old and saw a lot of the greats of that era...mind blowing stuff.

I was just watching a video of a great live performance of "Like a Hurricane" by Neil Young and it suddenly occurred to me that he and Rory have a good bit in common (besides a liking for flannel shirts), but I think Rory's the better guitarist, better singer, waaaaay better dancer, and pretty close as a songwriter. So I had to come watch this again, my favorite performance by Rory. A good bit of the credit goes to Rod de'Ath, too, the little duet they do towards the end is just magical.

This was a man who could make a guitar do anything he wanted it to. You realize that he's getting that wah-wah effect not from a pedal, but from his volume control on the guitar, right? I had the good fortune to see Rory perform in a tiny club in Philadelphia around 1979. Just a few years ago I also had the good fortune to visit his home city of Cork, and went into the public library, where a small but terrific music library has been set up in his honor. There was a sense of reverence about the place as people came in to borrow records, CDs, and DVDs about music. By the way, a very good documentary called Ghost Blues is a must-watch for any Rory Gallagher fans who haven't seen it. I never amounted to anything as a guitarist, but Rory Gallagher has been an inspiration to me for over 40 years. If I had to summarize why, I'd say it was his dedication to doing what was important to him as an artist and performer, rather than trying to cash in by riding along with pop trends.

@@danielpalmer5835 you mean 'swells' or 'violining' but yes, was going to make same point, basically people like him and gary moore, they were at both controls constantly, i play too and use them loads throughout a blues gig, its complex, like everything ffs lol, but... volume, also alters tone / cleaness of sound and level of distortion, tone makes more bass or treble, blues uses the changes in volume and thus tone a lot i guess, the actual, tone control, i touch twice, to make it bassier on two songs.. i could do the wah thing with it, i use vilioling a bit recently, with feed back and bends too.

Being Irish, you can see and feel the angst that particularly his live shows brought out in his audience. The 70's was a very rough time for the Irish people, with the whole religious and IRA stuff going on, blood in their streets. Rory got on stage and the people just rocked out and loved the energy. He bonded with his audience to a degree that still captures our attention to this day. He'd do shows where he literally walked out into the crowd still playing, with sweaty people hanging onto him and just played his guts out. Rory was a phenom and i don't know any other guitarist who has ever been able to create that unique formula of music, performance and raw emotion that he did.

The Belfast shows - as I understand it - were a big, big deal. Nobody - no big names anyway - would go there to play except Rory. Even for this tour they could not bring in the full recording rig because they could not get it insured, so the recording quality is not at the level of the other shows. With the box set release you can finally hear the whole show

Rory Gallagher is legend. I don't understand why he hasn't found more adulation posthumously. His playing is sublime. he's up there with SRV & Hendrix. But he was a simple guy who preferred to play to a few hundred loyal fans rather than fill arenas or bow down to piggy promoters & agents.

He'd play bigger shows of maybe a couple thousand, maybe 3? But he never joined the arena rock craze of the mid and late 70s where shows started playing to like 5-7 thousand people.

He also went against the industry, he refused to put out singles like all the other artists at the time. He wanted to give his fans moneys worth albums. He also refused the glitz and glam. Fireworks and light shows. He just wanted a stage, his equipment, and a crowd. That's all he needed to play. The fancyness of their shows were them being an awesome unit. The industry doesn't push/promote artist like this. This man is still not in the rock and roll hall of fame. But snoop dogg is. That tells you everything you need to know

@@MMM-28-28He did everything he could to thwart the record companies from changing him to a generic 45 singles artist. He pissed the record companies off many, many times. I think he regretted it a bit later in life when his health was failing but that was Rory. He sold 30 million albums on his own terms despite the pressures to conform.
