That Metabo 36 volt is a beast, it keeps up with the Milwaukee Fuel and the Dewalt 996, Its the only one that dont start to smell after 30 Timberlok lags. I will buy the Flex soon though, just because.

@@danabenjamin3300 I'm not sure if this is typical or not, but I had a warranty repair done on my triple hammer impact (the membrane cover on the mode button tore - my fault). I never registered the tool, they didn't ask for proof of purchase. They just sent a shipping label and I had the tool back in under a week, it was excellent. Cost me $0.

I'd love that Flex or even 40v Makita but, the value that Kobalt offers is incredible especially when you get the hammer drill in a 3 tool combo on sale for $249 with a free tool lol. I don’t know the specs on all of them but we know that Flex, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Makita are all in a different category than the others. The HP Ryobi stuff is right there with Kobalt and Rigid. They’re better than Bauer, Porter Cable, and Hart. Porter Cable used to be good but they are on their way out with Craftsman replacing it.

The Kobalt is a pretty strong drill, but sadly their overload protection seems a bit too aggressive and really limits what it can do. It always seems like it should have plenty more to give when it cuts off.

The correct way of holding a side handle with left hand is with palm off body. In the universal way, palm must point in clockwise direction while looking from the back of a drill. The reason is when drill bit jams, the tool will twist counterclockwise thereby pushing side handle into palm instead of fingers. This is for is safety (palm can withstand higher load) and convenience.

Nice, and after next round there should be a grand final with the top 2 or 3, really torture test them till they start smoking and/or breaking. So far it really seems like the Flex cannot be beaten in raw power but the Makita advantages are much more than just power so we still need your subjective opinion on which is better to use = most productive.

I know im late to the party seeing this but you know that all the chucks used in this video are lockable and this would help your tests in future, Once tightened as much as you can turn the chuck back slightly until you feel a click, this will stop the jaws of the chucks from coming loose as it puts a block at the back of the jaws.

Great vids man. I like that you use the osb to keep it consistent so theres no hard spots. That being said, the stump is full of inconsistencies and i felt that with the impact video as well. Not the best idea to use a stump. Jus cause it looks like its all clean spots on the cut surface, cant tell whats happening and where inside. I imagine your using it because its hard, to find something to get that much depth from, and the price of lumber these days its expensive to even make it. Just cant tell what tools are getting harder or softer spots than they others, even a little bit difference in hard or softness can make a sizable proformance difference. Great vids tho. I love your showdowns. Surprising results sometimes. Keep it up bud

Yeah, the stump is definitely not the most scientific. I might do the 3/8" lags in something else after I get through the remaining drills. I think I'll keep it for the 10" lags, though. And I do so many different tests so that it reduces the impact of any single test on the overall scores. Plus, I have concrete and metal coming up! Thanks for watching, Jack!

The metabo has an anti whrist breaking feature where if it reaches a certain resistance it'll stop so you don't hurt yourself.

They all do -- however, the LED light doesn't blink when that kicks in. The light only blinks when the overload protection kicks in. If you have one, try twisting the drill violently mid-air and watch the anti-kickback kick in, no blinking.

Appreciate the honest reviews. How do you feel about the Flex vs the XGT, points aside? Was the Makita XGT noticeably smoother, more powerful? Seems like the key to the Flex Turbo drill is 21700 batteries, which I think are only in the 8 & 12 Ah batteries. Hope they release in the future some 3 & 6 Ah with those cells. I'd love to see the Flex Angle Grinder and Oscillating multi-tool vs the XGT equivalents, or even the Bosch Profactor thrown in.

I should've discussed the ergonomics a bit more in this round, but the Flex is pretty smooth to use. I gave the 40V back to the Makita rep but I want to say they were pretty darn close for ergonomics except the Flex is heavier, especially with the 8ah battery.

A. Your intros are FANTASTIC! B. The only drills beating the M18 Milwaukee are 24V+ ?? That says a lot about the Milwaukee. C. I'm actually surprised the XTR did so poorly. My M18 Fuel hammer drill that is Gen 1 (I think? It's 5yrs old) with the original xc4.0 batteries is able to put a 3" hole saw through a 2x4 in high speed. The XTR couldn't manage a 2" ? Wow. D. Hi, this drill has "RFC" - reactive force control. It doesn't seem to function the same way as the anti kickback in the Bosch, Milwaukee fuel gen 4, and others, though. I haven't tried the new 2024 Metabo HPT 36V hammer drill though, I think it has improved anti-kickback.

Agree, especially for DIYers or light/medium duty contractors. If you're doing heavy duty tasks all day, the Flex, Makita 40V and Milwaukee seem like the best choices. The caveat being, the Flex needs to be out for a while to know how durable it is.

Hey man, could you do a vs test with the Skil Pwrcore brushless angle grinder and the Hercules brushless angle grinder? I haven't seen a video comparing them and they are almost identical in price with a 5ah battery and charger.

Actually I did the Flex a second time on the stump to make sure it didn't just hit a soft spot and get an unfair advantage. On the Turbo mode, that introduces a variable that the other drills don't have, kind of like the 3rd gear on the DeWalts. So I try to factor in those variables and see what settings get the best out of each drill. If one of the other drills had an additional mode that seemed to hurt/help, I would try those as well. I thought so too. But later, I messed around with the drills and twisted them mid-air while they were running. When the anti-kickback feature activates, the LED does not blink like it's doing in this video. So that confirms that the anti-kickback isn't the culprit in these tests.

I wonder if it's possible to use more of the torque in the kobalt if you can hold it firmer. The anti kick back is stopping the drill, not lack of power. Most people seem to have the same results as yours. Does it really have 1200 lbs of torque? With the anti kick back, who knows.

Im not seeing seeing a failure of the drill especially not the hikoki. Your trigger manipulation combined with the position and angle of the tip also the amount of downward force you exert on the drill should consider a wide variety of factors like bit type material and desired outcome/depth amongst other factors like rpms if your trying to force the bit through the wood faster than it can physically do it youll notice those friction burns in the hole when your done. Theres really no real world use for drilling any 3 random holes that fast in my opinion. Anything your drilling something your gonna want precisely where it needs to be located. Just saying. Anyway, But i liked seeing the hikoki in action. Great video!

Hey Jim! I feel like you struggled with this test/ review, with equipment issues, etc! But you overcame, and it turned out alright. That was not meant as critical, but supportive. And I think you have established your credibility, so may I make a suggestion? Save yourself the time and trouble, by not showing the speed and battery level each time. I understand why you would feel the need, but viewers and subscribers just need to take you on your word and the reputation you’ve established. Other channels do this, and my feelings are the same with them as well. Viewers will just have to accept or move on. Now, when the battery drops a cell, that should be mentioned. I don’t know? 🤷🏻‍♂️ This test was really interesting as I was surprised by the performance of all three contenders! I was surprised the Metabo HPT didn’t do a little better, as well as how the Kobalt seemed to shut down too easily? And, I’m afraid I might have to walk back ( but only a little bit 😁) my criticism and skepticism regarding the Flex. I would add that leave these tools outside, and see which one still performs after having been rained on, etc, and how well they hold up on the jobsite. I know the Metabo will, and the Kobalt seems to as well, but it’s still too early to know on the Flex. But they seem to have confidence by offering theIr long ‘Founders warranty?’ But keep in mind Metabo also offers Lifetime warranty on this drill, with no hoops to jump thru! Thanks for watching and commenting as always, George! Yes, definitely a couple of challenges on this one. Someone had suggested the 7/16" hex socket adapter on my Round 1 video, and I should have just gone and ordered it on the spot. And on the Kobalt, I thought I had locked in the ratcheting chuck properly, but I guess not! I agree on showing the tool settings each time, and you're not the only one that made this comment -- moving forward I'll show the settings the first time and basically state that those will be the settings unless I need to change something (e.g. drop to 1st gear on a drill).

I just dropped my flex impact into a canal of rapid current water and it took me about 1 to 2 min to get it out. Never stopped working when I pulled it out. I was really surprised I didn't fry some of the electronics. It's been 3 days since then and still no issues. Hopefully none come up.

@@PhillyFixed whenever you do get to doing the review with the Ryobi HP can you try to use the 3 amp hour battery. Apparently it makes better use of the HP function because of the different sized battery cells it has. Just curious to see how it fares compared to the others

@@piqone1 I managed to find a P195 3aH a couple of months ago, the one with 21700 cells. I'll definitely test it, but it's worth noting that Ryobi discontinued it and none of their current battery models have 21700 cells, even the new generation High Performance 4ah. So it would be interesting to see, but not something you can go out and buy unless your local store happens to have leftover stock. Even Direct Tools Factory Outlet doesn't have any.

I just scored the metabo hammer drill w/ 2 4.0 ah batteries hard case kit for 13.95 , I'm so stoked I actually scored one of these unicorn deals I straight up couldn't believe it but at the same store they had two of the ac adapters that were on hidden clearance for 42$ so I grabbed both of those as well so for less than 100 bucks I got the drill charger two 4.0 batteries and 2 of the 36 v AC adapter so I'll never run out of power while using this drill , and now ilthay hd is doing it bmsm for Milwaukee I'm about to go score some ketchup bottle deals cause I need the Milwaukee fuel hammer drill since my tool brand of choice is Milwaukee however this metabo has me looking at their other stuff I like this 36v line so far i don't notice a difference in power between these and my Milwaukee's also I like how they feel in the hand def a good companion for my ketchup krew

@@PhillyFixed yep the AC adapters still had their 169 price tag on them too and the drill kit was on the clearance rack with a sticker that said 279.99 so I had someone scan it and he was like WTF I was like it's not broken it's just a unicorn and I ran to the register I've never been so stoked about a tool in my life other than maybe when I got a Milwaukee 8.0 battery with a free 3.0 both high output for 75 bucks both brand new in the blister. and the display drill at the store is the from the same kit so I'm gonna go back and see if I can the manger to sell me the display kit or atleast the drill with the 4.0 that's on it cause that's how mastering mayhem got the same deal he bought the display drill as well so I can give it to my stepfather

Hi, first I want to say that I’m enjoying your content so far and thank you for doing videos comparing the not so “PRO” lineup of tools as reviews like these actually lets you see the tool in action, and see how it stacks up against a comparable (in terms of cost/reliability/specs/real world application/ etc…) brand/lineup of tools; Rather than a well established, industry leading “PRO” competitor. There are already lots of those videos, and while they are informative and gives you an idea of how these smaller brands stack up against the best of the best; they don’t offer much insight as to which of the the “little guys” a person should invest in. It’s refreshing and nice to see side by side comparison’s of tools that are fairly equivalent to each other. With that being said…. I feel like this video doesn’t do Kobalt justice. I am not sure if anyone has mentioned it or not but while watching I couldn’t help but to cringe at the failing/sloppy performance that the Kobalt XTR hammer drill displayed during the video. But I think it should be known that it’s not because it’s not a good Tool, but rather the conditions of the way it’s being used. Nothing against you, the drill is just not geared towards competition style use. A few examples of what I mean are… 1. Early in the video, the bit fell out of the chuck somehow. I am unsure if you didn’t have it securely fastened in, but I feel that people should know that when you put the bit in and tighten the chuck down it has what feels to be a “locking” feature. You can physically feel and hear the “click” feature when the bit is properly fastened down in the chuck letting you know you have done it correctly. I only know this because I own and love this drill, and I have never had any issue with a bit falling out in the almost year that I have owned it, and I use it almost daily. 2. In the video the drill keeps stalling out and stopping in the middle of use…. Which on the surface and during the video reflects negatively on the it, almost making it look unreliable or faulty. But in fact it is a built in Anti-Kickback feature that automatically shuts the drill off if it senses a bind or if the handle suddenly jerks one way or the other. While not very good for a speed competition in which you are moving quickly per se, in everyday use and functionality it’s super helpful and improves safety. I am personally thankful for this feature as it has saved my wrist/hands quite a few times already. Not to mention the built in anti-vibration technology that is also fantastic for long use. 3. I can not tell in the video what torque specification you have the drill set on but it looked to me like it was set on 1 I could be wrong, and I’m not “calling you out” or anything like that because it may not have made a difference in the competition setting. But I think people should know that in normal use, the clutch and torque are quite good and actually function very well. These are just a few of the things I noticed in this video, and again I’m not criticizing or critiquing you, I love what you are doing. I just think that in this video the Kobalt is entirely misrepresented. And instead of letting it carry a reputation of “P.O.S”, give some insight and first hand information about it. I’m sorry for the long rant lol but I hope it helps some. Please keep doing what your doing! And I’ll be watching :)

Hi Jordan, thanks for watching and for your thoughtful comments. I need to revisit the Kobalt -- I don't believe I was locking the ratcheting chuck properly. I haven't had a chance to use the drill more, but I suspect if I turn the chuck back one click, it will probably lock in, and I just don't recall at this point whether I had done that properly or not at the time. Sure doesn't look like it. On the anti-kickback -- as someone who has tweaked my wrist in the past on a brushed hammer drill that lacked the feature, I definitely appreciate it on higher end drills. That being said, I think Chervon seems to design the feature to be particularly sensitive; when I tested the non-turbo mid-tier drill from Flex (also made by Chervon just like Kobalt), it kicked in way too easily. I'm not a contractor and my remodeling projects on the house have not been with the Kobalt, so I'm not going to take a hard stance on the topic, but in my limited experience I think Chervon should consider dialing back the threshold slightly for anti-kickback to be activated. As far as the clutch setting - when the drill is in drill mode, the clutch settings are bypassed entirely. Not sure why Chervon decided to put a switch on the side (3:42), but it is different than the majority of drills. The clutch settings are engaged when the switch is on screw mode rather than drill mode. Again, thanks for watching and I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback!

Just based on the tests I have seen so far, I have to say I am impressed with the xtr impact driver more than the flex. Xtr impact driver seems overall more durable than flex’s quick eject impact driver, but flex’s hammer drill kinda surprised me. It’s really hard to get accurate results with drills because it’s a very sensitive tool with many variables that need to be taken into account, but I think you did great. I kinda expected xtr hammer drill to struggle because its anti kickback feature is rather sensitive.

Same here, I had higher hopes for the Kobalt after the stellar performance of the impact in my testing. Actually, the lower-tier Flex drill (non-turbo that comes in the kit with the recip and low-tier impact) seems to suffer the same anti-kickback sensitivity as the Kobalt XTR.

The reason it keeps cutting out is because you have the clutch on the lowest setting if you put the clutch on the highest setting it won't do that cut out

We use the xtr daily it’s a beast ours doesn’t act anything like the one you have. I think you just got a bad one. I rip 6” holes into corian all day every day with no problem.

You should wear some Gloves. At least cut level 1 when clearing wood chips and holding the hot lag screws. The Kobalt drill sounds like its having some internal problems that could be why its not performing to its best. But Great Video overall.

You have great tests and reviews! I appreciate your channel, and loved especially the 80's intros. It was very funny, and creative! I would ask for you to consider this; spending less time on proving that you're using the tools correctly. It takes up too much time, and is a disturbing. You could instead just explain before the test how you're gonna use the drills, and then you've done your part in explaining yourself. I get that some people are frantic about knowing that you do everything correctly, but I think that worry is on them. Keep it up, and may God make you successful in this!

Kinda echoes what SoAlz said about the Kobalt. It spins fast but it's not the torquiest out there. Which, I think is probably fine for the vast majority of drill use. Good showing for all of them but the Flex is definitely showing itself to be a worth the premium over the Kobalt for those high torque situations. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing what the next Hitachi drills are like.

Like you said, most people would do fine with any one of these drills. Kobalt is still probably the best bang for your buck, especially with the full kit now on sale for $399 with the recip, circ, impact and 2 batteries. Plus the wheeled box is decent.

You're suspicious of the Metabo? Seriously? That thing's a beast. Have you looked at the specs on it? How do you know the Flex didn't hit a soft spot at the end? It was in the outer edge where the wood is less dense. They were both in speed 1, and you didn't use the turbo, so they should perform about the same considering the specs, and that's what you got. Also, picking up the Kobalt's slack midway is harder than driving it from the beginning and having the momentum as it creates a path separating the wood.

One of the two, Flex SDS Plus rotary hammers, the less powerful, has changed status from "non available", to "ships in 3 to 7 days" at Lowes' web site. Those would be interesting to see their performance also.
