Do you need a LUT to correct V-Log?
Which LUTS do I recommend for V-Log?
I thought I would share my thoughts on some of the more popular and highly rated LUTs for V-Log. (for use with the Panasonic GH5)
Explain a few fixes and tips that I would suggest, then show a side by side between-
*A manual correction in Premiere Pro
*GHAlex LUT (LogC conversion with ARRI LogC - 709 LUT)
*Leeming LUT (Corrected to bring exposure in line with others)
*Official Panasonic V-Log LUT (Corrected to fix skin hue issue)
Also, here are links to two vids I mention in this video, for further info-

10bit vs 8bit=

Nice comparison. The GHAlex LUT does look better in most cases and feels more happier and natural than the others. Your manual one wasn't too shabby. Keep up the good work.

Super interesting comparison :) My favorite definitely varied from shot to shot, I'd say Alex was my favorite overall but there were a few shots where it seems to push the contrast too much for my liking, shadows crushed and highlights too hot. Very nice footage!

Wow, very good comparison, thanks for that. The GHAlex Lut is the best one, followed, very closely by your manual corrections. Sadly the Leeming Lut is the worst. I've been using it, and hating it and I was using Filmconvert instead.

I've just bought the GHAlex LUT and I'm in a post Night-Shift fog and my brain hurts. Can I ask a question about GHAlex and editing in DaVinci Resolve? If I use the DaVinci Wide Gamut colour space do I still follow all the steps described in the litrature or do I miss any out? If you don't use Resolve then, don't worry

Have you tried comparing GHAlex to Color Space Transform in DaVinci. I think it is very similar. I’m transforming V-Log to Arri Log-C fix exposure and contrast then Arri Log-C to rec709. I can put in on the timeline for really fast grading but using grab stills and apply clip by clip is my preferred way.

I originally watchedf this when it came out last year, and at the time it was way above my head. (Still is) I've just bought the GHAlex LUT and Mr google brought this tutorial Front-and-Centre to watch again. I'm trying to get my head around the litrature, which is difficult as I've just finished a set of night-shifts however I do have a question which I hope you can help with, if you use Resolve to edit with? If I use Resolve's Wide Colour Gamut colour space, which opens out the LOG profile, do I need to

I don’t use resolve. So I’m sure I’m afraid. I pay for all the adobe suite so it feels redundant to learn another app. (But heat resolve is very good)
@frankinblackpool
@frankinblackpool 3 жыл бұрын
@@biscuitsalive No worries about the resolve question. My brain is full of wasps at the moment with only four hours sleep after three night shifts. 🥱 And as for resolve, its a lot cheaper than a subscription service and virtually the same workflow as Adobe. You have Adjustment Layers, Resolve just calls them something else and keeps them away from the Timeline to stop things getting cluttered. You say Adjustment, I say Node. "Pot-A-to, Pot-a-to" sort of sort of song. Cheers

@@frankinblackpool yep I’ve heard for colour grading it’s better than premiere. Normally just I drag clips to create a new sequence. And this formats the sequence for correct bit depth. (10bit/ 8bit etc) So I only have to remember to drag in highest quality clip in if I’m editing with mixed media. (Often use 10bit for 25p and 8bit for slow mo)

@Temersson
@Temersson Жыл бұрын
@@biscuitsalive Thank you for a quick reply! The difference between the two is poorly documented across the internet, IMHO, although the problem is real. If you apply a LUT that is intended for say VLOG, it will not be correct for VLOG-L. But the developer states which is which, although I've stumbled on a commercial LUT-developer that does market for GH-series and seems to not understand the difference between the two. 😢 Leeming ones are definitely for VLOG-L if purchased "correctly" meaning that you picked a VLOG-L-LUT... and are IMO the best for GH-series. Anyway, thanks again for a great vid!
@biscuitsalive

@@Temersson I’m no expert on non L V log. But it’s my understanding the colour is very similar but it’s flatter. So surely a Vlog L lut would get you most of the way there, then you could add more contrast. But yes I’ve only used vlog (non L) so it’s just my best guess.
@vladislavihl

I have a G9 but no V-Log L. My personal preference is Standard profile which reproduces the most accurate colors for my eyes. The only (big) pain is a poor DR of the Standard profile. Do you think it's possible to achieve the Standard's color accuracy with a V-Log L footage (all examples I saw here looks rather cinematic/non-realistic for me)? As for your examples here, the Leeming LUT seems to protect most details in highlights areas and I like this. But the sky colors suck... The GHAlex is steadily overexposed (I think even the Standard would provide more details in highlights there). The original Panasonic LUT looks the best for me if not some losses in DR in comparison to the Leeming LUT... So, I don't see any "perfect" solution here... Have you tried a simple L-Vamut-->Rec 709 color space transformation (with additional manual correction) instead of any LUT application?
@biscuitsalive
@biscuitsalive 4 жыл бұрын
I e tried so many combinations I can’t even keep track. If colour accuracy is super important to you. Try “natural” profile, with contrast and sharpness down a bit. That was the most accurate one I found for colour. Like every Panasonic profile it still makes more orange /warm than they really are. But it’s not bad at all. And will give u more wiggle room that standard profile.

To my feeble eyes the one in the upper right corner looks at tad sharper than the other 3 and a tad more green than the 2 luts on the left, so I think it's my favorite, also has a wee bit more detail in some of the shots of the sky, anyway lokks like You all had a good day at the beach :-)

In theory they all have exactly the same amount of detail. But certainly the GHAlex with the ARRI has a bit more punch. Easy to make give them all the same contrast level if that’s what you want. I was more focused on highlight roll off and skin hue.

thoughts on the sony a7siii? and it's purported 15+ stops?
@biscuitsalive
@biscuitsalive 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I’ve been mulling that over for a few days now. If the price was more closer to £2000 I would have bought it already. £3800 is just a bit too much for it. No doubt the price will come down to maybe 3500 in a few months. It does have everything I wanted. (Except internal ND) 4k 120 is a big one for me. At last super clean slow motion! The image looks great. I still like the form factor with EVF etc. I could sell my a7iii and Gh5 and a few lenses I don’t use and pick up the a7siii without spending money. But I still feel I would be getting ripped off at that price. (Sort of) I may wait and see what GH6 does. With a speed booster the DOF argument is negligible. And m43 allows a much wider lens choice. (Vintage, anamorphic etc.) Also the ibis will not be as good on full frame, and I really do love being able to get smooth handheld shots with Gh5. And I expect GH6 will do 6k 30 and 4k 120 10bit. (It’s likely at least) So yes, I’m torn on the a7siii. I expect the useable dynamic range is close to 15 stops in slog 3 maybe a solid 14. Wouldn’t surprise me. My a7iii has really good DR (but the 8bit can struggle in slog3) I think if you want to save money the a7iii is still excellent. Nearly as good in low light as a7siii Nearly as good DR Great autofocus. Clean image. Good battery life/EVF etc. Shame it’s not 10bit. But you can still get great shots in slog2 and cine2/4.

Speaking as someone who owns a G9 but who has never purchased/used VLog or tried 10bit etc, I'm really impressed with the ARRI LUT. I'm looking mostly at the scene at 15:16 to compare the beautiful skin tones and everything from the highlights on her cheek to the colours on her clothes seem more appealing to mine eye. In every scene I kept being drawn back to the top right. After the ARRI, I felt the Panny and the manual LUTS were very close - I know I would be very happy with either of them, which is good since the Panasonic one at least is free. I didn't like the Leeming very much - it still feels too flat for my taste but then I have a preference for more contrast rather than less most of the time. I would be interested in your views on filming on the GH5 (or G9) without VLog. What's the best alternative profile, and which LUT? Also, hello from the north edge of Newquay :) Glad you're enjoying the sunshine and waves!

There’s pros and cons. I found the highlight roll off best with Panasonic LUT. (Look at highlights in sunlight) But I thought the leeming LIT dealt with saturated colours best. (As long as not blown out.) (Look at yellow daisy) The GHalex and ARRI looked best out of box. It was close to a “nice simple grade” just after the basic conversion, with no other tweaks. For skin tones. I’m still undecided. I may do another video and focus JUST on skin tones with more controlled light set up. Harsh midday sunlight on wind chapped children has too many variables. :)
