Hi TOA student/ soon-to-be graduate here, studying diploma in digital media from the KL (Sunway) campus, just want to leave a few notes about the school itself. First of all, lecturers, throughout my 3 years in TOA I personally think that the lecturers are pretty great (at least for digital media course). Most of the lecturers i met are actually quite young and are pretty understanding of mental health issues that students go through as some of them are also TOA alumni, although most of them are quite young, TOA actually requires the lecturers to have 3-5 years of industry experience after graduation as well as a good portfolio that the lecturers have to show before getting hired. In my opinion, they teach pretty well and honestly have helped me and my friends improve a lot, sometimes even helping us after class hours and also gave us a lot of insights into the industry. As for the review at 5:05 I've definitely heard rumours about some course lecturers having favouritism, especially from the Penang campus, though they mainly stem from illustration or animation courses, but speaking as a person with friends from those courses, some of the lecturers are pretty friendly and i know one of them invited students on podcasts to discuss animation stuff there. Secondly, difference between diploma and degree, in TOA there is an option to take degree but so far, it's only for graphic design and digital media. Note, I'm from a digital media course and so I'm only talking about experience from my course.The main difference is that degree is has much longer semesters as well as different classes to take (eg. digital media degree has classes for sound design vs diploma that doesn't have that class) Another difference is that diploma is much more industry focused than degree as a lot of our assignments are based around branding whereas degree has a more free option to choose themes or brands. As far as assignments goes, most of our assignments are similar except degree has a higher expectation from lecturers due to the longer semester and the fact that degree students learn more in depth compared to diploma students. Degree also requires you to write essays and reports about your assignments whereas diploma mostly does powerpoint slides ( I say that but we mostly just use Google slides) on our progress. Thirdly, culture, most people in TOA are chinese, including lecturers, however the lecturers mainly teach in english but if you want to talk to them in chinese, they will explain to you in chinese but I am a banana so they talk to me in English haha. About international students, I mainly know there is an Indonesian community as well as an Indonesian TOA whatsapp group where all of them gather and juniors can ask seniors on advice, housing, shopping, tourism, work and such. Overall, i'd say most seniors in general are willing to help out juniors and a lot of people are introverted, but friendly introverts. The rest are just side notes from here but I just felt like saying them, no hate or anything just me rambling lol Fourth, yes the TOA website is old and i dislike it very much, they need to change it (it's not just you, a lot of other students agree). Ironically this is coming from a student who learnt web design in this school. Fifth, 3:35 that's the outside of the library, most people gather there during their free time or during lunch to do work/hangout together. Pretty cool place to work there, also the illustrations on the wall are done by alumni from our school and occasionally they replace it with new illustrations/fine art work from other alumni which i find pretty neat. Inside the library there are bean bags where most students work ( *cough* sleep *cough* ) and it's a pretty nice thing to have but since COVID bean bags have been kept in storage :( Also the picture was maybe staged because I've mostly seen people with hoodies and eyebags haha. Sorry for the long essay but this is just my personal thoughts and experience throughout 3 years of being in TOA, hope this helps someone :)

omg first of all, thank you for your input, i really appreciate it, you are helping a lot of people who are thinking of applying! second of all, i didn't know you can eat at 3:35 haha, that is really awesome to know, and honestly TOA is really cool, i've always liked it and the artists who came out of it, but yeah good luck on your graduation!

how about fees?
@shroomshroom6117
@shroomshroom6117 2 жыл бұрын
@@vii.f9347 fees would depend on the course you're taking, I'd say the most expensive course would be animation diploma which is abt 100k total for 3 years or so if I'm not mistaken.. (note that animation tends to me wayy more expensive due to the amount of equipment (eg pc rendering and animation software like maya) that you need to use from the school student accounts/ school pc).. However if you want to take fine arts, which is the cheapest, it's about 50 - 60k in total of 3 years Diploma. I'm going off of memory so take this with a grain of salt. It's better to find out by the school itself because I've already graduated so I'm not to sure if prices has risen. If you're talking about graphic design or digital media, they're both roughly the same price, abt 80k in total though graphic design is cheaper .. If I'm not mistaken I believe penang campuses have different prices because they have less equipment

Also after reading some other comments I feel the need to clarify this.. Even though I've stated a lot of positives in my comment, I was definitely burnout at some point during my college life. Though my course compared to others is actually way more relaxed, it actually still made me burnout and at one point, super depressed to the point I couldn't get out of bed (I'd say the COVID situation also contributed to this). There's a sort of hidden culture in TOA where whatever your seniors or classmates did, you need to try and top it or match the quality of it, which causes a lot of indirect and unspoken competition, insecurities and burnout among classmates, I have never seen any classmate of mine NOT go through this stage before. Because of this, a lot of people will sacrifice sleep or social lives or both which creates a toxic culture around TOA or just any college in general. Eventually, you gotta just accept that you are still learning and that you should go at your own pace in terms of learning and skill. I personally know that some people tend to give up and accept that their design is lacking and won't improve but I feel like TOA is the type of school that will push you to improve even though you're tired and need to take a break.. and I will say this... There is a fine line between being toxic and pushing limits and in some cases, lecturers will become toxic while teaching in hopes of making you push limits. I personally had about 1 lecturer like this and they essentially said "you're classmate can do, why can't you?" which does the complete opposite of pushing limits, instead, most of the time, it demotivates people to learn. Lecturers like that will break a class and destroy students self esteem however, there are some who considers mental health much more important than assignment quality and sometimes those lecturers will tell you to take a break, but you can't help but keep working because you don't want to be left behind and seem lazy sometimes to other lecturers and classmates. I've also complained about the toxic lecturer in a student survey that's conducted every semester and I was pretty lucky that the lecturer actually changed ways (I guess a lot of students complained) and they started to become more supportive than demotivating. Friends are also a key factor (and honestly the most important factor) for surviving, the amount of late night 3am discord calls I have with my friends to do assignments were helpful because if I do get distracted, my friends kinda just acted like a mom and scolded me. If you have a lot of friends, there is a better chance of improving your mental health, unless you get toxic ones (in that case, I hope you find better ones) plus it's kind of a thing where a class stays together, clowns together. And by that I mean, procrastinate together, complain together, cry together, it genuinely helps more than you think since people are in the same learning boat. But even with friends, I had to learn how to discipline myself in my studies and how to keep my passion at the same time and I only somewhat learned how to do this during my final year. A lot of people go to TOA thinking that they're passionate enough to handle the assignments but once the culture comes in, a lot of them lose their passion to continue, especially during first year. However some that stay eventually learn how to cope with it and learn how to balance it but at the same time there are those who stay burnout throughout their time in TOA. All I can say is that, at the end of the day, sometimes TOAs culture isn't for everyone but it is sort of a russian roulette kinda thing where you kinda just have to go for it to figure out if it's meant for you, if it isn't, I've heard Sunway courses are a lot more lenient but I've only heard that about the graphic design course. Sorry for the long comment again but I do hope this puts some insight into what its like in TOA...

I'm currently studying in my second year in the one academy, and I'm taking Animation. Is really expensive, people talk about burnout and that can definitely happen unless you are free to do work the whole day. Managing your time and being quick at work is important to take any of these courses they provide. Currently. I'm following the, once given work, finish on that day and that definitely helps me. The lecturers in Sunway anyway are mostly all very friendly, they care and I can feel their passion seeping out of their body. One of my lecturers are my favourite and he's SUPER good at critiquing and when you don't focus, he genuinely cares and get really upset. Animation is indeed very expensive. Is it worth it? Hmm... in my opinion, they teach you a lot of stuff, they mainly focus on 3D Animation but they do give you a course on 2D Animation, and you can learn tons of different stuff, including photography. Is up to people's opinions. I have yet to graduate and applying my skills in the real world, maybe I'll update on it when I do graduate.

Would like to input my bit, as I don't think reviewing colleges from their websites or Facebook page is a very progressive way of picking ur college/uni of choice. I'm a Malaysian Institute of Art Illustration alumni myself, and MIA really did help me in terms of growth for me and my art. I'm not sure what OP means when they ask about "anime" being in the website/pages because Illustration ≠ anime (just fyi) At MIA: - The fees are one of the cheapest in MY, considering it is half government. There are many financial aids and scholarships you can apply for. - You are not always asked to work on things that suits the taste of your lecturers, your peers or your audience. You are encouraged to pursue the style you enjoy the most. - You are supported through your journey by inspiring and encouraging lecturers (the Illust ones at least. They're by far the best) - You get trained with critical thinking, how to give meaning to your work, and how to convey it the best you can. - The pictures shown in the video are either incredibly old or inaccurate, because thats not how our campus looks like. Its not very flashy, its cute, humble, but does its job. - The illustration lecturers and department are great people. - MIA is also a majorly Chinese community, so if you are not Chinese/a Mandarin speaker (like myself) it could be hard at first. - The community at MIA is very small. But this is great because you get alot of one on one bonding and feedback from your lecturers and peers, its a very healthy environment for growing artists. Theres lots lots more that I can tell you, but would rather not write too much here (i mightve already did..) but if anyone is interested in purusing Illustration at MIA, feel free to hit me up :) I'm always willing to help out wherever I can, when I was a freshie, I didnt really have anyone to ask! Peace and love!

this is really insightful and i appreciate your input for MIA, regrettably i feel the school does not represent itself well (with old pictures and old student works even on their website/google) all these colleges (except dasein), i don't have hands-on experience, so i rely heavily on how they represent themselves on websites, fb, google etc. but at the end of the day this video should only be a reference and not a deal breaker for someone choosing a college, clearly they are required to do their research, i am just doing the introductions, also creating a space in the comments for students to talk about their experiences.

I don't think they discouraged anime art style but rather the kind of students who went there recently maybe weren't into it ?Like I saw way more bizarre art styles and it was encouraged by the lecturers . @@j0hn00arthur I actually ended up applying and enrolling to TARUC KL diploma in graphic design course. Buts anyways , 45k is the estimate for the whole 2 years of the course . You can get a discount scholarship based on the number if As you have . Mia is pretty loose on this as they accept A- as well . The lowest discount is 20% for 3 to 4 As . If you got 9As you can get a 70% scholarship or 100% based on extracurricular activities. Keep in mind these only apply for tuition fees and "other fees" are not included in this discount . Other fees like application/registration fee(RM 25p), orientation fee(rm 100,only charge on semester 1 usually) , school insurance, caution money , and resource fee . Other fees can add up to RM 1230 in semester 1 . And up to 880 for others semesters.

Regarding the place being compact, theyre planning to move their campus nearby and improve their facilities in the near future! Either way the college id recommend if you can handle the assignment work and manage your time (be weary of some drama here and there though, coming from a student thats just 4 months in 😂)

And the one academy from what I've heard seems well suited for an international student, however, because of recent economic situation globally that's way out of budget for me now. Undo academy(where I want to study), clazroom college and dasein( they don't respond to calls, texts and emails) are affordable but they don't provide any assistance in visa but I have figured a way for that as well. Now I wanted to know from you that if these colleges would be accommodating for an international student, do you know any international student studying at the college, can you survive in the college if you only spoke English(willing to learn malay), do they take classes in English and would you recommend me to enroll there?

This may be a bit late but I'm currently studying at Undo, on my second sem now. I would like to say that eventhough their lecturers are able to explain in english, few are fluent while most are not but u are able to learn just fine. The only con would be if u wanted to make tons of friends in ur batch, it would be pretty difficult depending on ur batch as well. For mine, majority speak mandarin/chinese and aren't able to speak english, unless you'll meet a few that's able too, which is always possible! Do you have any advice on how to decide between getting a diploma or degree, and which one do you think it more worth it? And was it difficult or challenging to find art related work in malaysia after you finished your diploma (assuming you started working afterwards)?
@yuuning
@yuuning 3 жыл бұрын
i think a diploma is sufficient, you get a degree if you want to teach. finding a job in illustration is hard because they pay little, i worked in design instead
