I believe, in this song he is pointing out random things that allow him to take his mind off of stressful/traumatic times. Things that allow him to escape mentally.

Yeah sounds about right.
@Toby-WanKenobi Жыл бұрын
@@dustygatrell-ru7tg It says he doesn't want to learn about anything that could harm him in the future, or to set boundaries for this harm. To be more specific, the chorus highlights the main intention. "The things that I've loved, the things that I've lost. Things I've held sacred, that I've dropped." When entering in any agreement, any relationship, there is a chance of failure. As we grow older and wiser, we calculate in general what the impact is with self-preservation as the key determinator. To not preserve the self can affect others. "I won't lie no more you can bet. I don't want to learn what I need, to forget". Every relationship is built upon trust, but we are not perfect, so we become more careful, but at the same time state our intentions, to ensure any new endeavor we begin in we have a stronger sense of opportunity cost for us in relation to what we're held accountable for since we become part of this endeavor. This doesn't imply it's necessarily bad, and the song might relate to not wanting to do anything again, which is impossible for most of us, but at the same time we are surely more aware of any contingency.

When Audioslave came out I thought it was so cool because Rage Against The Machine was a great band with a unique sound and Chris Cornell was an amazing songwriter who also had a sound of his own but Audioslave didn't sound like anything any of them had done in the past. It really was something new and exciting that didn't remind me of anything

The end of the chorus IMHO basically encapsulates the meaning of the song, "I don't want to learn what I'll need to forget." Why would you even want to know about the things that will cause you trauma if you'll just end up trying to forget them to keep yourself sane?...It's actually a very deep existential question...the same asked by Hamlet in the famous, "To be, or not to be" soliloquy...do we confront the troubles of the world, even though they may bring us down in the process? Or do we give up and "Sleep" or live in ignorant bliss...

Some context about the music video: It's about a boy (and his family) whose father was a fighter pilot. The father died in a war, and there was a funeral. The boy is trying to cope with his loss, and is venting his anger by focusing on boxing. You can see him playing with planes, and later throwing away those planes and even ripping off a poster of Uncle Sam. Like @newharlemrenaissanceproduc943 said, its about doing random things to distract himself of those emotions.

2:38. It’s his way of saying that remembering anything is abject pain and anguish. Edit. There are parallels between many of his songs in this. Every single song he had is either him conquering his self rejection, or his succumbing to his un-alive-ing. Focusing just on the song, without the video coloring it, it's about an older man doing the opposite things he did in his younger years, because it literally doesn't remind him of anything. Everything he claims that " dosnt remind him " if you notice are all innocent or vary child like things , things kids would consider new and exciting like hammering nails or studying faces in parking lots " the kid in the music video is forced to rush threw childhood and be a man do to his dads death . He's struggling to stay innocent while also trying to be a man and forget about trauma all three things at once . That's why I love Tom's guitar break down solo .like the kid is finally loosing it mentally and just explodes in the ring but realizes at the end after all is said and done . He just wants to be a kid and move on .
