I think Chris wasn't being honest. If you really listen to the words. He is referring to waiting for god. Like a Stone is a scripture in the bible where Jesus says he will be the stone where his church will be built on. The house with many rooms are mansions.Which he built for us. He speaks about a book he read, what book? He says blood to wine, heaven, angels. And says the patience of god to wait for us to find him. Either Chris wasn't honest or he just wanted ppl to read the words and find out for themselves

I'd never seen rather Chris said that or not, but that is how I've always felt about this song. He's thinking about killing himself while he's sitting in a motel room, and starts reading the motel bible while trying to decide what to do. He finally decides that for now he'll try to patiently wait for death like a stone. If you've ever been in that same kind of place and had to go through that same kind of thought process just to hang on for one more day, this song gives you a gut punch every time.

WOW!! You nailed it Lex!! Chris' voice was and instrument and was something special... as far as the lyrics.... I saw and interview with Chris (he was in his home) with a radio station and fans were writing in with questions someone asked him the meaning of this song.... he said he wrote it about the contemplation over his own spirituality.... EXAMPLE: 1)"In a room full of emptiness, by a freeway" = what's on the side of every major freeway/highway? Motels.... 2) "I was lost in the pages of a book full of death" = what's in every motel room? A Bible.... (which is technically full of death) 3) "Reading how we'll die alone and if we're good, we'll lay to rest anywhere we want to go" and "On my deathbed, I will pray to the God's and the angels, like a Pagan... to anyone who will take me to Heaven" = the contemplation over his beliefs... Just my thoughts on some of the lyrics We all know Chris was "deep" (for lack of a better term).... He had SO much to say in his life! To further see his greatness and maybe give us another take on his lyrics (of the same theme) check out "SAY HELLO TO HEAVEN" Chris in Temple Of The Dog (Tribute/letter to his friend and roommate Andrew Wood lead singer of Mother Love Bone) "I AM THE HIGHWAY" Chris with Audioslave RIP Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell and Layne Staley.... thanks for the music boys!

I saw him do a like 3 hour acoustic set at the Bena-Roya Hall in Seattle right before he passed. So honored to have been there and experience this mans GENIUS in such an intimate setting. Honest;y makes me cry sometimes.

Chris Cornell was a master at emoting pure emotion through his tone and timber. I am fairly certain he could have hummed his vocals with no lyrics and you would still receive the meaning of the song

I freaking LOVE the bass in this song, especially in the musical interlude, where it goes an octave lower on alternating measures on the minor note.

You guys should check out Temple of the Dog. It was a collaboration between Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam.
