While a lot of people would like to compare Rakim and Nas, the truth is you can't through the history of music. Rakim came way before Nas in musical generations. Knowing that a Hew generation is every two years when it comes to modern music, Nas first Album is beginning of mid 90's while Rakim is mis 80's. For me, I rate MC's on 4 criterias 1- Voice; Rappers obviously have different type of voices but some have the ability to modulate 2- Lyricism; the quality of the lyrics determine the rapper's intelligence and how he convey a theme. 3-Delivery; The Ability to cut words, sentences in a manner that attracts attention 4-Cadence; capacity to deliver on beat, music creating a coherent melody RAKIM possesses all 4. Most modern rappers can't. When people talk about Eminem for example, he is more a slammer than a rapper. He creates his lyrics a puts a beat behind it. That is why, you can't dance on his music. The last great one for me is Andre 3000. Just his cadence work on a song makes you dance. Go back and listen to him being featured on John Legend's song Green Light. T.I is another great rapper. Somehow if I had to come up with a list, RAKIM would be on top. You have guys like Pos (De La Soul) Speech '(Arrested development) Big Daddy Kane, Guru, Mos Def, Slick Rick and Nas of course
