I like the idea that elves are so scared of death it causes inaction. For humans death is already a certainty so it doesn’t petrify them nearly as much. For elves death doesn’t have to exist and that’s why they’re so reluctant to risk it all.

Instead of using a heavy weapon to overpower a D&D type elf in melee, why not use the shield to charge into the elf and knock them down or off their feet? They're also lighter after all. If it's possible, pin them beneath the shield until they pass out from the difficulty in breathing.

well, you can read the Witcher's books, and i think in the 5th or 6th, an elven Sage Avalac'h explains to Geralt why humans managed to drive out every other species around, basically human's fuse is short, but it burns so much brighter than anyone else's, he even states that both elven males AND females were attracted to humans because of their ''fuck like the world's gonna end'' mentality, basically becuase it was true for most of them, since their lifespan was so short, thus the amount of half elves that spawned, and these were obviously more attracted to the chaotic human lifestyle than the elven zen mantras.

"Out-breed them!" This is basically the story described in The Witcher series. Elves used to own the Continent and had a thriving civilization prior to the coming of humanity. Then the Elves taught people magic, agriculture, etc., then at some point, the humans started to clash with their once gracious hosts. Over a long period of time, humans wore down the elves through numbers. The Aen Elle elves are a different story as they took a much more hardline stance against humans as I understand it. Anyway, after centuries of erosion, humans replaced the elves of the Continent as the dominant race.

Elves are also often arogant and think themselves superior. You might be able to feign weakness against op elves or bait them into overextending. Alternatively prolonging the fight might also frustrate elves with this kind of weakness, having them make mistakes or overextending all on their own. Taunting could also work and pissing them off in general seems viable as well.
@steffenaltmeier6602
@steffenaltmeier6602 5 жыл бұрын
long-living elves are also often depicted as being stuck with tradition and being unable to adapt to new weapons and tactics. so using recently developed swords/weapons or rarely used swords/weapons, their experience advantage actually goes in your favour as you know the matchup better than your oponent. i am doing that a lot in videogames i play, where i pick up underused weapons/skills/factions/tactics and beat my oponent with misdirection and experience. i can imagine this working great against elves as well.

I almost feel like a net and trident would be a great way to fight dirty. If they’re dual wielding they’ll have shorter weapons which puts them in danger of the net. If they’re stronger we can toss the net and use the trident as just a weapon with a reach advantage. I choose trident over spear because accuracy matters less as you have more pointy ends. Also if the elves have a weaker constitution the small knick of a trident would be more meaningful than on human counterparts. Poisoning the tips with something with a strong smell like feces would make them pay more attention to the trident making them more vulnerable to the net...which will warrant a win.

Shad didn't even consider it further, like taking elf men and women as prisoners of war and forcibly breed them with humans, creating half-elves that would be indoctrinated to hate elves. Though that's obviously in a longer perspective and not all fiction has humans and elves being able to produce a viable offspring. Still they usually mature as fast as humans and they gain some of the traits of elves and would greatly diversify the human troops. Might cause social problems though, depending on humans' attitudes to elves.

The one big risk I see with the axe and shield idea is that the elves, if they know they're weaker but have better reflexes, will likely prefer to do a deflectional parry rather than a block, and, if they do, axes are more difficult to bring back into position than swords are; giving them time to attack while you're trying to bring your axe back into position.
@brokenursa9986
@brokenursa9986 5 жыл бұрын
That's why you have the shield. Viking-era warriors fought in much the same way, and they learned to use their shields very dynamically to account for the slow recovery time of their axes and swords. They would also attack in such a way that the opponent almost always had the shield in their face so as to prevent a counter attack.

So the biggest advantage Humanity has over Elves, especially the OG/OP Elves, is that Elvish society is functionally stagnant. They reached a peak millenia ago and haven't improved a dot since, sure they have beautiful lands and equisitive swords, they might well have perfected Medieval era technology. But therein lies the problem, Elves haven't advanced - they've had MORE than enough time to push past the Medieval era and despite this they haven't done so. This in my opinion, could be cultural, they live so long that they can't pull themselves from the habits and cultures they've become ingrained in, they're the big fish in a very small pond. Humanity though? we live and die constantly - we improve every generation that passes. Tens of thousands of years ago, Humans would have been monkeys, watching forlonly as the Elves dominated the world, thousands of years later and we've adapted - our metal work isn't Elvish but it's damn good - our numbers eclipse them but we don't live as long, to us they're still perfect beings. But then, we reach that peak, the peak that Elves refuse to pass. Whilst the Elves pat themselves on the back for another set of Myhtril armour, a Man creates the first flying machine. Whilst the Elves craft fine, woven silk - soft it would bring tears to your eyes, a Man ignites the industrial revolution. Whilst the Elves tend to fruits and plants we've barely even heard of, a Man splits the atom. And before you know it, the Elves are cloistered, holed up in small parses of land where they can convince themselves of there continued superiority. They have spent millenia looking down on Men, and from this moment, till the end of time, they will spend millenia looking up - as man leaves the planet in search of more than Elves could ever fathom. TL;DR Humanity is in a constant process of evolution, Elves aren't, they may beat us with blades, but how long can they continue to beat us before someone, somewhere, invents a gun?

@MrMarinus18 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed. It would indeed be so that elf society and technology would be completely evolutionary and never revolutionary. They would perfect ancient craft and not adopt new ones. Especially not ones that threaten the status-quo. This is actually what happened in China. Their massive size, population and resources made them virtually immune to danger. They also had an extremely stable social structure which could survive massive blows and brought great peace. However this made them incredibly conservative and isolationist which allowed the more adventurous and dynamic Europeans to outpace them technologically. Europe was violent so they couldn't turn their back on the world, they had to keep pace with the others. When new technology or practices demand they compromise on their values they did so as refusing to compromise their values could easily have them be destroyed outright by conquest. The Chinese were for centuries farmers and they had greatly idealized that. So even though industry like oil, coal and even primitive factories popped up in China they never were allowed to outpace the farm output and make China a net importer of food like the European nations. Their insistence on this also meant merchants were held down as they were seen as not producing anything for the nation. This left China's trade system to be quite inefficient and kept it small scale as merchants did not have the resources for massive trade networks. In Europe the governments supported trade and created several subsidized trade companies to make sure their merchants had the resources needed for long distance trade and to drive cost down by economy of scale. These public companies were eventually replaced with private ones but without them private companies wouldn't have been able to pop up. You can't take over an economic sector that doesn't exist. The Chinese did actually try somewhat at this with Chen He's treasure fleet and it was a massive boon to China's trade and it greatly increased China's influence in all the regions of East-Asia. However the growing power of the merchants and soldiers and the increasing importance of power and influence over Chinese values of loyalty and family working made them clamp down on it. Many still wonder what could have been if China had proceeded with the treasure fleet. At the time they had an amount of resources and population no European nation could even come close to and technologically they were mostly on par to even slightly superior. However after the destruction of the treasure fleet the Europeans spend the next 2,5 centuries perfecting the art of sailing and boat building as they competed in trade and war. The elves wouldn't keep their superiority complex though and they would face a similar fate to China. A rude awakening by one of the human kingdoms who utterly decimates and humiliates them and takes what they want. China for a long time also felt itself superior to all other kingdoms and when the British tried to open trade the Chinese treated it as tribute and just took the political trade goods without giving anything back.

Fantasy elves, well the tolkien archetype, are intrinsically connected to nature at a very fundamental level. Man if he never left Eden so to speak. It is against their nature to try to be above nature, merely a part of it. Whereas humans ate the fruit of knowledge, lost our semi divinity but gained the ability to advance and dominate nature. Without the religious connotations it sounds like a pretty unfair trade because of course we will surpass their silly little op gifts at some point

Personally, I recommend napalm against Elves. It destroys their cover (the tree hugging, pointy eared hippies) as well as does grievous bodily harm. What, Shad was talking about "Medieval" weapons? Well, to most people, WWI is ancient history. Napalm was used in WWII which would qualify it as being between ancient history and modern history. Therefore, WWII IS "medieval" and is a perfectly appropriate weapon's system. Ok, I am watching this really early in the morning and that was WAY funnier in my head. The voices were cracking themselves up... ;-)

I love these videos Shad :D Ironically enough, I think that an effective weapon against elves would be a longbow. If elves are weaker than humans, then their bows will have a weaker draw weight and possibly a lower range. Weaker elves would be less likely to wear heavy armor, especially since that heavy armor might impede their super dexterity. If they have less endurance, they are also less likely to wear heavy armor as it would tire them out. So without heavy armor (maybe less likely to have big shields too) the elves would be more vulnerable to arrows and less able to be as lethal with arrows too - despite D&D archery rules. Arrows also allow humans to attack elves who might be fleeing or maneuvering - which would be an issue with an extremely fast foe like elves. I think that humans fighting elves would be wise to wear armor. Elves would be worse in armor because of lower strength and/or constitution and if they wore it would be giving up their super dexterity more than humans. The more heavily armored the combat, in general, the more strength and constitution matter than dexterity. In a fencing match, dexterity is king and strength or constitution matter very little. In a fight between two men in full plate, dexterity matters far less and the strength/constitution become more key factors. I think that even if we use Tolkien elves who are superior in nearly every regard, these two tactics could help balance things. If Tolkien elves still only have a strength that is similar to humans' but have only half of the archers, then a long bow exchange would still favor the humans.
@joelsasmad
@joelsasmad 5 жыл бұрын
Arrows would work in large groups in an even battlefield but a single archer would be hard pressed to actually hit a super agility target without complete surprise, which would be hard to get in the first place due to their superior senses. If you are fighting them in the forest trees foilage could provide natural cover and camouflage that they would know how to use better than you and break up formations so you could not 300 style fill the sky with arrows. You could burn the forest but that is liable to puss off monsters living there that again they would know the locations and habits of to use against you. Going back to the super senses and agility they would be masters of guerrilla combat. (And most likely use magic to make up for their draw range which would make them have even greater firing range with their greater sight. But then again magic changes everything.)
@ShieldWife
@ShieldWife 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, single archer vs single archer may well be an advantage for the elf. Depending on the attribute differences. Forest combat would prevent the human bows from outranging the elven ones, but also keep in mind that a forest attack also puts the elves into close range with humans who are likely stronger, tougher, and more heavily armored. Sure, if we have elves who are wilderness experts and the stage a sneak attack on a human army passing through the forest, it would be a huge advantage for the elves. Then again, you give any force a home field advantage combined with an ambush and they're likely to win. If you had forest humans ambush high elves passing through a forest and they would likely win as well. They could get in close and the woods would obscure elven heightened sight, they could quickly close and get into hand to hand combat where stronger and more heavily armored humans would excel. There would be less room for the city elves to run around and maneuver, thus mitigating the dexterity and speed advantage. A forest is a good place for an ambush, especially if you're specialized in fighting there. That goes for any race/species. Though forest combat is relatively rare historically - Teutoburg Forest being an exception if a good example of a forest ambush. I don't think we can bring up magic or forest monsters, then its not elves vs humans anymore.

As far as stamina in tabletop games go, I like to view hitpoints as a representation of a character's stamina/ability to fight. Whenever my players lose hitpoints, if it's not a massive hit to their HP, I usually describe it as them still reeling from the force of blocking something with their shield, or barely dodging a lethal stroke - things that will wear down on a person as the fight goes on. When they take a heavy hit, it's usually the result of an actual wounding. When their HP hits 0, that's when the enemy finally manged to connect a powerful strike, overcoming the character's remaining stamina and incapacitating them. This also makes health potions seem less OP, since they're not usually sealing up massive gashes or other major wounds, but rather rejuvenating a person's energy and ability to defend themselves.

One of the greatest examples of stamina I can recall in fantasy is in Lord of the Rings when the three representatives of their race, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas -- human, dwarf, and elf respectively-- track the Uruks across Rohan.

Skeletons are usually depicted as moving slowly and predictably, and warbows are perfectly capable of severing a spinal column. Since elves are usually depicted as being good enough archers to hit a target that size reliably, I would suggest using a shield wall instead and trying to force a fight in the open rather than a forest.

@@alexanderflack566 "Skeletons are usually depicted as moving slowly and predictably" I have never seen slow moving skeletons. Almost every setting had them be human speed, with the exceptions having them faster. "warbows are perfectly capable of severing a spinal column" Even if you managed that, undead usually come in mass numbers and it depends on the setting whether that would destroy them or reduce them to crawling. In a few they'd put themselves back together, unless it was shattered or the skull was destroyed.

Prime example is the battle of Stalingrad in WWII, the Russians keep the German forces at bay and from taking the city, and continuing their advance, through the shear numbers of soldiers.

Funnily enough the aspect of humans outbreeding elves is a part of the elder scrolls lore. Skyrim was once inhabited by snowelves, then the Humans immigrated and after some time the elves feared being outbred. This led to an event called "the Night of Tears" where the elves slaughtered the humans. Ysgramor and his sons, Yngol and Ylgar, survived and fled to later return with the Companions to wipe the land clean of elves for what they have done.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 5 жыл бұрын
Well humans wouldn't breed more quickly as both races are limited by the availability of food. However the difference is that humans can recover from blows to their population much more quickly. So after a war even if both took the same casualties the humans are back up to strength far quicker. So the humans wouldn't straight up outbreed the elves but if they were in continuous war the humans would eventually displace them. The higher longevity of elves compensates for the higher fertility of humans. This is also so in nature where longevity and fertility balance each other out. However when outside forces come in the more fertile creatures have an advantage. In Skyrim I think there was some kind of large natural disaster that devastated both elf and human populations. However humans recovered from that much more quickly and took over large parts of previously elf land.

There are other races that do breed faster than humans. Goblins, and many kinds of orcs being the most common. But humans have an advantage over these ones. Humans are intelligent, while most Orcs and Goblins are pretty dim, which means humans can fairly easily lure them into traps and ambushes, outmaneuver them, etc. An Orc may be twice as strong as you, but he's also far more likely to fall for the 'look over there' trick.

@@kharnthebetrayer8251 In most settings I've seen goblins are numerous and intelligent (often sneaky with poisoned arrows), but small and weak. More like Warhammer's Night Goblins than their default. Orcs vary wildly by setting. Tolkien ones are extremely numerous and average intelligence, but no stronger than a human. Warhammer ones are really strong and really stupid. But as I said, I don't think orcs are nearly the strongest fantasy race on a grand scale, just one that would outdo humans.

In the science-fantasy series I'm creating, I made an elf-inspired race who fall under the "just as strong as humans but not as sturdy" category, except the approach I took isn't that they have less "constitution", but that their bodies evolved to be almost catlike or birdlike, with hollow bones and a strength-to-mass ratio built for quick bursts of movement, so while they are just as strong as humans, their catlike physiology can't take a hit nearly as well as the solid-boned humans (which I also elaborated into their culture as a reason why they're so good at medicine, being a race who get injured more easily if their precision reflexes are ill-timed or if they take a sharp fall or something)

thinking about the capabilities of Tolkien elves, it's heavily implied that they were of similar strength to humans - but perhaps a bit weaker. If you read the story of Turin, he was able to overpower the elf Saeros alone, even after being surprised. Beren was also able to leap up and pull Curufin off of a horse and then start choking him out. Tuor was able to take down Maeglin and throw him off a cliffside, so I think humans are quite capable of overpowering a Tolkien elf hand to hand. also, it seemed that Tolkien elves used bows for their preference towards guerilla warfare - in fact, oftentimes the elves came to great disaster when resorting to open combat. this is a bit of speculation, but considering the birth years of some elves mentioned in Tolkien's world and the idea that every time the elves get trashed in wars, they never seem to recover, I think his elves had a very low fertility rate. Feanor was an exception probably due to his impatient nature, but you never really see elf families having more than 3 children It's also never implied that elves are inherently faster than humans. There was only those times in The Hobbit where they vanished without a trace, but I put that more to the lighthearted and whimsical nature of the story.

How to fight an elven army? Siege weapons. Elves usually don't inovate. Elves are better at range? Ballistas and trebuchets. Elves have bows? Use paveze and crossbows. Elves are more skilled in melee? Overrun...like the Imperium of mankind in 40k. @@Merecir well it then also depends on the development of technology. If we're looking at the migration era then yeah, pretty much everyone is fucked. If we're looking at the death of sauron era then no they would be demolished in an open battle. A Warhammer fantasy style dark elf paveze crossbow testudo under the protection of siege weapon fire combined with carefully laid ignitable traps would fuck the elves...if they didn't have magic. Now if there is magic, the opponent should also have some form of mistic power availability. Because if not, then again, humanity is fucked. But by that time, the elves magic was waining so even if it would be present, it wouldn't be as powerful. So, to reiterate: a testudo with artillery fire accompanied by spearmen, sword and board infantry, supported by cav, even missile cav with bows or crossbows, light cav for distraction yata-yata. The elves could be outmanoeuvred and outnumbered. For backup I'd leave a platoon or two of archers behind to protect the artillery from unforseen bird allies of the elves. Against the trees, burning pitch and ropes work perfectly in conjunction with Dane axes. And let the elves get shsiskebabed in shield and short spear infantry. Any formation that tries to be a hero and charge ahead breaking formation would have shot dead. Bring in the reserve.

Wonderful look and take on this subject, I will definitely ask our DM if including this in the campaign will be to his liking. Beyond this, I think the combatants setup and armour is likely to be their saving grace against the elves here too. While a shield would be handy, I think more so in this case, it’s made more important, and I think you’re right when it comes to grappling with them, that even in the case of an elf being as strong and have as much endurance, grappling with them and closing the distance is still preferable to the alternative. Let them use a rondel dagger to really seal the deal once they close the distance, and if you want to be particularly brutish, integrate knuckledusters on your gauntlets and hope to your deity that it’s not your day to die.

Thanks for returning to this series! Always something to think about, even if I don't always agree with you. :) A combat system that takes stamina into account? You mean like D&D? Well, it used to anyway. It wasn't viewed as heroic, so was removed after 2e, it was an optional rule for 3.5e, but few gaming groups used it. my recollection of the rule as it existed and might be used today: After each round of combat, make a con check vs DC 4. Even a sickly person should be able to pass that, but there's a possibility of failure of course for those with really low con scores. Each round the DC goes up by 2, so everyone will eventually run out of steam, no matter what. Each failed roll increases your encumbrance and a -1 penalty to rolls so eventually everyone will become combat-ineffective. In 5e, just add a level of "Temporary Exhaustion" and short rest works for temporary exhaustion like long rests work on real exhaustion. (Long rests will also eliminate all temporary exhaustion.) I would also say that for temporary exhaustion, instead of "Death" being #6, make it a point of non-temporary exhaustion with each additional failed check. You can still exhaust yourself to death, but it takes a lot more work this way, and you're still more likely to die from combat wounds than from being too tired to fight. I'm not sure I agree that you could just overwhelm an army of elves, even a small one, with sufficient numbers of your own troops. Experience does count for a LOT, and with each elven soldier have centuries of experience and plenty of time to refine their fighting styles and forms, such an elf would be virtually untouchable on the battlefield. Using D&D as an example again, take a single 20th level fighter and put him against an entire army of 100 5th level fighters, and that lone 20th level fighter will win every time. Add to that the old 2e concept of "time in grade" where you'll just naturally go up in level every 2 years at the very slowest just from getting better at doing what you normally do, and someone who's 300 years old should be around level 150, higher if they actively adventure. Now, it's true that these are all really old game rules, almost as old as I am, and they are only game rules, not really representations of real life, but there is some validity to those representations. If you spend 20 years programming computers, you're quite likely to be a very good programmer (and have some really bad habits too!) and you're likely to know several programming languages, and know quite a bit about the hardware you're programming, etc. If you spend 20 years woodworking, you'll likely be able to build houses, and cabinets, and furniture, and statuary, and quite a bit of other stuff as well, and very fine detail work to boot. You may also know quite a bit about metalworking as there is no small amount of overlap between the two arts. As for fighting, try taking on a grandmaster of any martial arts school as a black belt, just expect to get your ass well and truly kicked, even if you've got 50 of your classmates with you. I do agree that such long lived elves would likely breed slowly and be rather risk-adverse.

Regarding the duel wielding thing, I think I've actually read a fiction series of all things that sort of touches on it. In the Rangers Apprentice series, the main character is learning a sort of dual wielding defense thing, and he asks his mentor about what to do if he comes up against people with axes. The mentor says essentially to just nope out of there, because that's not a fight your going to win.
