Many metal publications have a thing for ignoring Voivod, even Sam ignored them for the prog metal episode. People seem to forget how influencial they where to metal and rock in general. When the bands that praised you and cited you as an influence includes: Sonic Youth, Cynic, Death, Darkthrone, Gorguts, Pantera, Foo Fighters, Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, Soundgarden, Opeth, Dream Theater, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Metallica and, oh idk, THE MAJORITY OF THE MODERN METAL SCENE FROM PROG METAL TO DJENT, then you possibly a very influencial band. For fuck sakes, even Rolling Stone gave Voivod praise, they put Dimention Hatross in the top 100 Greatest metal albums of all time! wtf?
@Kalimdor199Menegroth
@Kalimdor199Menegroth 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, easily the number 1. That album revolutionized metal more than any other album from that time. It was way ahead of its time. The reason why Voivod are ignored is because their brand of thrash and later prog was way too adventurous and way too complex and unpredictable, thus not safe enough for the masses, even for the metal masses. What is mind-boggling is that people do not praise Voivod as prog innovators, as they do with bands such as Dream Theater, Queensryche or Fates Warning, who weren't as innovative as them.
@shawnsmith8558

I was slowly creeping out of my metal phase at this point and getting back into punk (a couple favorites from that year were from Dinosaur and the Butthole Surfers) , but Charlie Benante's drumming is undeniably great. I would label GNR as hard rock, not metal, but YOU, Sam Dunn, listed them as a contender on the video that announced the polls for the best metal albums of 1987. Since you made that album a metal contender, I put it at #1. Otherwise, I would've picked Anthrax's Among the Living as #1 metal album. So all you people who are negating Appetite's metal status, don't blame the voters; blame Sam Dunn (whom I respect, BTW, but HE DID list GNR's A4D as a metal contender, not me).

Relax folks, don't get so wound up and take other people's best of lists so seriously. As always, these lists are subjective and at the end of the day, there really is no "best", it's just about what your, their, my favorite records are, but I digress. On another note, Jeff Becerra was still delivering vocals and growling just like Chuck at that time(or vice versa) Obviously they had very similar vocal styles and voices, just saying. But between Scream Bloody Gore and Eyes of Horror, well yeah, Chuck definitely created the stronger record that year IMO, and a hugely important one at that. All in all, great video and albums! DC

If its by year, maybe it can be extended to top 10 so more people can get their top choice in, just split the video into 2 parts. And I also would like to hear what Sams opinion of his top album. I'd like to paraphrase the video: "The rest of Appetite For Destruction doesn't really hold up like the big three hits. FOUR AND A HALF STARS!!1!one!" Thank christ Martin Popoff reviewed '77. My personal top 5 metal albums for 1987, in no order: 1. U.D.O.- Animal House 2. Helloween- KotSK pt. 1 3. Anthem- Bound To Break 4. Motorhead- Rock 'n' Roll 5. Whitesnake- 1987 (argue all you want about how this album isn't metal, but holy shit John Sykes is on fire.) Hon. mention: King Diamond- Abigail

Excellent choice. If it were a top 10, I might also shove Loudness' Hurricane Eyes, Racer X's Second Heat, and Black Sabbath's The Eternal Idol in there somewhere.

Two that I always have in my Top 5 for '87 are Black Sabbath's The Eternal Idol (the only Sabbath album that really sounds like a follow up to Mob Rules - The Eternal Idol is probably Sabbath's most underrated album), and Alice Cooper's Raise Your Fist and Yell (a damned good straightforward, non-thrash, non-power Metal album).

It would be nice if you could do a Top Five Albums of the pre-metal years ('67 for example, with albums such as Disraeli Gears & Axis: Bold as Love). I get that this is a metal channel, but metal is such a wide genre that developed from so many genres of music, or included some elements from genres such as jazz, blues and even hip hop. As i am aware of the fact that Sam Dunn is not a metal elitist and enjoys other genres of music, it would be nice to see a series such as non metal albums for metalheads, or something like that. It would be a breath of fresh air and also a retrospective look on the things that were and on the things that are to come. Much respect.

I give many props for the 'King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime' T-shirt...that is one criminally underrated album from Faith No More! I would be absolutely remiss if I didn't trumpet your thoughts regarding 'Appetite For Destruction.' It was certainly a landmark album that came at a time when Pop Metal (I hate the terms Glam Metal and especially Hair Metal) that was quickly "cannibalising" itself. However, (like your commentary) it wasn't as consistent as history reflects. I always thought that 'Rocket Queen' was an unsung hero of the album, but there was a lot of material (just like the follow-up 'Use Your Illusion I & II) that was sub-par. This was (at best) a one-album band and will never understand their massive popularity with Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans alike. I would love to discuss this topic at length! Cheers, Brent
