Many metal publications have a thing for ignoring Voivod, even Sam ignored them for the prog metal episode. People seem to forget how influencial they where to metal and rock in general. When the bands that praised you and cited you as an influence includes: Sonic Youth, Cynic, Death, Darkthrone, Gorguts, Pantera, Foo Fighters, Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, Soundgarden, Opeth, Dream Theater, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Metallica and, oh idk, THE MAJORITY OF THE MODERN METAL SCENE FROM PROG METAL TO DJENT, then you possibly a very influencial band. For fuck sakes, even Rolling Stone gave Voivod praise, they put Dimention Hatross in the top 100 Greatest metal albums of all time! wtf?
@Kalimdor199Menegroth7 жыл бұрын
Yep, easily the number 1. That album revolutionized metal more than any other album from that time. It was way ahead of its time. The reason why Voivod are ignored is because their brand of thrash and later prog was way too adventurous and way too complex and unpredictable, thus not safe enough for the masses, even for the metal masses. What is mind-boggling is that people do not praise Voivod as prog innovators, as they do with bands such as Dream Theater, Queensryche or Fates Warning, who weren't as innovative as them.
@shawnsmith85587 жыл бұрын

And Candlemass - Nightfall?
@calinamariei79087 жыл бұрын
It would be nice if you could do a Top Five Albums of the pre-metal years ('67 for example, with albums such as Disraeli Gears & Axis: Bold as Love). I get that this is a metal channel, but metal is such a wide genre that developed from so many genres of music, or included some elements from genres such as jazz, blues and even hip hop. As i am aware of the fact that Sam Dunn is not a metal elitist and enjoys other genres of music, it would be nice to see a series such as non metal albums for metalheads, or something like that. It would be a breath of fresh air and also a retrospective look on the things that were and on the things that are to come. Much respect.

I give many props for the 'King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime' T-shirt...that is one criminally underrated album from Faith No More! I would be absolutely remiss if I didn't trumpet your thoughts regarding 'Appetite For Destruction.' It was certainly a landmark album that came at a time when Pop Metal (I hate the terms Glam Metal and especially Hair Metal) that was quickly "cannibalising" itself. However, (like your commentary) it wasn't as consistent as history reflects. I always thought that 'Rocket Queen' was an unsung hero of the album, but there was a lot of material (just like the follow-up 'Use Your Illusion I & II) that was sub-par. This was (at best) a one-album band and will never understand their massive popularity with Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans alike. I would love to discuss this topic at length! Cheers, Brent

can't complain about the list since is popular vote... but c'mon Sam that review fro "keeper" was quite unfair. (even tho is your opinion therefore there's no "fair, its just how i feel")
@jerkorulez7 жыл бұрын
Carlzdash I second your feeling. keeper is the most important record on power metal. period. I know Sam is not a fan of power metal; but hey come on! maybe being bias there?
@Carlzdash7 жыл бұрын
well of course it's biased, it's his opinion. I just think it should've gotten more credit for relevancy, even if Sam didn't like the genre
@jerkorulez7 жыл бұрын
Carlzdash sure that's my point as well. out those 5 I will argue keeper and scream have the most legacy. But hey it's just a popular vote and his opinion so no blame to anybody.

Testament ‘s the legacy what brutal album was it, can’t argue about it. Manowar’s fighting the world? Cacophony speed metal symphony? GNR it isn’t metal but appetite for destruction, it is an amazing album King Diamond ‘s Abigail, best king Diamond album of all times, gladly mentioned

I was 19 in 1987 and the Metal scene in San Diego was pretty lame. Most people went to all age Hardcore punk shows and saw bands like Hirax, C.O.C and M.D.C.

Perdix i was 16 and doing the same thing in montreal. the scene here was mixed. metal punk and hardcore. everyone was at the same shows

MJNation even though I was around during that time, I was not aware of most of the music coming out of Europe. With no internet, word of mouth about them was slow. Very few record stores carried their music, and if they did you always paid more because they were imports.

Here's another vote for Abigail. . . (And concerning a particular band, I'm only going to say the line between hard rock and Metal is a lot thinner than you might think - remember the 70's?)
