I don't know how anyone could think that the modern production used on Gene Hoglan's drums in Testament is better than his drum sound with Death or Dark Angel. I can't listen to the last Testament album because the drum sound is shit, and the whole thing sounds like it was produced on a lap top. Two of my favorite drum production albums are Cryptic Slaughter - Convicted, and The Accused - Grinning Like An Undertaker. I love the production on those albums. I would rather hear more productions like that than anything like the new Death Angel, or Testament. At least the new Sacred Reich are keeping the production old school.

I think it was definitely a step down from the production standards JP had set at the time. All the reverb washes everything out and takes away a lot of the impact heard on the punchier Screaming For Vengeance (for instance). I feel exactly the same way about Scorpions' Love At First Sting (also 1984) - compared to its predecessor Blackout, it sounds watered down (even though the songs were mostly killer). A lot of great albums were spoiled by digital reverb in the 1980s

Bought Ride The Lightning the day it came out and thought it was fantastic. Still my favorite. And you're right, never in a million years would I have thought they would get as big as they did.

You know what? It's a case of the system working. Good music being rewarded, no matter what the genre, in this case, very extreme metal.

Mercyful Fate despite the lack of sales certainly is 1 of the most popular Metal bands of all time. I have yet to meet a Metal fan that doesn't like Mercyful Fate. Either Manowar , or Mercyful Fate have got to be the best known underground band in the history of music.

Anyone metalhead who was 15 like me had all of these albums. Including the honorable mentions. Love it.

This year I reckon it's the hardest year to rate. Hellhammer's 'Apocalyptic Raids' normally gets forgotten as it came before Celtic Frost. This was huge for extreme metal! Also Yngwie's Rising Force set the bar for shred metal.

'84 is where extreme metal really took off in my memory, so many good underground ones.
@metalidads Жыл бұрын
@@mikekrause3671 absolutely agree. 1984 will always be my fav year. Plus I reckon Manowar's best contribution to metal was this year in the form of 'Hail to England' and 'Sign of the hammer'.

Great albums, all of them. Priest is my favorite band, but I dont like Defenders quite as much. The A side is killer, but the B side is very uneven to me. Ride the Lightning is one of the better Metallica albums and in 1986 Thrash bands would go way past heavy metal bands, but in 1984 I feel Hetfield’s singing isn’t yet great and I would place Last in Line (my favorite Dio album), Dont Break the Oath (my second favorite Fate album) and Powerslave (my favorite Maiden album) respectively as number 3, 2 and 1. Great year, and I pretty much agree with what the people have voted for. You are smart guys and gals!

Armored Saint? Symbol of Salvation is their peak.
@JDarkley5 жыл бұрын
@@gungriffen Oh, no doubt Symbol of Salvation is the best album (thought they've never put out a bad album IMO). But still, I would have liked to see March of the Saint at least get a shout out.

Greetings to the staff of Bangertv... Great review albums from 1984, I hope that you will feature heavy metal albums from the year 1986 - The Thrash Metal exploded the waves and slowly the downfall of Glam Metal;1991 - Grunge Era and 1999 - Nu Metal dominates the billboard charts plus Woodstock '99. That's all thanks...

Love the Lyle's Place shout out. Spent a lot of money there at one point. They were great at bringing in import albums, special releases and great dvds too.

I am really amazed at how fast metal genres got heavier and more extreme. The same year Ride The Lightning and Powerslave came out, Possessed and Mantas were busy developing the sounds of Death Metal. Never mind Celtic Frost and Bathory were developing the sounds of extreme Black Metal.

I respect the 5 picks though no heavy metal album has EVER beaten Don't Break The Oath in my opinion. It's a flawless combination of singing, skilfulness of the guitar duo, obscure lyrics and demonic heavy atmosphere.
