I'm dropping some of my favourites, who haven't been mentioned: 1. The Body - No One Deserves Happiness: The biggest ritual so far this year. A lot less aggressive than their collaboration with Full of Hell, but much more hypnotic. The trademark screams and the female vocals fit together amazingly well. So far my favourite of theirs and also probably my favourite of the year so far. 2. Full of Hell & The Body - One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache: An amazing collab. FoH's grindcore and The Body's experimental sludge just complement eachother perfectly. 3. Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä: They've lost a lot of their black metal, but it's still an amazing album. Basslines are as good as ever and I really love the vocals as always. Oranssi Pazuzu are still one of the best unorthodox black metal bands I know. Not as good an album as Kosmonument was, but still really good. 4. Atomikylä - Keräily: Fusing Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising is as amazing of an idea as it sounds. Psychedelic and probably my second favourite album of the year so far. If I don't die of radiation poisoning due to the listening to this amazing album all the time until the year ends, It will mostly likely end up in my top 5 of the year. 5. Almyrkvi - Pupil of the Searing Maelstrom: This is an EP that shows us again why the hype around icelandic black metal is so big right now. Not as interesting as his fellow countrymen MisÞyrming from last year, but still looking really promising. Maybe in a few years, Iceland may become the next france in terms of black metal. Also a newcomer, since you guys wanted to hear a bit about those. Currently getting into Rituals By Rotting Christ and Abuse to Suffer by Rotten Sound.

A bloody great list of albums! Have listened almost every one of these, and the ones I've not yet, I mean to. "No one deserves happiness" is just crushing! One of my faves from 2016 for sure. And Värähtelijä... my god, most progressive black metal record I've heard in years.

'Delirium' by Lacuna Coil is one of my favourite albums of this year. It's their heaviest, darkest work to date, and the best album of their career so far. It's a study of contrasts. It's an exploration of mental health within an Asylum theme and the instrumentation and lyrics showcase the perfect juxtaposition of madness, sanity, melancholy, joy, depression, beauty and desolation. Cristina and Andrea showcase new dimensions to their vocals and are like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Cristina has never sounded so resonant and belts out soaring choruses, while Andrea delivers monstrous and brooding death growls.

i never heard of them until a couple of weeks ago and last night they were recommended so have a copy of the album now and listening i have a hard time calling them a thrash band.....specifically the vocalist who is more a black metal style...that and the occasional full speed blasts which are far more black metal than thrash......though they also do some pink floydy type thing at the end so i suppose it's anything goes..... definitely a great album.....and fuck nitpicking over genres, so fuck me....

A lot of thrash metal bands have high pitched vocals, especially the German bands that influenced Vektor a lot. There are many example : Destruction, Kreator, Coroner, modern era Exodus...

Black Tusk and Agoraphobic Nosebleed both laid down some grade A sludge this year and deserve mention for it. Sludge gods the Melvins have released two albums, both of which are at their usual high standard. Child Bite - Negative Noise might be their best fusion of metal, noise rock, and post hardcore yet. Moving outside of metal to just good ol' heavy rock Black Mountain - IV is full of stoney/poggy goodness. Sounds like I need to hear those Death Angel and Floatsam & Jetsom albums.

the finnish band: Kalmankantaja (means Deathbearer)' s new album called "Tyhjyys" is definitely something to check out, they are a great band, they do Atmospheric Black Metal with an obvious Burzum influence, the album "Waldeinsamkeit" which has been released this year too but it's a Dark Ambient album so it's not relevant to Metal...but Tyhjyys is very good and feels a little bit like Filosofem by Burzum.

Quite a boring list for me, focusing mostly on the 'older' generation of metalbands. The latest Between The Buried And Me, was amazing, Textures with their new release Phenotype also blew my mind, and the 2nd part of their double album is still yet to come. Incarnate by KSE was solid. Still gotta listen to the new Ihsahn and Hypno5e, but I'm sure those will be awesome as well. Oh. And Gojira's Magma is coming out later this year so its gonna top anything anyway! :)
@TheFujac8 жыл бұрын
hopefully gojira won't disappoint.....the album is super hyped by metal-heads in general so it could be a let down if it doesn't out-do the link or from mars to sirius
@PorscheJon8 жыл бұрын
ikr. It's like they are completely oblivious to what NEW things are going on in metal. They should be paying more attention to the new generation of metal. At least Sam Dunn is sort of keeping an ear open to it, but those other guys are just stuck with their older generation of bands. They need to give some of the new stuff in heavy music a chance. And i'm not talking about new bands that sound exactly like bands from the 80s, 90s. That's just a regurgitation of the past.
@Direksone8 жыл бұрын
+TheFujac it wont be as good, judging by the songs they put out, but its hard to compare as well. Since L'Enfant they went with a more straight forward, songbased sound, whereas before they had epic drawn out proggy songs. I dig both the old and the new and I'm sure itll kick ass.

My thoughts on each of the albums put up on the chart, all put up while watching the video so don't give me shit for something I didn't know at the time: Abbath - Abbath: Dull, boring All Shall Fall Part 2. Sam, you need to actually listen to some new black metal besides stuff that sounds like everything else. Flotsam & Jetsam - Flotsam & Jetsam: Didn't hear it but from what people have said it's pretty good. I've never cared for the band overall that much. Vektor - Terminal Redux: FINALLY, worthwhile stuff to talk about. Thrash metal that's actually not just bland Eighties worship and stuff I've been looking for. It's not shitty re-thrash. Solely re-hashing what another band did better is not good. Taking an established style and putting a new twist on it is. Death Angel - The Evil Divide: You've got to be kidding me. MORE bland thrash metal with decent solos and vocals but riffs that bore and bore and fucking bore. Please guys, talk about SOMETHING other than thrash metal that nobody besides fuckers stuck in the Eighties will listen to 5 years in the future. Fleshgod Apocalypse - King: Very very meh. First half was pretty good but it got boring pretty quickly. Still better than the shitty Labyrinth, an album I USED to like. By the way dude, melody CAN be aggressive...there's no either or unless you think the middle part of Master of Puppets ruined the song. Wormed - Krigshu: Yay that was actually a really good album! Great tech death no matter what: insane, brutal, and unearthly. Gorguts - Pleaides' Dust: Agree. EP of the year so far. Rotten Sound - Abuse to Suffer: Haven't heard it yet. Savage Master - With Whips and Chains: Since I can't stand most "Eighties speed metal" I guess I don't have an opinion here. Aborted - Retrogore: Great album, great tech/brutal deathgrind that at times comes off as a cross between OLD Whitechapel, Dying Fetus, and Cattle Decap. Metal Church - XI: I give up. Hooray for more bland traditional metal. Chtheil'ist - Le dernier crepuscule: Awesome music that I loved when I heard it, kind of a spiritual successor to Demilich with some Beyond Creation in there. Dark stuff, awesome stuff. I gave them a review way back when it came out. Dunno about top albums of the year though... Amon Amarth - Jomsviking: Sam Dunn, please actually delve into some music besides the upper level. I hate to sound like a pretentious hipster but you need to check out more metal out of your own comfort zone. Dark Funeral - Where Shadows Forever Reign: Meh. Just, meh. Not a big fan of the band's stuff at all. Gutter Instinct - Age of the Fanatics: I should check it out. Sounds promising. Katatonia - The Fall of Hearts: AGREE COMPLETELY. I fucking love this album, it's my favorite album of the year thus far and just 100% beautiful. Also one of Jonas Renske's best vocal performances so far. So sorry assholes who forgot that they've been playing this style rather than death/doom for the vast majority of their career and for the most part have been doing it BETTER. Oh and Sam do some fucking research, Bloodbath had an album 2 years ago with Nick Holmes on vocals and it was awesome. Killswitch Engage - Incarnate: Yay for metalcore fear from elitists. Anyway this band is very consistent (with the exception of second self-titled) and this album is no exception. Anthrax - For All Kings: Well I can't stand Anthrax so maybe that explains it. Megadeth - Dystopia: The new Megadeth was pretty solid even if it didn't get constant rotation from me. I'm sick of giving "old school" bands spots just because they're older. Moonsorrow - Jumalten aika: Awesome. All I'm going to say. Rotten Sound - Abuse to Suffer: It was okay. Ihsahn - Arktis: SECOND FAVORITE album of the year. Fucking phenomenal stuff from one of my favorite musicians period. Kids, Emperor will never come back. This is what Emperor would be doing now, though. So be fucking grateful. Fallujah - Dreamless: Amazing album as well, their best release and atmospheric as all fuck. Great band live as well. In the grand scheme of things, not too bad of a list. I facepalmed a lot though.

I'm surprised. Megadeth is definitely one of my favorite albums to come out this year.

why NO Helloween? My God GIven Right has great songs... The Guitar tandem of Sascha Gerstner & Michael Weikath is stellar Charlie Bauerfiend is a great metal producer.. The songs were well written ,with a great collecction of stories..

What...no Gojira, Carnifex, Goddamn, Revocation, Soilid. Those are just the ones I can think of right now. All released killer albums in the first half of this year. I thought Gojira would make the list for sure.
