Great, I look forward to the next video on the Tascam.

What about using a shotgun mic (detached from the camera's hot shoe ) as a studio mic (e.g. sitting it on a desk and pointing it at yourself)?

Hi Yes this is a good idea also. The only small downside is that the sound from a shotgun mic will be slightly more coloured than you would get from an equivalent quality(priced) tieclip or studio mic

Thanks. That information helps. Hope you had a good Easter.

In what way do you mean "coloured"? Is that an undesirable side effect?
@Visionandtechnology7 жыл бұрын
Coloured means that the sound is tonally different. Like a photo that has a colour caste - not quite as perfectly reproduced as it should be

Coloured means the tonal balance is not quite correct

Hi Tim, Thank you for your informative video. I've looked at a lot of shotgun mic's but they all tend to be mono and I like to film running steam engines / trains, so want a stereo setup that is better than the on-camera mic's and that come with a wind muffler (dead cat I believe they are called). The snag is I've found them to be very expensive. Is there any particular make / model you'd recommend that is sub 100 GBP? Or even a means of hand-building a combined two mono-mic setup somehow? Thanks, Gareth

Thats a tough one, Do you need a shotgun mic as such. If you are filming steam trains relatively close up , background noise is hardly likely to be a problem ans an ordinary stereo mic would do the trick. Yes use a windshield of of the furry variety

Thanks Tim, I film trains / steam trains from anything from a few yards (as close as I can legally get) to a quarter of a mile or more, so background noise can be an issue. Which is why I thought a shotgun mic would be good? Would I be able to alter / shield aspects of an ordinary stereo mic to do the trick? Thank you, Gareth

As close as you can safely get too I hope! Ive no easy answer with the cost restraints. One thought though is that you could used a relatively cost effective stereo mic for the close up filming where stereo would also be most impressive, and a mono shotgun for the long shots where the difference between stereo and mono won't really be noticed. No its not possible to shield a mic, although there are some weird and wonderful DIY options for making parabolic reflectors . see: www.videomaker.com/article/f20/17144-how-to-build-a-parabolic-mic-dish
