This is the ultimate microphone comparison video. In this video I’m comparing 6 microphones for female vocals and in two other videos, I'm covering male vocals and rap vocals. I've got a huge variety of mics here - the industry's best and even a budget mic that's super popular for home studios. I demo the mic in three different songs with a blind test as well! The mics in this video include the Neumann TLM 103, AKG C414, Manley Reference, Rode NT1A, Neumann U87, and the Warm Audio WA-87.

On 1st listen - C,D, E listening blind only, (Warm Audio 87, Neumann TLM 103 and Neumann U87, respectively) were my favourites. I felt that these had an edge in the amount of detail, an possibly high end boost - not screechy, ,just clearer. Resolution being how realistic the voice sounded. The Warm Audio 87 was just OK, definitely better than A and B (the Manley and AKG Mics), the Neuman TLM 10 was a bit darker with a slight boost to the low end, somewhat thicker sound, while the Neumann U87 was also good. F - the Rode NT1 did not come up to quite the same level of clarity as the three favourites - see 1st sentence of mine above. This is one of the best tests I have ever heard. You did not if I recall, state which preamps were used, and if you did kindly remind me, and what audio interface/converter was used. The three microphones I preferred, had better articulation of the words, and made it easier to hear what she was saying, ie. each syllable. Fantastic comparison. All these microphones are pretty good, and it shows that the NT1 is a very good microphone for the price. Everyone should have one in their microphone locker. i.e it's all about your budget. Especially because during the mix, you can tweak each sound to taste, and the differences between these microphones, evened out. I agree with you Sanjay - the U87, is a bit rounded off, in comparison to the TLM 103, which I think pips the U87 just a bit, in the realism and resolution. In the mix, it may be impossible to tell which mic was mix. Fantastic - Fantastic - Fantastic, about the best I have ever listened to. Possibly also because my monitoring environment, is now so much better, that it was years ago, and I am now able to hear this very well.
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 2 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate your kind feedback! I used two Universal Audio Apollo 8 interfaces to record all the mics simultaneously. I used the preamps built into the Apollos. I did test a couple mics through my BAE 1073 and Tube Tech CL1B (I did not include these in the video), and the chain really "woke up" a few mics - even the U87.

In the blind test I picked the 2 Neumann's and the rode of all things. What I liked about the N'swas all the information they were able to capture while staying clean if not transparent. The budget mic seemed to be adding a fair amount of saturation to her lower register which just seemed to fit her voice, once listening back after the reveal I would have a hard time justifying low end mic considering that_ whatever character it has those_ its characteristics could aways be added back in but baking it in from start means you have to live with it

I haven’t finished watching the video but I chose E because I felt it complimented her voice much more and emphasised her tone, she just sounded smoother. It’s crazy how each of the mics made her sound different, I even questioned if she was altering her voice on purpose 😅 I watched the reveal and I see that I chose the most expensive mic, the Neumann U87 Ai 😂😂😭 it’s hard to go back, they all made the Rode sound so poor😭 I would actually save money just to buy that! I guess that will be my future goal. For now I need a mic for my soprano voice that will do a better job at blocking noises and accentuating my voice. ❤️ thank you for this video ! Edit: Just watched till the end. Your right, when you apply effects to the vocals, all mics are exceptional for her voice and does the job and make her sound great without the obvious differences. But the best mic for her voice has to be the Manley. It’s more “open” like how you described, like a live show/concert. The thing about these mics is how they process high and mid frequencies. I think it’s important to buy the best mic for YOUR voice and when you showed us the celebrities that use certain mics, I can see why they use them and their audio management team probably advised them to use the mic that will enhance their voice in a supreme way. Mic E, the Neumann Ai mic is best for Ariana grande because her voice naturally is very “rounded” and “toned”. The technique she uses to sing best resemble the settings of this mic, which is why it works and enhances her voice. The singer didn’t like this mic but chose the mic that made her sound most natural which was the other Neumann TLM 103 mic shown in this video. The other warm mic she chose was also good but seemed to lack resonance and space in her voice . I would probably do the same for her now that I’ve put things in perspective. Even with Billie using the TLM mic, it works with her voice because she does more intimate vocals and has a thinner voice, light voice, makes use of high frequencies so it compliments her voice because the TLM mic accentuates those intimacies in the voice. After asking myself why do these artists use those mics, I concluded buying a mic is all about the voice , which is why it is different for each person. So I changed my mind in what my “goal” mic is because I won’t know unless I try it out but this video review gives me great insight. The cheaper mics gets the job done too but I might as-well invest if I know what I want to use it for. This gave me a lot to think about. I’m leaning towards the TLM 103.. Thank you🙏🏾💯

TLM 103 was absolutely my favorite in all ways, with the U87 and WA87 tied for second. The TLM had a wonderful mid-range body that was JUST RIGHT and not too overpowering, and similarly had a high-end sparkle that wasn't brittle. The Rode was absolutely brittle, and I didn't care for the Manley at all. In fact, there was one section where I felt the Manley sounded like it was breaking up. Obviously the Rode completely broke up and distorted. I'm curious how a 103 would fare on my wife's voice. She has a soprano operatic style, quite different from the mezo R&B singer here. Extremely forward sibilance and annunciation, the kind that live sound engineers kill for, but that can also be technically challenging for a microphone. I'd like to find something that sounds great with my voice (high baritone, very resonant).

Thank you for that tests with male vocalist and woman on this episode ! Helped me a lot to decide to buy UAD Sphere, because I need many different mics but I have money to purchase only one decent mic, so DLX will be at the moment best choice to get them all :) TLM 103 is tooo bright, Warm Audio is like it try to stop waves, like something was try to block her sing...I dont think it will be easy to correct that on EQ. Best in my opinion was U87 and shokingly Rode NT1-A is soooo close to U87 on every test I hear on your channel. Billie Elish use now Telefunken 251, was recording on TML but previously even on AT2020, as Finneas said in some interview. If you have a lot of money, you should spend some time and money and visit premium recording studio, fair like Music Messe or music shop to test as many misc as you can and choose right for your voice. There is no argument like "this is great mic, Billie Elish recorded on that so It will be perfect for you"...no, otherwise you can record on Shure SM58 and fix everything in post :)

Great video as usual. Continues to show a great vocalist just comes thru. Plus, cost doesn’t always determine the best mic. Having more than one mic goes a long way. Different voices, different needs. Also higher end mics just have a way of sounding “ready to go”. For me it’s all about how they handle the top end and either enhance the mids or leave them alone. Right now my Telefunken TF-29 is my go to. But that Manley is on the list. Also interested in the Manley Silver. Overall Awesome video as usual.

My favorites are the Neumann U87 Ai, Neumann TLM 103, and the Manley Reference. The U87 and Reference both had a clarity (detail ?) and smoothness (magic ?) about them that stood out. The others were either smooth with less clarity or clear with no smoothness. The Neumann TLM 103 is in the middle with a some clarity and some smoothness. The TLM 103 would be a good compromise if $3K+ was out of reach. The Rode NT1-A did sound good in the mix, but might as well spend a little more so you can get exactly what you want when recording rather than having to fix plosives and peaks in the hi-end after the fact. Loved her voice and the video!

Great comparison vid for female vocal mics. Amazing vocalist! Yes, TLM 103 seems to be the "today's sound" mic of choice which was my first choice in the blind test. I am surprised that the WA 8000 was not in this comparison vid - even on the male vocal mic vid. Hope to see it in the male rap comparison vid. Lastly, I don't think that is a U87 in the celebrity pics - I believe those are a U67 - especially in Dua Lipa's pic where pro producer Kirk Kilpatrick had said a vintage U67 was used in all of Dua's vocals. U67 is one of my faves too especially for female vocals and higher toned male vocals! Love your works!

With processing my decision would probably change but just raw i liked the quality the gave. I thought A sounded a but flat but then in context it was quite nice. Listening on my airpods i feel like there aren’t MASSIVE differences, minor changes yes but nothing thats going to totally change your track. Do you agree? On studio monitors, again there may be a bigger difference, but ultimately most people dont have an incredible, sound-treated studio! 😂

@@SanjayC i think the biggest deciding factor for people looking to buy one of these mics will be the price tag. Not very often i listen to something and dislike the mic, only when its a very low quality mic/recording do you really notice. A decent mic for £200-£400 is more than enough most times :)

I also liked mics 3 and 4, same as what she chose. The sound on the high and loud parts aren't harsh sounding on those mics, that's why I like those. And it gave just the right sound for the entirety of the vocals. The naturalness and polish effect (w/o the effect) was balanced sounding. I love it!

Think I may roll with the Rode NT-1A, I can’t sing that great anyways so it sounds good enough for me. Appreciate the break down, ur review of the jbl studio monitors sold me & they’ve been perhaps my most favorite upgrade to date so far. =]

This great comparison confirms to me that all microphone needs to be evaluated in the mix and for that reason all we can admit that also the cheeper NT1a can handle the job very well near the other more expensive models. Too many times we are convinced that if a work doesn't have expensive gear can't be a great work, wrong. For sure a great acoustic treatment can help more than what we can imagine. In this comparison I was curious to hear the NT1 (non A) near the others, I think that is another great sounding mic, more flat in comparison to the "a" version. Well done and great video. Thanks

Before giving an opinion I think many people here need to understand harshness in the upper frequencies and air (openness), even the singer needs to learn this. When Sanjay compared the U87's you can hear how tamed the real U87 is. She really doesn't understand that. When she moves to the upper registers her voice sounds relaxed with the U87. I understand a lot of people desire the affordable to sound better but there is a reason why one costs so much more. Highs or treble might sound more lively but the detriment can be harshness, and people need to learn to distinguish in order to give an educated opinion. The U87, the TLM103, and Manley, personally, exceeded. The AKG is good although I expected better. The Rode is harsh, too flat and lacks openness. The WA was harsh.

I want an all rounder mic to record or do live, so I can get more authentic quality....do you have any suggestions. ❤ cheers

Hey Sanjay, nice video. But what about female rappers / singer ? Cause for me i'm searching a mic which can also give the sound of my medium/high voice but also not being "attacked" by the "Ss" in my rap lyrics. I feel that is different type of mic for male rappers & female rappers / singers Thank you

Sounded like the Manley had some kind of electrical issue going on in the second example. There's a slight buzz. Maybe a tube going out or something with grounding? The u87 really shined at 4:05. Would have loved to hear that passage on the others too.

The most expensive of anything doesn't mean it's the best or most favored. I liked the TLM 103 a lot. The Warm Audio sounded great to me as well. I can see myself using the Manley if a more "live" feel to studio vocals is the goal. I really liked the Manley for that.
