One big mistake on here as a couple of you pointed out. The Willie Mays photo is actually Monty Irvin. Sorry about that
@MrQuispxАй бұрын
Ahhhhhhhhggg….but, damn good pic of Monty
@RodericSpodeАй бұрын
To be fair, Monty Irvin is probably the best baseball player named Monty from whatever state he's from. I'll go out on a limb and say he's the best baseball player named Monty from the contiguous lower 48, assuming Monty Irvin is not from Alaska or Hawaii.

I was born and raised in Woonsocket, RI. I was waiting for Nap Lajoie to come up. Of course, i never saw him play as I was born way after his death. He was one of the best of his era. I think the last MLB player of any significance born in Woonsocket was Rocco Baldelli. Now he's the Twins' manager. He lived his HS years in Lincoln, though. He was only a little older than me.

Interesting Bruce Hurst tidbit. With two outs in the 9th inning of game 6 of the 1986 World Series, the scoreboard in Shea Stadium actually congratulated the 1986 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox and the 1986 World Series MVP Bruce Hurst.

One little note. Ted Williams had an 84 game on base streak If not for 5 years for military service Williams would have flirted with 3500 hits 650 homers and 2500 RBI. To me the greatest hitter of all time

A fun and interesting approach. As a fan of old-time baseball, I was tickled to see so many older players included. Many commentators ignore everything before 1960 - "Cap Anson? Who's that?" Only slightly disappointed Willie Keeler didn't make the Honorable Mentions from NY.
@tadlambert1493Ай бұрын
I like how you included both birth place and where they grew up.

A great idea and a great job. Just one flaw: the photo in the Willie Mays description is actually Monte Irvin
@subg8858Ай бұрын
That’s a pretty major flaw🤣

Good job on an interesting concept. Americans do love all the state-by-state comparisons and lists that are ubiquitous online. And it was educational; I had no idea where most of these players were originally from. Happy to see that you recognized Duane Ward, who is from my hometown in New Mexico. I got to see him play from age 11 and up in the local youth leagues, where he was quite the phenom. Otherwise, while I had a quibble or two on your choices (I would've chose Bob Feller for Iowa), you did a solid job. Some of the states presented an array of really tough choices.
@Bodyknowledge77Ай бұрын
This was edutaining! I had the opportunity to meet and get the autographs of some of these state's best contenders and winners. Most significantly was Mickey Mantle in the late 80's at his restaurant in Manhattan as a kid.

Im from Joe Jackson’s hometown. I still live here. He is a Greenville Legend.

Good job not to be seduced by modern players, many of which would have struggled in those early days.
@chrisshoemaker67Ай бұрын
I think Stan Musial is the PA pic. I grew up a Pirates fan and know all about Honus Wagner. I guess it could go either way. Definitely a much tougher choice than Ted Williams/Bonds.

Cy Young does hold baseball’s most unbeatable record, but it’s not the 511 career wins, but the 749 career complete games. No one’s even going to get to a reasonable fraction of that record again.

What a tough job you took for yourself very well done your last pic of Ted Williams was excellent the man was perhaps the greatest American male ever produced LOL
@big8dog887Ай бұрын
You did a good job with this one, I have a few that I would have chosen differently, but I can see your case. The only major disagreement I have is Indiana. Oscar Charleston is regarded as one of the top baseball players ever from any state. They called him the "Black Ty Cobb" or the "Black Tris Speaker", and people who saw both he and Willie Mays play said Charleston did everything Mays did, only better. Chuck Klein was good, but he also played at Baker Bowl, an extreme hitters park in an extreme hitters era. If you just discuss the greatest players of the late 20s-30s it'll be a long time before his name comes up.

Interesting that Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine either took their state or were very close.

I heard that Jim Palmer was born in New York City. He was adopted by character actor Max Palmer and his wife. He starred as a romantic man in Marx Brothers movies and others of that era. By the 1950s, daddy Palmer made enough to buy a mansion in Hollywood, California. Jim Palmer as a teen played catch with the family butler.

Glad you added a bunch of old timers on your list. There was a bunch of newer players you could have add from the last 40 years. The ones that are still playing shouldn't have been added to the list. They are not done with their careers. Overall you did a fairly good job in picking the right players per each state.

For South Dakota, I would make an argument that Mark Ellis from Rapid City was the better player due to his infield versatility, defense, and longer career. He was also raised in SD where Kubel moved to California.

One thing baseball has over other sports is because of their focus on stats recency bias is alot harder. But still you love to see the debates. Will say I sincerely think Ohtani is ahead of Ruth now based on time alone. if you need a firestorm video there's your topic lol.

How is Jim Rice not mentioned for South Carolina? Jeff Bagwell should count for Connecticut, even though he was born in Boston. That one falls under the Carlton Fisk rule. Interesting video though.

The best team in the world would be nine Willie Mays. Not sure if he could pitch, but he'd learn. And John Smoltz grew up three miles from me in Warren, Michigan, but his family left for Lansing in his youth.
@bryanreed3559Ай бұрын
Moved to the Lansing area in middle school & got to play at John Smoltz field for my first game. Was astounded to learn he was from the area. Not the greatest field but that had a lot to do with Lansings state of affairs but overall was awesome!
@duaneperkins8329Ай бұрын
Hate to say this but the best team would be 9 Babe Ruth's...as he could pitch (would have made the hall as a pitcher if he didn't hit so well)! Will was much more athletic but Ruth was more athletic earlier in his career. 😉

@@duaneperkins8329Ruth played in an era where pitchers threw around 75 and the slider was pretty new. If Ruth played now l don't think he'd do all that good.

If Puerto Rico ever becomes the 51st state it's still Roberto Clemente. Ivan Pudge Rodriguez gets an honorable mention. Only Jorge Posada another Puerto Rican native called a better game as catcher. The 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009 Yankees pitching staff prove that. Pudge was better at throwing out runners and slightly better with the bat.

It would. Alaska would only have 3 players. Chad Bentz, Marshall Boze and Chris Mabeus (Boze and Mabeus moved up here for some reason) which were all mediocre relief pitchers with only 68 games inbetween them.

Ted Williams is half Hispanic, making him the greatest Hispanic hitter of all time. You can't say Latin as Italian is the old form.of Latin which would include Mike Piazza born in Pennsylvania. Tommy Lasorda and Billy Martin are among the greatest Italian American managers.

Barry Bonds is the dumbest player from any state. He got insanely jealous of the adulation that Sosa and McGwire were receiving and decided to get into the game himself. The real fans knew that he and Griffey were far superior players.
@manfrommeeteetse3880Ай бұрын
😂 Ted Williams over Barry Bonds a difficult choice? You've got to be kidding. One is an American hero who gave up 5 years of his career to fight in two Wars. The other steroid abusing cheater. Hubbard over Yogi? What have you been smoking? Yogi probably the greatest catcher of all time? 10 World Series rings! Nuff said.

I'm sure it was just a mistake but, for the record, Honus Wagner was a third baseman, not a shortstop.

You are wrong. Wagner played 1887 games at SS, only 210 at 1B. He also played more games at 1B and OF than at 3B.
