You can lube the shift linkage in the engine bay. It's right on top the trans sort of under the manifold. Mine used to pop apart. Then I got a new connector and grease and it's been ok since. Thank you!! Now I want the short shifter!!

Shorter shifter tends to magnify any problem you have with the transmission, as you have less leverage. This is what happened to me on my ng 9-3(f35), after installing short shifter it became very difficult going into gears. As far as i understand, it has something to do with bushings or engine mounts and its recommended to change those when you are installing short shifter.

yes, thanks for that info. I can certainly see this is true. Existing issues with transmissions are magnified for sure haha. Time to get new bushings and mounts soon!

So our transmissions are finicky. If you are struggling to get in reverse just shift into 1st then i to reverse. Keep the clutch pedal in while doing it.

I've been rowing 1-4 before going into reverse and that worked well with the stock shifter. Now with the short shifter it grinds going into reverse about 10% of the time :(

@@BWTECH0521 Might have to do an adjustment, its really easy. Put it in 4th and see if a skinny allen wrench will slip into the alignment hole under the shifter boot. If not, keep it in 4th and get all the extensions you have and a 13mm. The shifter linkage is against the firewall straight down from the main engine harness to cab connector, break it loose and just move the shifter around a bit, I honestly eye ball it with the hole under the boot. You can get rid of the shift rubbing the housing by making minor adjustments. I have done this a lot with my project 9-5 because I have solid engine mounts and other things, I finally dialed it in.

If the lights on the dash are not from the battery most likely they are there because of an abs system failure(abs pump failure etc)… I know that from a 2001 9-5 Aero I almost bought which had the exact same issue, dash was lit like a Christmas tree but the car was working normally without any issues

they went away when I started driving! Thankfully it's not the ABS module failure (yet). I know they all go bad eventually :)

new shifter bushings, lube the linkage, change engine/transmissionmounts, even change the trans fluid might help with the amplified problems!

Great video/tutorial! Have you looked into replacing/upgrading the shift linkage as well? I've read reports that it helps the trans feel much notchier and less vague but I haven't embarked yet. It would be great to see a video on what that process is like!

I did hear about that. But whoever makes it doesn't make it anymore as far as I'm aware. I also heard they started making it upon request but I'm also not sure. I would for sure love to do a video on that. I don't like that vague feeling either!

Check the engine mounts, I noticed some shaking on the gear shift knob after you shift gears. Great job!

Am looking for information on how to fix a problem am having my 2000 aero have a issue with manual transmission reverse gear bought a new linkage the only one that was in North America still having the same problem putting car into reverse don’t know what else to do help.

From what I know, if your car doesn't get into reverse, it's because the syncros are bad. That usually requires a rebuild. Or as daveVQ suggested, first put it in 1st gear, then reverse.

Good day, greetings from Colorado. I appreciate the video. I have a questions for ya: I have 9-3 Viggen, it came with the short shifter installed. I took the SAAB to a SAAN specialist and he mentioned that the short shifters tend to not want to enter the reverse gear. Every gear is great, only reverse, I noticed that you have the same issue, have you had any luck making the reverse gear getting any smoother? Thanks, cheers.

Yes and no. So the saab transmissions overtime will get harder to get into reverse due to the synchros getting worn out. This happens even without the GS shifter. The thing about the GS shifter is, since it's more precise than stock, it magnifies any issues your trans already had. So it's not a problem with the GS shifter, it just "surfaced" a problem you kind of already had. Hope that makes sense. It helps to put it in 1st gear before putting it into reverse.

@@BWTECH0521 it makes sense. The mechanic has two 9-3 viggen’s and did mention that it’s a common issue. I’ve been doing 4th gear then reverse. I will try 1st then reverse when I get it out the shop. I appreciate the feedback, thanks!
