Fantasian Neo Dimension has been a good JRPG to scratch the itch lately as well

Chained Echoes. Large, distinct cast with unique abilities gives it an FFVI feel (right down to the part when the party gets briefly split into 3 separate storylines). It has the look of a classic 16-bit JRPG, but has just enough uniqueness to the combat to make it its own thing. Plus the plot’s pretty good too, though there’s so much going on, it takes a while to catch up and get all the characters straight.

The quartz system is in all the Trails games, not just Cold Steel.

Trails of Cold Steel is an easy recommend for me, but beware of the time-sink, although anyone familiar with JRPGs will likely know short games are uncommon in this genre. The 4th game in particular is ridiculously long.

All these games are winners. Octopath Traveler II had me hooked hard.

These games may be good, but they just don't hit like the pre-PS3 Final Fantasy games. The characters. The music. The mobs, monsters and lore.

Oh God..... I liked octopath traveler and the worst implementation in abilities to me is the job system. FF5 was ok with it but FF10-2 what a trainwreck. FF3 was half broken. Needless to say I never like the job system on any games. I was planning to get octopath traveler 2 as well..... Hard pass on that I guess

Same. The job class system doesn’t jive with me either.

Cold Steel is an insult to everyone who lives Final Fantasy. That you included this series assures me that you have no idea what you are talking about. Just for you idiots who think I'm a hater. I like Cold Steel and played the whole series. It's just completely different and has nothing to do with FF.

Yeah it doesn't make sense

Technically he did know what he was talking about, but it's not enough to consider it similar

I didn't notice until you said it, but yeah that's a strange comparison.
