I had Tibetan momos in Darjeeling. Tibetan momos are a top food in Darjeeling. Darjeeling is predominantly Tibetan, Nepalese and Sikkimese in culture so it's Darjeeling Culture Shock might show you a few different surprises that you wont find common to other parts of India.

Two Videos are coming out this weekend!!!! REminder to Travelers: Check travel warnings before going to Darjeeling. The town is going through political unrest so it may be shut down. I took this trip before it underwent it's issue of freedom from West Bengal. One of the top foods in Darjeeling is #Darjeeling Momos. Darjeeling is predominantly #Tibetan, #Nepalese and #Sikkimese in culture (Gorkha culture), so the culture shock of this town, its location and its operation may show you a few different surprises that you wont find common to other parts of India. Get ready... Don't forget to Thumbs up this video and follow me on my blog, Facebook and Instagram for more #travel inspiration!

Please Please don't use the term Freedom or Independence here......it gives a completely different meaning to the issue and it is absolutely misleading.......Darjeeling is not a colony of West Bengal......so the question of Freedom does not arise here.....It is one of the districts of West Bengal..... they are not at all demanding Freedom or Independence......What they are demanding is 'SEPARATION'......SEPARATION from WEST BENGAL'.....that is the right word.....They want another Indian State of their own called GORKHALAND......so please correct the word Freedom or Independence......It sends out very wrong message.....

+suvodip chatterjee I think you're very concerned with semantics. Apologies but the words mean SAME to me. And independence is my way of defining what I read of the situation in layman terms. I'm NOT political. I have no desire or interest in being so or debating on the matter. #antipolitical

GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa, I think you are in love with India. I see so many videos that you have of your travel around India and not the usual 5 star champagne sipping journeys, but with all the chaos, craziness and love. I wish you well. :)

+relentlessrock I am looking for a nice India boy to marry so I can live in India part time. haha. Abhishek Bachchan is married (and to the most beautiful woman in India)-- NO chance there. Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Irrfan Khan... all married! I've a long affair with India and want to go deeper in understanding if I can.When I don't travel, I'm watching a Bollywood film almost every week. As an American, I love my occasional luxury, but I'm more moved by the common (street) man... ; I want to experience how real local Indian's live and think.

Thank you so much for all your videos, I have a severe form of autoimmune disease, and every specialist Ive seen has firmly recommended that I do Not travel outside of the country because of my compromised immune system. Because of this I have to live vicariously through others. Watching your travels helps me get outside my "bubble" and takes away some of the grief of not being able to travel the world. So thank you and blessings be on you during your adventures.

- In Asia, it's crazy sometimes. I feel like 100% of my day is spend doing one simple task.. like going to an office for paperwork. Back home, we drive there, do the work, and drive back. Done in an hour. But when we are in a different world...it takes soo long to understand it all and do it. haha. Crazy. I hope you enjoyed it all 😇

+Edges of Earth Yaaas, if you ever start expatting it's even worse!!! Every one step forward is like 5 steps back. Especially if there's a language barrier. I used to have to have people read me an application form as I filled it out... Name... Address.. Thankfully, India's second language is English. One down, just the walking to go.

That's a great tip to ask the distance instead of the number of minutes away from a place.Thanks!!! Have also fallen into those traps... they kinda make a good story though lol.😅 I know you mentioned you're 5'8 but omg, you really are tall. You seem taller than those shared vans 😱😱😱
@grrrltraveler
@grrrltraveler 7 жыл бұрын
+Leah Luna Yeah, asking distance is better. The U.S. doesn't go by km but miles, so initially I asked for minutes b/c I didn't want to deal with conversion. PI uses km too I imagine. Indians can be smaller boned, especially when start going towards Nepal. Although I'm Asian, I think US soil just grows us bigger. haha BTW forgot to ask-- Does Darjeeling now remind you of Batanes?
@lunaleahh
@lunaleahh 7 жыл бұрын
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa still reminds me of Baguio/ Banaue.. especially with its steep road hehe 😃 Batanes is serene and tranquil with its green hills.... plus it's kinda remote. Hey Christine, love yr videos as always. Correction:These plates are not made from banana leaves but dried Banyan tree leaves or Sal tree leaves.. Momos are of the Lord!!!! :) And seriously, yes, it takes forever to do any paperwork-type task, esp. related to banking or money. I tried to exchange my old currency b/c the website said foreigners could, but overnight the RBI had changed their collective mind (of course, not notifying anyone). Spent most of the day motorbiking there and then waiting in a HUGE mob of foreigners and nationals in front of a closed bank 2 hours after its supposed opening time.

+Renit Rift i wouldn't say I'm food literate but probably lucky and curious. 🤗I do 7/11 videos; culturally they're all slightly different like McDs and I'm passionate about that. I've even slid a McDs dish in a food tour vid. They are the epitome of fast food for the common street man and differs by country ; it also challenges the idea of eating norms and basic survival. Being a tourist it's not easy to find good local food and I'm sure as a traveler you've had moments of bad "good food" (even in your daily life). I've def resorted to McDs when I felt timid about gambling on restaurants where I didn't know the language. 😉❤️

I'd say you are and I also like that you have the nerve to try the local and exotic. It's like people going to Hawaii and not trying poi or squid luau. (I love poi!) That soup looked good by the way. I actually got wicked Moctezuma's in Nevada of all places. But McDonalds and Pink Slime I cannot do! They've doused it in ammonia so perhaps it won't give you the runs today but something might show up another.

GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Haha I get what you are saying about whispering lest you draw attention of the people nearby. But I still think you might want to work on the post production just a little bit so as to remove the background noise in the parts where you are speaking. I am not sure how you could achieve that though. A software called Audacity might be of some use. Tbh I don't have much experience with video/audio editing so I might be speaking complete nonsense.

Respect to those guys who carry a lot of weight and they even earn very less. They get like 100-180 Rupees per day and for a lots of work. Momos are also available in Mumbai, momos were started here like 1-2 years back and now they are quite common everywhere. I only like to have steamed or baked food when I'm outside so South Indian food and momos are a great option .

GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa The situation is worse. There are garbage pickers, or puddle cleaners who are not provided any kind of protective masks and gloves but still have to work like that. To bear the bad smells some of them actually get drunk so that they don't feel they are doing such a filthy job. And there are stories of people dying because all of this. I really need a change here for that.

GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa.......It would be wrong to use the term 'Independence'......They are not demanding a separate country......They just want separate Statehood......A separate Indian state of their own what they named as Gorkhaland......it is not a freedom or independence movement.....it is a movement for a separate Indian State.....so please don't use the term Freedom or Independence in this context.....

Hi Christine! How long is your trip in India? Which cities have you been through? I traveled there in In May this year, but couldn't handle it for as long as I planned to stay. I flew into Mumbai and wanted to make my way up to New Delhi and then to Nepal. EVERYONE I met there discouraged me from going that route as a solo female traveler, so I decided to head south instead to goa area. I guess my biggest shock is seeing how India is still very backwards in the ways they do things and how controlling their approach to things. I felt like I was in a country that's still in a war and there is no organize democratic government system whatsoever. The crowdedness of people everywhere, the living conditions, the biasness towards foreigner, and the mysogynistic attitudes towards females broke me a little. I decided to get the eff out of India on the 5th day! It was a waste of a visa!

This is what happens when you don't do your research before you travel. Any seasoned American or European traveler who's spent enough time in India will tell you that the first requirement for navigating India is to keep an open mind. India is nothing like what you're used to the US. You keep expecting things to be as they are in Western countries, you're going to be disappointed. India is an experience of it's own, and in order to see that you need to leave your assumptions behind.
@suvodip100
@suvodip100 7 жыл бұрын
India is definitely not a country for You.....It is better if you don't come to India again.....It is a country of 1.25 billion people with an astounding diversity in everything be it language, religion, food or geographical terrain......If you expect an Europe like experience here then you are completely mistaken......If you think India is backward then please check India's rank among world's largest economies.......It is the third largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity GDP and sixth largest in nominal GDP.......but it is a developing country with a very low per capita income that prevents India from becoming shinning, clean tourist destinations of Europe......It is definitely not suitable for every foreign traveler......but many solo female travelers from foreign countries come to India every year......some of them are KZbin vloggers like Christine.....You can check the KZbin channel Travel Vlog IV, Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos or Gabriel Traveler for Indian travel videos......India is for people who are open minded and can accept diversity and are ready to go out of their comfort zone.....but if you want to experience India without any hassles then you have the option to stay in super luxury five star hotels and also travel by five star trains......If you are ready to splurge then you can have a super comfy experience in India......but most importantly you have to have an open mind and you have to accept the cultural shock.....It is really ridiculous that within just five days of travel in this seventh largest country of the world you understood everything about how the country functions.....Let me tell you as an Indian that it is not possible to explore the entire country even in a decade.....and it is definitely not for everyone to enjoy the beauty of India.....

It's a commonly used and recognized word for western travelers. The term embraces BOTH positives and negatives of a difference but it's up to the user or viewer as to decide which it means for them.. Wikipedia: Culture shock is an experience a person may have when one moves to a cultural environment which is different from one's own; it is also the personal disorientation a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country, a move between social environments, or simply transition to another type of life.[1] One of the most common causes of culture shock involves individuals in a foreign environment. Culture shock can be described as consisting of at least one of four distinct phases: honeymoon, negotiation, adjustment, and adaptation. Common problems include: information overload, language barrier, generation gap, technology gap, skill interdependence, formulation dependency, homesickness (cultural), infinite regress (homesickness), boredom (job dependency), response ability (cultural skill set).[2] There is no true way to entirely prevent culture shock, as individuals in any society are personally affected by cultural contrasts differently.[3] Culture shock is

GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa The term might embrace both positives and negatives, but what's important out here is what you embraced, right? This video is yours and what did you embrace? Positive or negative? Viewers will decide anything but your take is important. No disrespect whatsoever but I'm just asking.#Peace ✌️

My answer is in the definition. and in my question-- what did you take away from my video? Would you want to travel here? Did I experience a negative or positive of a place?

GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa The video and everything looks positive for me, but title "culture shock" seems a bit negative for me, it's not a germane title in my opinion. Just my opinion though. #Peace ✌️

You can have an opinion, but I will say... Life is filled with negative and positive. Beautiful and ugly. Light & Dark. Both are necessary to balance, fulfillment, understanding and ultimately, a deeper appreciation. My goal is to honor and experience both and work on embracing all... is closer to truth. Did I enjoy climbing a mountain with a cold? Hell no. But I"m glad I did for the roads and beautiful lifestyles it led me to... Dude, what's wrong with you? Why are you trying to dissect every word a foreigner, who is in love with our country, is saying in an unscripted vlog? Even I, refer to Darjeeling as a Nepali region of India; nothing wrong with that. Now if want to go into technicality, by all means do it, but expecting a tourist to be 100% correct about a place they're only visiting for a short time is profoundly stupid.
