I have just bought a Mac Studio Display and after a couple of weeks I started noticing a 1/2 inch yellowish glare line running all along the four edges of the monitor. I have returned the machine which here in Europe costs even more than in the US. I still cannot believe this.

It's kind of amazing how Dell are almost the exact opposite of what a Mac user would go for in a computer, but their monitors are genuinely great. Been using their displays for years along side my Macs and PC's. I wouldn't touch their actual computers with a barge pole though lol. If you want to get into the super pro level kit then Eizo and NEC are where it's at. They're reference monitor level accurate (as in they're literally reference monitors). Not for the budget minded, but if you need absolute colour accurate precision they're pretty much as good as it gets.

The Philips monitor I purchased was a PHILIPS Creator Series 27E2F7901 27" 4K UHD IPS. The Quickstart instructions that came with it said not to lower the screen any further than 5° down or it may fall off I guess they don’t have too much confidence in this product themselves. Much happier with the ASUS PA278CV that cost only $249 and works great with much better color and not all washed out 1440 resolution 2K display is perfect for the MacBook. As Mr. Ronco used to say on his television commercial set it and forget it. 🖥️👀

One thing you may want to include, which is very important all of Amazon reviews, including the Phillips, 27 inch with over 4,000 reviews are a combination of more than one monitor. For instance, the 27 inch which cost $399 is combined with the $239 32 inch curved in the reviews. i’m just guessing but I think the $399. 27 inch Phillips monitor that first appeared August 3, 2023 probably has fewer then 1000 actual reviews. I still purchased it though, because of the four year warranty and the compatibility with the MacBook Air M 1. should be arriving tomorrow. I’ll do a follow up keeping my fingers crossed.🤞🖥️

Well, I thought I do a follow up on that Philips monitor. It turned out to be a complete piece of junk. It arrived with no USB-C to USB-C cable, and the Quickstart instructions said not to angle any more than 5° down, or the screen might fall. The picture never looked quite right on any resolution and most importantly, the freaking brightness was hopping up and down every time I changed screens or opened an app. After about an hours worth of use, I put it back in the box and sent it on his way back to its home on the shelf at Amazon. 👺🖥️ I then purchased,an ASUS 27 inch PA278CV which came with a three-year warranty for $249. works great with the MacBook M1 air right out of the box. 1440 resolution is perfect, calibrated color is excellent spot on proper USB-C to USB-C cable was included. Easy hook up charges my MacBook nicely with 65 W of power. I would strongly suggest skip the 4K and go 1440 if you have a MacBook and use the extra $200 in savings for a decent 2 terabyte SSD external drive. 💻🖥️🤪

Can you explain if there’s a difference between a 4 or 5K retina display and a 4K LG monitor or other brand? Is a retina monitor more crisp to show fine details?
@craigneidel
@craigneidel 2 ай бұрын
The 5K has a world of difference in my opinion but you will pay up for it. 4K monitors are fine but won't be as crisp as a 5K.
@mikeg5372
@mikeg5372 Ай бұрын
I have the Apple Studio Display and another 4K monitor (a Lenovo 27.5”) side by side in my daily routine. I wouldn’t say that the crispness is that different. If you look really hard, it’s there. The 3 biggest differentiators IMO are 1. Most other monitors come in matte display. The ASD OTOH looks far better because of this. 2. Peak brightness. If you’re in a well lit environment then the ASD can get brighter than most other monitors on the market. 3. In a dimly lit environment, is where the ASD shines (pardon the pun). Most other ordinary 4K monitors display shadows at the edges or more like uneven colours. This is referred to as light bleed. Apple has done an excellent job at this minimizing this effect of standard IPS displays. Don’t get fooled by others saying 60Hz is awful, blah blah blah. The vast majority of people don’t spend time trying to memorize the fine print while scrolling. What I would suggest is this, try finding the ASD second hand or refurbished. Don’t pay full price. Finally choose the right configuration for you. Tilt, tilt and height, VESA mount. I chose the latter.

The difference is, that Apple doesn't bother to make their operating systems work nicely, with standard resolutions in the computer market. Like for example 4K. 1080P, 1440P and 2560P is standard in TVs, Windows, Linux and other operating systems. But Apple wants to sell their own hardware, so they make odd resolutions. They also do not adhere to color standards, like Rec.709. Very few other companies make monitors, that will work with Apple retina, for the simple fact, they know, they will not sell a lot. It simply just doesn't pay off. It's a win-win for Apple, and the customer is the one who gets screwed.

Great Video. I got the ProArts 4K PA279CRV and the 1440p PA278CV to compare. So much research and arguments I've seen about how 27 inch monitors should be in 1440p or on Macs. More technically explained articles and videos suggested 1440p. I don't know if people are just convincing themselves its better because something is "4k" but ultimately I choose the 1440p version of the 27 inch. The difference is very obvious between scaling down the 4k monitor vs the native resolution of the 1440pm. Also in these monitors specifically, the 4K version colors are just off. Looks like something with the White balance that can't be adjusted. Unless you have the money to get a bigger 5K monitor, then 1440p is great. Speaking to the ProArts specifically.

So you bought a lower quality monitor just to justify the “scaling problems”? Are you people serious? Will it always be better to have a higher-performance, higher-quality monitor for enjoying audio, video and streaming content than a lower-quality screen just to meet the needs of the Mac? Needs that are reflected in what? Having sharper text and a few shinier pixels for graphics work? Bah

For his home computer my dad has a Mac mini. It’s like a flat square box and he has an off brand monitor. Now the monitor is not working good anymore. My dad went and bought a new Mac computer. However to transfer data off the Mac Mini we need a screen/slash monitor to access files. He only needs it for data transfer but he is trying to stay with apple products just to have no issues. He doesn’t want used because he says you never know what you get with used. I looked around on internet and I don’t even see just straight monitors and if they are just monitors then they are expensive like a 1000 dollars expensive . We only need something long enough to transfer data so cheap as possible. Dad might have to buy one of those off brand 100 dollar ones you are showing on video. It’s only just for data transfer so anything more than the 100 dollar range is too expensive for our purposes

Hi I just came across your videos and i found it very useful. I am by no means a tech person nowadays. However I have gone back into DJing and it’s all digital now. The problem I am having is that the Mac monitor is so small to contain all the info. I tried it on a tv panel and once I scaled up the graphics it froze. Is this common? Is there a monitor that won’t load up the processor and crash it all while upping the graphics quality? Thanks in advance. 😉

My fear and doubt is that it has 250 nits. From your experience, do you think 250 nits is enough? I'm going to use this monitor for web design, coding and also for watching movies and series. Thanks and I I'm glad you watched the video. I appreciate that for sure. I just have heard about scaling so many times and it's true but most of the time not an issue. I just did a review of the PD3225U which is 4K at 32" and it does the best job at scaling that any 4K has done at least in my eyes. The issue is that we have too little choices when it comes to 5K but the studio display will have the sharpest text for sure if that is the higher priority. But at $1,600 most just can't afford it. It should really be around $899 and I think that would be a good deal. Anyhow thanks again for the comment and for watching. I didn't want you to think I was calling you out for your comment.

Sometimes throw a movie on and haven’t even touched gaming. But gaming isn’t out of the question but just not priority. Want good color pop and quality and just smooth screen coexistence. @@craigneidel Ok, but then I question how expert the experts are when 27" 5K and 32" 6K provide natural scaling for Macs, and all those "recommended" 27" 4K monitors force the Mac GPU to work much harder as they scale up to 5K then down to 2K. Also, the 6K 32" Dell is being sold within a couple of hundred dollars of the Apple Display. But then again, everyone needs to research multiple sources, even if their sources use multiple sources.
