Great vid for the overclocking enthusiasts who have OCD about VRM's. Not so great for more mainline viewers like myself. The info was valuable of course, but the title should really be "Best VRM Boards for AMD Ryzen 2018". That's what I feel like I just watched. Not a lot of info on feature comparisons, aspects of the build quality that DON'T have much to do with the VRM, not much on various usage scenarios. I was hoping this would help me decide which board to go with. It only informed me about which would overclock best based on VRM's. Not even a lot of info on why so many of the other boards were "terrible". Thanks anyway though. I did get some new info, but it just wasn't useful to me. When I'm ready to get serious about overclocking, I'll know exactly where to go.

You are not on the right page. The motherboard market is highly competitive so pricing and profit margins are very tight. There are typically only 2 areas to cut cost on a motherboard, features and VRM. The problem with cutting cost on VRMs is longevity, stability and heat, even at stock clocks. The best board is most often the one with the best VRM at a given price point. Gigabyte for example loves piling on the features and bling on their cheaper boards but at the cost of terrible VRMs, I would not recommend such boards. The info in this video is immensely helpful in that it highlights the 2 areas you need to be aware of while considering a new board, VRMs and features. Throughout the video he mentions "fine for a 2600x" for example, using some logic you can extrapolate and make a more informed purchase. You plan to build with a 2400g? You can get away with a weaker VRM and thus pick a more feature laden board. Naturally, if you plan to keep the board for a while and possibly upgrade the CPU later you should choose based on your desired upgrade. VRM components and cooling solution are my number one consideration when picking a board these days, heat is the enemy and you do not want to compromise on areas that could cause you heat issues down the line. At the end of the day it works like this: Choose a selection of boards to consider based on your understanding and knowledge. Read/watch reviews on all of them Make an informed decision based on the combined information/knowledge

Well... The High End Board should be the Asus ROG Crosshair Hero 7... The Statement about changing the BCLK will lock the CPUs frequency is actually wrong. der8auer actually tested exactly the case mentioned. He put a 2700x on a Crosshair H7, changed the BCLK, changed the voltage offset and powerlimits and got the 2700x to boost up to nearly 4,5ghz on a single core via precision boost... I can also validate the CPU not locking up on baseclock after changing the BCLK on my Crosshair hero 6 with my 1700x. After that is ruled out, the awesome build quality and the awesome UEFI of the Crosshair Hero 7 makes it a better choice over the Aorus Gaming.

This is probably the only review from GN that I haven't liked so far. Buildzoid is great but for a video titled "Best motherboards for AMD Ryzen 2018" he focuses mainly on VRM and overclocking support and that's about it. When buying a mobo you focus on much more than overclocking ability and VRM and Buildzoid doesn't cover those features at all. When he does he makes some mistakes like the CH7 having no Code display like the Taichi, but it does have that you can even see it in the picture he used in the video. This video should have been titled "Best Motherboards for overclocking AMD Ryzen 2018" and not specifying that will be a bit misleading to a lot of people.

@themining_pickaxe43556 жыл бұрын
@Bill Nanos I disagree with your argumentation. If I can see what features a mobo has, can't I see what kind of VRMs it has? and chokes etc? If you can find all the data online, you still don't know "oh, how well are the VRMs cooled?" Yes, thats what buildzoid can tell you. But the same goes for other features. "oh cool it has that feature, how well does it actually work?" You need independent reviews to answer that.

video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix my self a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm really a shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I can introduce my self. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she has a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I want the best for her and I harbor no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seems happy with her boyfriend, so I did not bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it, I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already when I first saw her. Besides, I am quiet happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wants to live some other life without me in it, so I said, okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness. My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally can't take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get my self a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video. She said, you know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

I don't care about overclocking.. it's pointless to me... I feel that is the reason i am buying a high end cpu ... so i don't have to overclock it... therefore.. i am more concerned with which mobo is able to run the high end AMD cpu's the best and also gives me the most or best complimenting other features. I like a stable system.. I want it to be able to run 24/7 day in day out and never be shut down, I want a system I can hook up ten to 14 hard drives (I have a boatload of video on HD), I can load a lot of memory, and.. if i feel like it I can play a game on. I want to be able to watch my shows, transfer files well, network well with my other computers in my home, I hook up my computer to my 65" tv and use it from across the room with wireless mouse & keyboard. I don't know which is the best mobo for me, but I've built in the past using Gigabyte and they've served me well in the past. I wish this video was more suited to people like me who don't care about overclocking.. and just want to know which is the best mobo for a 8 or more core cpu. Also knowing which other attributes might be good or prove more valuable to me in my situation. If someone else has an opinion, i'll gladly accept it, thanks for your time.

If all I had to do was a small over lock to achieve the performance I wanted for a particularly low price I wouldn’t pay more to achieve slightly better performance without overclocking
@MultiGamerg5 жыл бұрын
Kinda a late reply, but. If you don't plan on overclocking then you really only need to look for features you want on your mobo, which is all neatly displayed on the manufacturer's website. For what you want you just need to find a semi-cheap mobo that has a lot of I/O and sata ports. Really today any ATX mobo has a lot of both, just don't buy some no-name brand one.
@tonkatoytruck5 жыл бұрын
I really don't like the word overclocking. I prefer to call it "performance recovery". CPUs and DDR memory all come with very lose timing\frequencies at first. This is because performance varies from CPU to CPU, memory stick to memory stick. So, they set the timing loose so that everyone's machine boots up without any problems. Great for the mfgs. but not so great for the consumer. Lots of free performance just sitting there if you do not recover it. And with anything in life, moderation is the key. Ryzen really benefits from these efforts and so does quality system memory.

Simply put, overclocking runs the risk of shortening the lifespan. I don't understand why people go mudding, drifting, drag racing with their vehicle they depend on either. I can understand doing it with a spare vehicle for fun, research, or because you want to spend a lot of money.

I can't understand why GN didn't do this video as all that matters to Buildzoid are VRMs not all round he even did not consider the Bclk capabilities of this motherboard. Can't understand this video.

@FeelTheThunder you know that if what you say is proven at least you made a better job then what Buildzoids did in the video cause you still gave more info. It is stupid to say that the Asus board has nothing more to offer then the Taichi and the Aorus gaming 7 when it is the only mainstream motherboard (both from Intel or AMD) that can do the RAID NVME with the PCIE lanes from the CPU and the price difference isn't that big. Also I am not sure but he is wrong about the Bclk with the Asus board I think it handles it better because of the Asynchronous mode. Just watch the review by Wendell on the Asus board.

First of all, This should be titled Best Overclocking Motherboards for AMD Ryzen 2018 - AM4 X470 & B450, as all it is is overclocking this & overclocking that. What about us normal people who Don't overclock? Overclocking features mean Diddly Squat to us, and if you are an newbie who's building their first PC, all this is confusing as heck. Second, gotta do the mandatory "Is MSI paying you for this" comment. :-D I say, I SAY That's a joke son.
@augustosantos68606 жыл бұрын
Well, if u dont overclock u realy should bother choosing a mobo, just pick anything that have what u need. But yeah, i think the tittle would be better if was "best mobos for overclocking..."
@f4rensabri6 жыл бұрын
Even if you dont overclock, if you're going for the 6-cores or 8-cores Ryzen, you will still need boards with good VRM setup for durability. If you're going for the APUs or 4-cores, only then you can choose whatever board you like.
@oohshiney81796 жыл бұрын
"Normal" people overclock all the time. To a person who builds their own PC and overclocks going on 12 years+ you are actually not normal because the information you are looking for is basic and in the specifications tab of every motherboard when viewing for buying. At this point you are asking them to read you a bed time story.. something you can do by yourself when looking up the motherboards yourself. Overclocking is not the only reason you get better VRM. You get them for upgrading purpose. For instance, the next gen ryzen 2 may fit in the socket only if the VRM will be strong enough or the processor now can do ram rates up to 4000mhz so those boards with the bigger VRM is now capable of handling those speeds with maybe a bios update Etc.. And also for a planned mini ITX build this was really helpful none the less and really it had nothing to do with overclocking.
@rawdez_6 жыл бұрын
then you go with pentium gold or i3 and not AMD Ryzen
@prdx85435 жыл бұрын
Normal people do overclock if you plan to buy X version. The processor has automatic overclocking capability. Even when they don't know it, X ryzen overclocks itself. So yeah. No matter what board you pick, ryzen will overclock. But its potential are only limited by board's VRM capability. Also, ryzen will use same board for the next 2 years. Picking the right board with right power delivery will save you money from buying a new board when you want to upgrade.

Question for Buildzoid and GN, now that we know some more details of Ryzen 3000, do you think that the top end x470 boards, like the taichi, taichi ultimate, etc will be good boards for not only running 3800x or the 3900x, but also good for OC those chips as well? I know, wait for reviews to get facts, but it is interesting to hear/read your opinion(s) since you guys work a lot with these products and have good insight on how things might/should work.

Why were these boards basically rated on VRM alone? This is a very misleading and narrow way to review a motherboard. Case in point, which one of these boards was used to set Ryzen overclocking records??? Oh that's right, none of them... There's more to overclocking than phase count, and it's no where near what determines a quality motherboard. Steve, you know this, and this review was sub par to when you do them yourself. Sorry, but Buildzoids view on mobo's is narrow and misguided. The video should be labelled what it is... Buildzoid reviews VRM's.

If you need a motherboard to just slap a build together then this video isn’t for you. Just about anything out there that works will do that for you. This video was targeted towards anyone that overclocks their board even slightly. And these are the boards he felt that fits a casual on air OC’ers best. Maybe a better title will help. But there’s nothing misleading here. Especially if you have watched buildzoid for a while. There are plenty of other videos out there that review features of boards on stocks settings.
@bayanzabihiyan74656 жыл бұрын
narrow and misguided ??? First of all, aint nobody here setting overclocking records with their hyper 212 evo or H100i cpu coolers anyways. VRMs are THE BEST way to evaluate a quality motherboard vs a bad one. Good VRM = good power delivery = more stable overclock, that doesnt overheat the motherboard and cause your system to shut down. (This includes phase count, mos-fet efficiency, filtering quality, and heatsink quality which he took into account) The second most important feature is the bios in which He did take into consideration basically ripping on MSI for lacking needed settings needed for PBO and APU OC. Anything else can be found on a spec sheet.

@@romevang I watch Buildzoid and have been subbed to him for a long time. That doesn't change the fact that overclocking shouldn't be the deciding factor on what makes a board best. The boards mentioned aren't even the best overclockers. The MSI boards lack voltage offset which he mentioned. That alone makes them garbage for OCing Ryzen 2. Boards should be reviewed based on what they're designed to be used for and the overall quality. That involves looking at user experience, feature set and reliability, not just VRM phase count and heat sinks. That's fine for AHOC, but not for a Gamers Nexus video.

If I remember correctly. Asus downgraded their VRM with the 400 series. The x370 had a 6 phase with 60 amp power stages (like the reccomend msi b450i). While the newer b450 and x470 changed them to 50 amp instead of the previous 60.
@needausernamesoyeah6 жыл бұрын
@Alb 92 Thats true. I wish that my B450 pro carbon had voltage offset. Buildzoid said that he has a MSI contact now, hopefully their someone that's able to help get that implemented in their bios. While the 60 amp power stages would probably run cooler at the same output. With a negative offset you might be able to get the same or better performance, even if the 50a ones are less efficient on paper.

The Ryzen platform shines for its amazing value proposition. Running stock or with a mild overclock using the included cooler or a cheap aftermarket cooler preserves that value vs. performance equation. However, once you embark on the kind of overclocking which mandates >$150 mobo's plus >$70 for cooling, just to get that last 200-300 MHz, the savings from going AMD are literally combusted, with the byproducts being extra heat and power consumption.

I actually bought the gigabyte b450 miniITX board recently to run a 2200g, and I can add a few comments on it. First, there doesn’t seem to be a VRM temp sensor, or at least not one HWInfo can see. However, my crappy non-contact ir temp gun seems to indicate the VRM is staying plenty cool. Second, I haven’t finished overclocking, but so far the SoC VRM has been totally fine for maxing out the Vega side of the chip. The CPU side is actually the far bigger driver of power draw and heat generation, at least in stress testing. Last, the Voltage the board reports in software is way lower than what my multimeter shows when I probe the big SMD output caps of the VRM. Unless I’m doing it wrong and need to check the voltage somewhere else, my voltage readings lead my to set the SoC LLC to low and the Vcore LLC to low or medium. The voltage readings HWInfo showed would have led me to push the LLC settings much higher.
