I actually leave my bike uncovered in my town as rented flat - it’s next to a pub and a busy bus stop. It has obvious multiple heavy duty security on it, and hidden devices. But the benefit of uncovered is every local knows me - all the shops, pubs, and I’ve even befriended the homeless who all watch it for me. I went out one evening to tinker with something on it and a drunk mob immediately came out of the pub to challenge me as I’d a hood up 😂. So befriend your neighbours and watch their back, don’t be antisocial, be courteous and it’ll pay dividends! If I move I’ll buy a cover for sure.

100% agree. I have been looking for something that is a good enough to deter the casual toerags when I stop for a brew without having to wear a hole in my pannier or risk carrying something pointy and hard on my body. Something i can attach to the bike until needed. Gone are the days when I used to wrap a lock in waterproof overtrousers then stuff it under my seat. These days you would struggle to get a pack of rizlas under the seat.

Agreed, it might be worth checking out a large (pedal) bike shop, they have a lot of clamps etc designed for or sold with locks, though whether they're strong enough for motorcycle use is up to you to decide. In the meantime at least use something like a disc lock.

The quality of the videos you make is completely unparalleled - comprehensive, well researched, information dense and very clearly communicated. If you don't already have a personal channel, and Bennett's don't have contract stipulations against it, I would highly encourage you to consider the possibility. You could talk about things more informally or from an angle that doesn't make sense here, make some longer form videos (you talk to an incredible number of interesting people, I'd be very interested in seeing podcasts or entire interviews) or cover things you've interested in which are only peripherally connected to motorcycles (or totally unrelated!). I think a podcast would even work well here, revzilla have shown the possibilities and I enjoy their work, but it would be great to get something from a different perspective.

Great vid, really helpful. My bike lives outside on the driveway as I don't have an alternative option currently so videos like this are very useful. The layered approach is the way to go seemingly. I've got 8 security devices on it, two of which are alarmed, & the others include a heavy duty chain, ground amchor & one of the grinder resistant D-locks you recommended. It's also covered & on CCTV. I used to have sleepless nights about it but it's obviously insured & I can't do much more than I have so I don't worry about it anymore. It changes nothing & can really ruin the pleasure of having a bike if you think too much about it.

Love the in-depth video and length, and the fact you have even more details on individual videos is amazing. I think motorcycle brands need to fix the bear basic steering locks for something more suitable, and harder to brake apart, like an alt key to lock the bike up via an underneath lock location.

Great video and hopefully it reaches the target audience! From experience the MET are not interested in air tags or basic consumer tracking. But did express interest in approved and recognised tracking systems. Carrying a lightweight chain and finding something to lock the bike to is pretty difficult especially especially in the busy cities. I've opted for a lightweight packable cover, dlock, alarm disc lock and rely on the movement detection text alerts.

@4:47 I could immediately tell that was filmed in Dublin. It’s a huge issue now in Ireland especially after one police officer is under investigation for manslaughter after a chase on the motorway where the thieves went riding against traffic then crashed and died. So Garda was instructed not to follow if thieves were able to start the bike and ride it without a helmet. My bike got damaged after someone tried to steal it from the underground parking, the ignition switch, steering lock and immobiliser ring were destroyed but they gave up (not sure why). The mechanic who fixed the bike afterwards advised me to not use the steering lock anymore because next time at least I avoid getting the handlebar and the frame getting damaged again. I have two locks and fitted an alarm 🤞

R1200GSA: stolen from a garage and found back by the Rotterdam Police within 1,5 hours thanks to MoniMoto. Disk brake was cut to steal it. Changes since then: Abus alarm disk lock on left side, RoadLok on right side and a thick chain at the rear attached to a heavy object. Sadly it takes now 5 minutes to get the bike out, as also a scooter is parked in front of the GSA.

John, you’re a bloody legend for these videos. I mean that, you’re really doing great work. My Abus disc lock is very bright yellow, perfect. Even has a little LED in the key which is brilliant. The Hiplock D1000 is black which is a bit, well, silly. I want to see the lock and I want the thieves to see it too and move on. I will say that the hiplock key doesn’t take up as much space on the key ring. No free lunch I guess.

Some nice tips. I've got a regular disc lock (with a good size pin) that I use. Bike theft isn't a big thing here and I only really lock it up with that disc lock when I'm far away from the bike for a longer period. I just have it on regular steer lock. Granted there aren't many a times it's needed. I'm either riding it, having a quick stop or it's being stored in my garage or behind a locked fence. I don't commute as it's a pure hobby. Ride safe!

Work it out Robert!!! THINK ! Do what you have to and can do. What is your budget? How far do you want to go??? How much security do YOU want? I suggest lock up your bike with a QUALITY lock n chain ($$$$$$$), chained to SOMETHING. (So he/they cannot carry/lift your bike away) (This QUALITY lock n chain WILL last you for the rest of your life) This way the thief MUST cut your chain or lock (and make NOISE) to access your steering locked bike. (Rear and Front lock n chain perhaps??) For me, this will be the BARE MINIMUM. The BARE MINIMUM. If possible, chain your bike to a Fixed point, to another bike, garage frame, trailer, tow bar, or whatever, etc, etc, etc. All the very best. Regards.

Thanks for the comment TPV! I did get a decent chain and lock (KOHLBURG 13 chain and lock) that is front-wheel attached to a bollard and the base of my water heater in the garage. Let's see them move that bad-boy! Plus, I am using a Hiplock DX1000 in the rear wheel. I beefed up the man-door going into my garage, plus I have motion detectors in the garage too. It may be overkill at this point, but I sleep better at night knowing I won't be in that percentage of bike thefts. Next on Amazon: an NRA sticker on the outside of the garage man door... Soon Mul-T-Lock and I will be coming up with a material that can stop grinders no matter what. It will be like trying to cut metal with a paper knife. The primary target is high security doors, then it's going to take more time and engineering to implement it on portable security.

Great video as always John, definitely gave me some ideas. I always layer up my security, 3 chains with padlocks, linked together with a massive Abus U-lock, front & rear and ground anchors. Still had some failed attempts at theft from my own property. Pisses me off that insurance companies don't recognise Monimoto

That’s an example of somebody who knows how to picklock, but they only have KZbin skills not gonna be able to open that lock with that special tool. You will most definitely need the actual key or a special key that’s designed to open locks with schematics design like that be honest that’s actual good luck right there I like that myself, I like that that sits right on the desk yes perfect perfect where you want them and just put it inside their van

Have a look at the written reviews as of course I cut the body of the lock too. And yes, the Hiploks, Liteloks and Abus use the same angle-grinder-resustant materials in the bodies as in their shackles.
