Hey Bob, sorry for the late reply to your comment. Regarding your request for suggestions on measuring switch force -- I also use a kitchen scale, but I hold a screwdriver by the tip off to the side, and push on the plunger with the handle. If that's confusing I can upload a video or picture to show what I mean. I can get consistent readings (+/-1g on switch actuation) doing that. I'm sure by this point you have a better tool but I thought I would mention it in case it's helpful!

You can't measure the latency of a switch like that (especially without some sort of external hardware to press the switch). That latency measurement in fortnite is telling the latency between your mouse input reading (which measures at the USB polling rate, AFTER your mouse already reads the switch as closed in its firmware) and the in-game loop, and is likely to vary with your FPS and/or OS stuff. Your mouse switch has literally zero influence on this measured latency.
@kirya312 Жыл бұрын
Yeaah, exactly, there is no way any program can measure the latency between when the guy clicked the mouse button and when the click registered. But I got what I wanted from this video: they are mostly the same, no need to sweat about it too much.
@kirya312 Жыл бұрын
And can you even measure switch latency at all without using external hardware? If you don't have an exact timing for when the switch was pressed, you can't calculate the latency.
@dullrazor4423 жыл бұрын
Great vid! I think one thing that was omitted was the “feel” of the switch though- the rebound force of the switch can make them feel different despite similar readings. I find the reds to snap back with a bit more force which I find unpleasant, and I don’t feel that with the 8.0. The 8.0 feels a bit softer and I prefer them for it.
@Beardedbob3 жыл бұрын
True, hard to show but I do like the 8.0 or 4.0, these would be my pick. between then I can't honestly decide. I had hoping something from these tests would have decided for me between them it it hasn't, they both seem perfecto.

My years of experience with microswitches allow me to say the following - the multimillion-dollar life stated by the manufacturers is marketing. This life can be achieved only under ideal conditions, when the micro switch is pressed by a special robot with a certain force at an angle of 90 degrees. In a gaming mouse these conditions are unrealistic. The mouse body always has different pressing angles, each person presses the micro switch differently, with different effort. According to my personal subjective feelings, 60-70 per cent of clicks and its perception depends on the mouse body. Therefore, it is necessary to choose micro-switches individually for each mouse and for each concrete element (main buttons, side buttons, the button under the wheel). It is impossible to advise one model for all mice at once. Some of them might fit, and the rest - not. If you are going to do an audio comparison with other micro-switches - you should always do it on one mouse, because the internal acoustic enclosure of every other mouse will be different. Using microswitch force measurement through the mouse housing is wrong. Every mouse has a different design. Different housing, different button sizes, different pressure angles, and different micro-switch settings on the mouse board. There are dozens of little things like that. Each of them can make its own impact on the perception of the click. As for the micro switch jam - it depends more on the mouse motherboard settings, firmware, and chatter filter than on the micro switches themselves. A few important principles when selecting micro switches: If you want to find the perfect micro-switch for you buy several models and try them on your mouse. The ones you like are worth soldering. My opinion - it's better to choose micro-switches only by the physical feel and sound. Take what you like, based on the service life of 10 million or more clicks.

It's all about the current being switches by the switches. Many mouse manufacturers operate the switches with something like 3...50µA. If you take a look at the Omron data sheet, you will see that some switches need around 1...5mA to operate reliable and to reach the manufacturers stated switch cycles. The 1...5mA is required to keep the contacts clean. It's not Omron who's at fault. It's mouse manufacturers not understanding data sheets and not understanding how switches operate. A lot of mouses can be repaired by increasing the current trough the switches.

@ergohack2 жыл бұрын
5:11 Not sure if you actually just took an average of your decibel readings or just glossed over this bit, but I thought I'd point out that you shouldn't take an average with a logarithmic scale like that. Decibels represent actual acoustic power as exponents of 10, multiplied by 10. To get a proper average reading in decibels, you need to take each reading, divide it by 10, raise 10 to that number, then do your average, take the logarithm base 10 of that average, and then finally multiply the result by 10.

Using a scale works "fine" as long as you isolate the switch. It's not a precision measuring device in this context, but it certainly gets the job done. It's what I used in lieu of better tools early on. It's just cumbersome to get the setup right, but I was able to measure 0.2n switches easily, and accurately enough for my needs. The problem you were facing was one of inconsistency in applying pressure. That being said, I definitely don't *recommend* using a scale, even with a good setup.

Thank you for this test. My mouse switches started failing, so I ordered new ones and just finished soldering them (which was a new experience for me). Went with Kailh GM8.0 and I like how they feel and sound more than original Omron D2FCs. Between transparent (8.0) and reds (4.0) I like 8.0s force curve both up and down more. Reds are a bit jumpy on way up for me, but if you like how Omrons feel and sound, you go with reds, they are just fine. Also, when you measure latency - you measure mostly how a combination of a switch and debounce logic of mouse controller work together. In order to measure the switch - you need an oscilloscope to check how long physical bouncing lasts when you press the switch.

No sense in measuring the height of the body, they are in fact the same and you're only seeing a difference in manufacturing tolerance, which actually looks like a pretty low variation of 0.04mm. When I worked as a machinist getting something within 0.03mm is considered "extremely" precise. Of course that's relative to the scale you're working at, these are small parts; but they're only plastic, so I'm certain they're all designed to the exact same spec after seeing those numbers.

All those failing mouse switches are caused by mouse manufacturers saving 1 cent on resistors. Al those switches require something like 1...5mA to switch properly. Steelseries, Logitech, Corsair,... and many others switch around 3...50µA. No wonder the switches start to act erratic. The switches will work when new. But after a short time they will all fail. You can replace the switches but you need to increase the current in the switches in order to reach the manufacturers performance and life time.

does anyone know a decent set of silent mouse switches? or quieter than this? i was thinking of purchasing a cheap mouse with quiet switches and removing those. what do y'all think?
@ctrlaltdebug2 ай бұрын
You could always modify them. I popped open my factory switch to fix double clicking by bending the copper spring - it's easier than soldering. As a result I inadvertently reduced both the click force and made the switch much quieter.

Do any of these switches feel and sound (loudness wise) similar to the poor quality Omron switches Logitech use in their G502? I need a replacement there.

Even on the same serial number not all switches are made equal, that's what I learned from my switch swap mods. The 4.0 feel harder to press compared to the 8.0 but you can only tell this when they are on the board and in-game.
@Beardedbob3 жыл бұрын
Sure are... Each mouse is different. Each switch has some tolerance differences. The button on the mouse and how they are setup makes a difference to another different shape mouse.
@georgepierre3594 Жыл бұрын
the 4.0s on my asus tuf mouse are easy to press as omrons, i think it depends on the shell or if their binned or not.

Is it worth to change model O's omrons to kailh 8.0? I'm thinking about this upgrade, since I've had mice with omron switches start to double click rather quickly.
@Beardedbob3 жыл бұрын
The Omrons in the Model do feel decent due to the button design but they are known to fail with the dreaded double click issue. check the debounce setting in the software as the lower u go the more you can run into double click issues. If that doesn't fix it then replacing the switch is the only option or RMA.
@filipbedri18683 жыл бұрын
@@Beardedbob Thanks for the answer, so far I have to set my debounce time to 12ms or else it double clicks, I don't really want to rma it. So I feel like the best bet is to change the switches.
