Working as a low voltage tech I was initially really excited for the SOG baton with the scissors and pen to complement my leatherman wave. Having a writing utensil always handy and scissors for cutting Velcro and zip ties sounded great (didn't expect it to handle cables or even wire stripping). Unfortunately the steel was terrible quality and deformed to the point of blade meshing after cutting the first 7" zip tie. The pen was really uncomfortable for anything over 5 mins writing. Cool idea and design, poor execution and quality.

The SOG powerlock is the best pliers multitool. Fanboys love Leatherman and Gerber but I've used loads of different multitools in over 30 years in various technical professions, sports and hobbies, and the SOG Powerlock is definitely the best. It's more versatile, more customisable, more maintainable than Leatherman tools or Gerber tools. Most Leatherman tools rely on a pair of springs for the pliers to work but the SOG design doesn't have that vulnerability and has compound leverage. The only thing I don't like about the SOG tool is it's no longer US made, it's just a far better design than the Leatherman type, though I do agree that Leatherman just edges it in terms of fit and finish.

I have one and it really is everything I need for my job. Pliers, screw driver and knife. But I didn't get the cx and I broke the tip off my blade after couple of months. I have purchased 4-5 or these multi-tools, and can say that IMO, the most durable is the Gerber. While Leatherman now has a replaceable cutter insert, the Gerber has a triangular carbide insert, giving you three cutting surfaces before having to replace it. I've seen the SOG knives, but have a large number of knives/tools presently, so unless there was a feature I absolutely had to have, I'd be able to make do with what I have. Love my Victorinox Swiss Champ for packing the most features into a multi-tool, but really only a few of the tools are usable for anything that requires a bit of torque.

Gerber's MP600 Blade-less model is better than the Leatherman Rebar for travel. The former comes with a detachable Rem-grit saw. No aggressive saw teeth (unlike the Rebar). If a TSA agent wants to confiscate your nice-looking Leatherman by using the saw as an excuse, you have no choice. Most folks, especially international travelers won't sacrifice their plane ride home to hold onto their multi-tool. If that corrupt nonsense happens while you're traveling with the Gerber, you just detach the saw, hand *that* to him, and walk on through to your plane. Get to your destination, get to hardware store, buy a new Rem-grit saw for a few bucks, attach it to your Gerber. Done!

The Victorinox hands down always delivers and punches well above it’s weight. Leatherman and Gerber just seem to consistently have problems with quality control. The saws across the Leatherman range are different across their models, sadly consistently inconsistent. The Juice 2 was a decent mutli-tool, it’s now discontinued 😕

Actually what I have read says the Leatherman tools have the least quality control problems. I have them Leatherman Wave Plus and it is an extremely well made multitool. That what it is the most popular multitool ever sold.

@@m005kennedy I’d bought a couple of Amazon, the Wingman and Sidekick. Sadly both were sent back due to play in the main blade and the pliers also being quite loose. I don’t know if it was because they were made in China. I’m not against Chinese made products, but those experiences meant I wouldn’t buy a large LM multi-tool (I’m in the UK btw). I went to the US for holidays, got a cuz that lives in Las Vegas and we went to Walmart. I picked up the Micra and Squirt, also got the Gerber Dime. Granted they’re smaller multi-tools, but they were well made in comparison to their bigger counterparts, I suspect it was due to them being made in the USA. I find the scissors on those tools inferior to V-Nox SAK. Just wish those companies would get it right.

@@willienelsongonzalez4609 I thought Leatherman was all USA made? There is no play in my Wave Plus, but I have heard others mention blade play.

@@m005kennedy Over this way it seems to be China, unless you’re in the USA.

@@willienelsongonzalez4609 yes, I’m in the USA. I have a nice SAK but I misplaced it. I have had any problems with name brand multitool I have bought. I have a smaller Gerber.

I’ve had Leatherman’s in one form or another since 1986. Got the first one when I was one year old. 😉

I actually have a craftsman multitool. I misplaced it after a cross country trip. Missed it so much. Thought it was gone forever. Found it a year later. Happy again. Never owned any other so I can't compare it to your group but I like my Craftsman.

Interesting, even very useful. Personally, had orig Leatherman yrs ago, replaced w/a Gerber. came across an orig Leatherman. For me, most useful Has to have an awl or drill, knife, can opener, file/rasp, screwdrivers, pliers. Preferred the Gerber for how fit in hand, but, Leatherman has what was wanted. Guess we all have our prefs.

Picking a multitool for the day is truly a case of matching the talent to the job. Most times a Victorinox, Explorer more than covers my needs, other times a Leatherman is my go to choice.

Still using my Leatherman Core. I had the Blast but the lock broke. Sent it back to Leatherman and they replaced it with a standard Wave. I also have a Skeletool CX and a Micra. My first multitool was a Gerber 400 series. Thank You for the comprehensive review!! An overview of the warranties would have been nice though.

I work in the Trades and have tried and looked for a Multi-tool that is robust, functional, and worth the price. The only one that meets my expectations is the Toolbox multi-tool By Vise-Grip. It's a small version of the Curved Large Jaw Capacity Locking Pliers The Handel has two knives, and Philips, and a standard screwdriver. You can use any standard hexagonal driver in the screwdriver socket. All I need and was only $15-$20 bucks A professional-grade tool. I use it frequently.
@kalinagoedge27772 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. It's a great tool. Shrade made it in cooperation with Vise-Grip. Now Irwin makes it, a bit improved even.

I gotta admit: I'm a Gerber Baby.... The "Slick Slide" plyer setup has saved more than just my bacon when one hand was quite occupied.... .....Also!!! I made it a Habit to say out loud and quite publicly, "Go Go Gadget [tool being used]!" i.e. "Go Go Gadget Needle Nose Plyers!" or... If you find yourself in a pinch: "Go Go Gadget Surprise Castration!"
