I know it's not a romhack, but the NES/Famicom "demake" of Pac-Man Championship Edition that came out in 2020 as part of Namco Museum is the best version of Pac-Man CE and an impressive technical feat. It actually runs on NES hardware and the music is phenomenal. I think everyone that enjoys arcade/retro/score attack games should try it at least once.

Castlevania: Holy Relics from the last video is a gem, one of the best full romhacks I have played. Heavily recommend Zelda 2: Amida's Curse of you haven't looked into it. I couldn't believe how authentic and great it felt playing that. It's so good that I no longer hunger for another Zelda 2 style game. Nintendo couldn't've topped it themselves. Random battles eliminated in favor of using that memory for new dungeon layouts.
@willmistretta2 жыл бұрын
Seconding this. They really explored the limits of the Zelda 2 engine to make something with more of a focus on exploration and puzzles over boosted combat difficulty. It's totally unique among Z2 hacks.

@@OzymandiasWasRight you will not regret it. One of the most enjoyable experiences I had with a ROM hacking years. I think there's a case to be made that if we're evaluating ROM hacks for feeling like enhanced original games (without going overboard), this one is one of the best.

@@geraq0 Just finished it over the weekend! It's short if you don't want to commit weeks to a single RPG, and like you said, it isn't grind heavy at all. One downside is that I recommend an item or spell guide for information on what they do. I was a bit too afraid to pull the trigger on spells other than the obviously named ones and played through the whole thing without using any attack magic.
@geraq02 жыл бұрын
@@OmniMirror awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, it's too bad magic spells are nondescript and that there isn't any in-game help about them, also I'd recommend a guide for a confusing maze-like dungeon near the end of the game. Despite that I'd say the game is really good, there is a surprising amount of plot and dialogue and the gameplay is just plain old fun, I hope it gets enough attention one day in order to get an unofficial sequel or something.

I played Mother 25th Anniversary all the way through despite never playing a prior Earthbound game. I can easily call it the best NES RPG of all time. The game was balanced properly, never felt too easy or too hard, and most importantly, it was fun to play all the way through. Highly recommended and easily worth your time.
@Schwarzorn2 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend *MOTHER Restored* instead, tho, since it actually looks like a Mother game still. It keeps things authentic. Lots of work was put into changing "Earth Bound" back into "Mother", but in English obviously. And it uses the same good retranslation that the 25th Anniversary Edition made use of. And if you want it to be easier, there are additional patches for things lile double experience points. Game Genie codes too. And there are two options with the patch: one for the original names used in the Japanese version, and one that changes them to make it consist with the official translation of Mother 2 / EarthBound.

Probably one of the best rom hacks I have ever seen was for Legend of Zelda, called Legend of Link. They took the original Zelda game and mashed in stuff from Link to the Past and Link's Awakening. They use sprites from LA, and even added items from LttP and LA such as the Hookshot, Pegasus Boots, Roc's Feather, and others. The overworld is a recreation of the LA overworld, but mirrored. It also has some decent remixes of the original music with some 8bit versions of later music. The only downsides to the romhack is the dungeons are the original layouts and the second quest was removed to make room for all the new content, and the filesize makes it unusable on the Powerpak (not sure about Everdrive), so playing on original hardware isn't really feasible due to it being 2MB (again haven't tried Everdrive so not sure if it can handle 2MB or not). It has a bit of a story to it, so I won't spoil that. But there is a new boss fight at the end of the game that is pretty epic.

I got a bit of a surprise when you've shown Rockman no Constancy. "Refined over the years to include a hard mode" is an understatement, because when I played it a few years back, it didn't have the redrawn Rockman sprite! And interestingly, at that point it already had the hard mode in! Should probably give it another go, as it seems that more things have been added since then.

*Mother: 25th Anniversary Edition* is a NIGHTMARE. The enemies are now in several different, conflicting art styles, and barely resemble the clay models they were meant to be based on. Plus other less-severe problems. The more recent patch, *MOTHER Restored,* is the FAR better option. And in fact, it gives you _two_ options: one for Itoi's original names for things and people and places, and one to match with the official translation of Mother 2 (EarthBound), and the fan translation of Mother 3. And if you want to add other changes, there are many more patches to add on top of that one.

For me, Zelda 2 Redux is like the definitive way to play that game. It adds quality of life features like having you respawn at the beginning of a dungeon upon getting a game over, along with rebalancing the difficulty, though honestly I couldn't tell much of a difference, the game seemed to be about as hard as I remembered it being the last time I played the vanilla game, except how bubbles have way less health in Redux The game putting you at the very beginning and forcing you to take a walk of shame after every single game over is probably the biggest drag in the entire game and having it patched (even if only in dungeons) makes such a huge difference with how enjoyable the game is.

5:54-6:01 Yep. It also doesn't have the "Automatic Win," so players waste a lot of time fighting weak enemies just to earn very litte EXP. The unpredictability of the enemy encounter rate drives me nuts. They either take forever to appear, or they show up every 3 to 5 seconds. I also noticed that the game softlocks players if they miss one of the "Eight Melodies." I recentky had to restart Earthbound Beginnings because I didn't realize I had to keep the Canary Chick from the Podunk Pet Store and go to the wildlife refuge to return the bird to its mom to unlock the second melody. The game never explains any of that.
