How about some pipe insulation to make a bumper
@BIGALTX3 ай бұрын
That would probably work! Thanks for the tip.

Had one of these installed for 1 1/2 years. None of my chickens use them. Tried putting some straw in and some fake eggs and nothing. Getting ready to take it out and go back to what I had before.
@BIGALTX8 ай бұрын
Wow… That’s unusual. I’ve heard some people say they had trouble at first, but usually the chickens learn to use it. I’ve never had a problem with it.

Some reason my chickens don’t like it 2 out of 15 chickens use it. Had some homemade ones before and they all used them. Now they lay on the floor

Well... Then try this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZ3Qgpdsf7-KsNE What I show in this video broke mine from laying on the ground. When they stopped, I removed the wire from the pen... so far still not laying on the ground I _might_ see one on the ground every month or so...

I can’t get mine to lay in it I put a little bit to hang in it like they’re all nuts box had and I even taped up the flaps but they want to I’ll lay on the shelf in their coop it’s frustrating because it was expensive and they all just want to use the shelf
@BIGALTX5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what "shelf' you're talking about, but if it is a shelf that was there previously... Take down the shelf...

What is your feed formulation to attain maximum production?
@BIGALTX2 жыл бұрын
No real formulation. I just give them a 16% Lay Pellet free choice all day. Then at night, I give them a little scratch... not too much or it will lessen their egg production.

Will the eggs freeze during the winter in the best nest box?

Yes, they are not protected from cold temps. I don't see any way to insulate them and still give the chickens access.

Little bit of hey like they’re old Nest box** any tips on how to get them to use the nest box instead of the shelf ?
@BIGALTX5 жыл бұрын
Originally, I put some hay and pine shavings in there, like was in their old nest box. It worked for me, but not immediately. If you're still having problems, contact Best Nest Box and ask them for suggestions...
@thaerss162 ай бұрын
How high did u install it?
@BIGALTX2 ай бұрын
It’s probably about 2 feet high. But, I had their ladder right next to it (that they used to get to their roost). Most chickens don’t have any problem, jumping 2 feet high. You could always install it lower than that though. Your choice.

I’m new to raising backyard chickens, all I know is what’s on the internet. Isn’t poop on the eggs mean they have worms? And a drop of vinegar in their water every couple of months should fix that? Again I very new to this so correct me if I’m wrong.
@BIGALTX6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, but sometimes true. I think it takes a lot more vinegar in the water than a 'drop'. I've heard something like a 1/2 cup in a gallon (or something like that)... but not sure.
@seriouslynow222 жыл бұрын
I add a small amount of Apple Cider Vinegar to my chicken's water.
@viperfukgoogplus3865 жыл бұрын
Looks like a nice box, but i would think the mesh screen and extra airflow would make eggs freeze and crack in the winters. A normal nestbox has some bedding to insulate the egg and delay freezing. Do you have cold winters?
@BIGALTX5 жыл бұрын
Not like up north. I'm in E TX
@mycrazyfamilyid2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if putting a couple hay bales under it would insulate it enough.

Can you plant and grow black berries in part sun part shade and will they produce a good amount of berries? I like your nest box, going to look into one.

Sure... sometimes there is a little learning curve, but they like the privacy of the box and start using it on their own

Put some shavings (or hay or whatever you had in your old boxes) in it. If that doesnt work, set the Best Nest box on the ground where the hens are laying. Pull back the red curtains and tape them up so they can see and go in without being scared, Worked for me. If all else fails, call Best Nest Box... they are glad to help

My chickens hate it. Most won’t lay in it. They will lay on the ground. And the broody hens still will sit in there with not one single egg. Do yourself a favor and build wood roll out boxes yourself. And save a chunk of money by not buying these metal ones. I have 9 hens in the coop and the 3 slot metal box that haven’t been laid in over 2 years. They much rather a dark colored bucket. Not white. A black planter bucket is one of there favorites. These look cool but just not what my hens like.

Well... mine took a few days to learn to use it, but I absolutely love mine All the eggs are so clean I only have one egg on the ground every week or 2
