Another thing you can do to get chickens to not eat their eggs is to take an egg and blow out the yolk and refill with mustard. Chickens don’t like mustard, and after breaking the gf shell will taste the mustard. Instantly stops eating their eggs.

I have that very same hen gear nesting box mounted for rear/outside collection. There is a latching system that perfectly secures the push in panel from predators gaining entry.

Just in case you are interested, they make timers that you can put on your roosting bars. You install them and set the timer for the desired time (ex. Just after sunrise), and it will flip down . Yu just need to put them back up in the evening when they are done laying their eggs. Doing this helps keep the chickens from soiling in the boxes.

They sent me a wooden egg key chain I think, is that to put into the nest to give the chicken the idea to go into it and lay or am I just dumb and it's just a key chain and the chickens will do it all on their own?

The hole for the back roll egg feature doesn't/shouldn't be as large as the whole back of the box. It only needs to be large enough for the egg collector to fit through.

I just got done watching a review that said his chickens don't like it. How did you get your gals to use it--start it near to ground and gradually raise it? So glad to see it works for you--I thought I'd made a horrible mistake and been scammed by the inventors. Hope not! And hope the raccoons can't access it. No way to secure my barn with horses and goats in adjacent stalls! Thank you-- you give me hope!!

I have the large version of this box. I agree it is good quality, but the design is not well as an outside box. Per instructions, the "outside" egg access is by cutting a long rectangular opening for the collection tray only. The box itself stays inside the coop. I'm not a fan of that, since it requires me going inside the coop to clean the boxes when needed.

I think that the latches can be tightened down enough that they would not be strong enough to turn them.

This is a really great review and I love that you are honest. I think things that would bother be about this is that I'd love the roosting bar to be able to be pushed all the way back until it reaches the face of the nesting boxes to guarantee my nerdy birdies won't try to sleep in them. LOL! The egg door also looks pretty flimsy to me. I wonder if they've improved upon their design since you made this video, also. I have a quick question if you are able to answer. (I know this is an older video but it is definitely still legitimate.) Do you know what they mean on their site where it says "up to # hens"? For example, the one you show here (which is more than the Economy one and concerns me because I don't know why) states "up to 20 hens". Does that mean that one of those will be able to handle that many birds? I mean, I know that chickens will absolutely stack up in one space if necessary but I have a hard time believing that if a hen needs to lay, she'll wait an indeterminate amount of time to lay in the box and will go lay elsewhere. Which is one of the biggest reasons I'm looking for something like this. My nerds are laying anywhere and everywhere and a lot of eggs get wasted because I don't know where I'll find them next. I want them to be able to go into the coop, into a decent box, lay their eggs, and be done.

Thank you. They never roost on that bar. It is only for them to get grip as they go inside. The egg door is steel and not flimsy at all. I think this model will accommodate 3 hens comfortably at the same time. This nesting box has worked flawlessly for me sans the egg door sticking (which is improved in the newer laser cut version).

I have a couple of questions that weren't addressed..how does all the metal parts work in high heat or cold, snowy environments? Seems to me, that the metal could get hot and uncomfortable...or cause frostbite in cold weather???? Second, the material in the privacy screens and the egg catching layer....how does that soft, rubbery material hold up in environmental changes in temperature? Does it last long or does it get stiff and crack?

It’s fine in the heat and cold. Chickens don’t mind it and go in all year. Privacy screens are tough. They have not worn at all. Still very flexible

Hello, how's it held up over the years? We have some Homestead Essentials roll out nest boxes that were awesome for the first few months, but have deteriorated quite quickly where the sheet metal holds the trays in. Does your hen gear still seem sturdy and fully functional? TIA

It is still solid as a rock. Every bolt has stayed in place and has not loosened. The sheet metal is thick and has not cracked or ripped through at any connections.

Beginners; These units are often expensive. Be sure you know where the nest box will be placed as related to how you will access it. Also understand how easy it is to clean. I got a high end unit, NIGHTMARE to clean !!! When I called the Co. They agreed and said the newer model easier. I was out $85

Nice looking nesting box, but when I go to the company website it says their 72" nesting box can accommodate 75 hens. No where does it say how many can get in at one time. How many get in the size you selected?

Thanks. Mine works for all of my 16 chickens. Chickens don't all lay at the same time. I have only ever seen 2 at a time in there.....but they all lay in it (with the exception of the occasional one on the floor).

I found the instruction manual to be pretty much useless. The only means of contact is an email address on the back cover of the manual I wrote asking for clarification on assembly and received no reply. On the third day after my email I sent another email advising I was returning the box. Presto within an hour I got a text, phone call and email I replied to the text and the guy gave me a phone number. I got some assistance and assembled the hengear nesting box. I can say I will definitely not get another one

mine just showed up in the mail and i wanted to know how to put it together so i watched your video. the hardware that came with it should have gone in the trash as soon as i opened the package. great product but i would have gladly given them an extra 5 bucks and had them include nuts and bolts that were not machined by a 3-year-old (awful quality & hard to work with). besides the struggle with the hardware the only other thing i noticed was some of the holes were punched into the metal slightly smaller than they should have been. would i buy another box from them? YES, i would as overall these boxed are made out of good thick material and should last decades provided, they are installed inside a building where rain cannot get to them.

Personally I found that top corner bolt & nut to be MOST frustrating part of building this nest box. Serious flaw in design. (Regular ikea builder here)

I have an electric fence around the coop. Nothing gets in. It is also inside the coop structure. Heat has not effected it.

If it is inside your coop, then you shouldn't have to worry about the raccoons.

Hmmm ...I've got mine rear mounted, so eggs will be outside coop, in barn that raccoons have been a problem--in fact rebuilding coop using hardware cloth. I've had 21 chickens in my garage for 3 weeks. Horrible mess. Raccoons got 4.

Have you ever heard of preserving fresh eggs, that HAVE to be washed, in the olden days they used MINERAL OIL. Also there is a bedding called Aubiose, there is only one place in America (leastwise back when I purchased it) up North somewhere, but its Hemp, very clean, does away with straw inn coops, detours all stink and flies and best of all YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE IT OUT BUT CLOSE TO TWO YEARS. JUST GIVE IT A TOSS, TURN IT OVER AND WA LA. I haven't used mine yet as my coop isn't complete yet to get my chickens. Also I'm lining mine with food grade plastic to keep the wood from getting poopy and stained. ok just passing on knowledge I've gained, tc

Oh man, that is a strange place for them to lay. Try taping the curtain up to the inside of the nest box and putting a little bedding inside on the mat. I would also get some fake ceramic eggs that they will peck and get discouraged with.

Call the SPCA, but this is what I did. I locked one chicken inside the box by placing her in, and raising the foot bar. Most of the other chickens came over and were watching her as she just lay inside. I slowly lowered the foot bar and walked away. Two other chickens were last seen trying to get inside? well im no chickenologist but from what i read the only way to stop the egg eater is to separate that chicken because studies show that chicken is being deprived of proper amount of food. bullied by others or not enough food to satisfy the egg eater. i did what they said and my one chicken stopped eating the eggs. don't know but it worked. i have found with over 10 chickens to make separate nesting boxes. and so far no issues

That is not our experience or what years long research has told us. Chickens peck eggs because of a calcium deficiency or boredom.

Group laying has never been a problem for me. If it is their favourite spot (or their only spot) they will cram on in there. They do not really care about egg ownership (eg in a non-rollaway nesting box), and a friend who has larger nests, has chickens that gather together eggs (broody or not). I interpret this as "saves me laying them", because they amass a number of eggs before they decide to hatch them.

You talked a lot, you explained a lot, but it wasn't a good presentation. Because you did not clearly show and explain the curling details of the parts. For example, are the pieces part of the right side or the left side? Which way are the edges of the pieces bent? Why is it bent? Where will the curves of the pieces be based on? It wasn't a very understandable definition because you couldn't show or explain details like these clearly. During the assembly stages, it was not shown where and how the parts should fit together. In short, because you hold the pieces in your hands and see every detail clearly. You thought we saw it the same way and explained it as if you were explaining it to people who know the subject. However, we have always seen nesting boxes assembled, this was the first time we saw them disassembled. That's why every detail had to be explained and shown to us in a completely understandable way. There was no success in this regard.
