I currently use both the RODE SmartLav+ and the RODE VideoMic Me (previous model) with my iPhone 7. Like Sean mentions if you want a mic that’s richer/deeper in sound and fantastic for podcast style narration go with the shotgun VideoMic Me (L). The SmartLav+ (definitely with extension cord) is what I use for my general talking-head style videos. Not as rich in sound but still solid for reducing most (but not all) echo.

When you’re using the SmartLav+, are you using filmic pro for the video..? The reason I ask is that I’m struggling with the SmartLav+ and the input volume in filmicpro in my iPhoneX. I have been using the videomic pro with filmic pro for a long time and have had no issues with it. The SmartLav+ just seems so quiet and I can’t seem to get it any louder.

I loved the mic conversation. I’ve used the Shure MV88 before and was pretty happy with it. For what I’m going to be doing these mics are a bit challenging as the acoustic guitar sometimes overpowers the vocals BUT you can’t always drag a studio out and about with you lol. I’m excited to try out a few of the other options you’ve discussed here. Thanks, you’re really helping me up my game.

This is a very helpful video. I have been filming my son for over a year now with my i-phone so I can keep a video log of his happenings as he grows up. The majority of his family is in England, and this is a way to keep him connected with them. Now, it is time to get a good microphone. I actually went with two Zoom H1 recorder's the new one and older one for recording audio. I found it more flexible for recording audio because I can use the Zoom H1's at longer distances away from the camera. I can use it as a shot gun microphone. The only challenge is that I have to sync the audio after the fact in FCP X which is really no big deal.

I too have - and love the sound of - a Shure MV88. I use it with an iPad mini 4, but when I’m outdoors and have the iPad in a Griffin Survivor case, I use either a CableJive dockStub (with a piece of duct tape to ensure the mic doesn’t fall off) or a dockXtender cable from the same company. Both have worked great for over a year now, tho’ you do have to keep an eye on the LED to make sure the mic stays connected. You must plug the mic into the stub or cable _before_ attaching to the I-device. On my Nokia 8 Android phone I use another solution: using FilmicPro, I attach a ZOOM H2n by USB mini to USB-C OTG cable, taking power from the phone. This gives you great quality stereo sound and even 4-channel or spatial sound. You can also use dead cat outdoors. You can also use the two devices separately and sync sound and vision in post.

Smart lav sounds great! Better than Rode micro. There is an adapter that would allow you to have two smart lavs for interviews. Add the dongle and you can use the lavs on DLSR. BUT two smart lavs connected to the adapter is still one audio input, so editing audio is tough. Especially if your second talker isn’t talking at the same level as you. Something to consider.

I've been using the Shure MV88 for recording my concerts and also for some vlogs. The mic sounds amazing and I love it. However, I was really annoyed to find out that you have to use it in airplane mode (so no livestreaming), because it grabs interference from cell connections or wifi! How you do think this mic would be for recording standup comedy sets? All rooms sound different and I’m looking to cut down on some of the echoey-ness of certain rooms. Will this help with that?
@Gmakamian
@Gmakamian 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarioTontiComedy the only way to cut down on echo, is to have the mic placed close to the source (in this case your mouth). If a room has echo, a mic cannot fix it. The room has to be treated, or your have to put the mic very close to you. The only mics that could somewhat help are shotgun mics, but don't expect wonders.

@31knick
@31knick 4 жыл бұрын
You have a error in your video regarding the TRS connection on professional microphones. The professional microphone that you are using with the trs adapter is not stereo but balanced audio. Ground, Hot and Neutral. You need the ground for phantom power on condenser microphones as they require voltage to operate. TRS connectors can be found in a wide range of applications such as stereo headphones but in this application you are taking balanced audio and converting it to the trs connector with the phone.

When using these Lightning plug in mics, you can't also have your phone charging, or can you? Are there any adaptors that will allow you to charge your phone at the same time you are using it to record? I need to use my phone to record a 2.5 hour choral rehearsal and sometimes an all day session @ 6hours and I doubt my battery would last that long. thanks for all the great info on microphones.

Can you use them on your phone as just a microphone and record video with a different phone? Or do you have to record the video when you use the microphone?

From personal experience the Smartlav+ from Rode is a great microphone, you get great audio quality using the Rode app with it, but you can also just plug it in and record directly as you video making it a lot easier to edit.

27% of the reviews on Amazon of the Rode VideoMic ME are 1 star. That seems like quite a lot of people not satisfied.

MV88 is the one I chose, it sounded the best of all to me plus seemed very IPhone XR friendly. Thanks for this review.
