So helpful! And timely - just starting :) I do have a question though. If I'm filming using my iphone in landscape mode, how do I maintian the right eye contact. It seems that I;m looking off at an angle even when I'm facing the screen directly (as the camera lens' are on the right or left of the screen). Thx!

Oddly enough, right next to the PoP mic on your amazon search was the maybesta wireless lavalier mic. At 29.99 that thing is amazing, theres a reason it has 4.4 stars across 2.5k reviews. And while that one is lightning, for the iphone, they do a USB C one, but also do a multi adapter version that works in all phones and on digital cameras. And for about $10 more, theres a version that has a built in recharge case Hands down the best mic on a budget. So I would argue that mic and decent lights over the Rode setup or the DJI (even though, of course, they are better sound) :)

I’m not even done watching the video yet and it’s already been so helpful that I had to pause and comment. This has to be the single, most helpful video I’ve ever watched for how to film content for beginners, especially because it’s specifically for using one’s smartphone, which even tho must of us are in this early stage, most videos for beginner content creation don’t focus on it. I’ve watched hundreds of videos at this point since I started a couple years ago, and if I had only watched this single video and none of the others, I would have all of the information I needed. Long story short, thank you.

Thank you for all you teach. I've purchased your Content Creator and 14 Day Filmmaker courses and LOOOOOVE them. I wanted to add one thing you might want to edit into this current video. You mentioned in here that you could stream your phone camera to your computer or iWatch but said there was nothing for Android phones. That may be true for most Androids, but Samsung has a perfect solution called Samsung Flow. I didn't know about it myself until your comments inspired me to go searching for a solution. I just installed it on my phone and computer and it works like a charm. It can be streamed with tablets too. Sadly, I haven't yet been able to configure my Samsung watch, but it's supposed to work there too. But once again, THANK YOU, for all your great content and inspiration. Keep up the great work!!!

I appreciated the great insights! Most were excellent. However, I didn't like the blurry edge of the subject against the background, that should have been sharper. The very first scene on the video, where you contast the footage of the $5K camera vs the iphone 14, shows exactly the difference am pointing out. The 5k camera had the sharp seperation between the subject and the background that I prefer, and that should be.

I have a question. I am not the most tech savvy person. But I need to create videos now for wk. I purchased my i phone 4 yrs ago. I’ve never really used it to make videos that I would post online. It doesn’t have all of the other camera settings the newer phones have. My iphone is an XS or (10) But I really don’t want to get a new phone, but I can if I need to but would prefer it is not my primary phone. I could buy a new i phone, and use it specifically to make KZbin videos, or I could buy a separate camera. I see all of these different kits that you can buy for beginners, but it doesn’t say if it’s compatible with my specific iPhone. And as new phone models are released , they change everything… the ports change they either disappear or they are different shape. But I don’t want to buy anything unless I know my current phone isn’t ideal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 🙏

Hello! As I understand it, the video was shot on an iPhone 13 or something like that. Maybe I'm wrong, but in my opinion the face looks quite flat. Is it possible to somehow set the lighting to create volume? How can you do this during the day, when the sun illuminates the entire room, and in the evening, when you use artificial light?

I shot this video in HDR and then edited in premiere pro which doesn't play nice with the HDR footage. In hindsight it would have improved a ton by NOT shooting in HDR so silly me for leaving that feature on. Additional time spend on lighting would also help

Thanks for the tips, Anthony! I just bought the Rode Smart Lav+ and the Zoom H1N as you suggested! Just a PSA for some people: you need to also buy a TRRS to TRS adapter to connect the Zoom H1N and the Rode Lav+✌

Great video. Is there a specific setting for the level of audio so as to match other good videos in terms of eq and overall level of sound. Ive often gone onto videos and struggled to hear someone talking over the audio in background. Also some videos without music and just commentary are very low level so just wondered if there is a specific level of dB that youtube recommends and where is the setting found... Would it be in an editor like Capcut or within youtube?

Valuable video. Thank you. Why is there a scream at the beginning of the settings section?? Disturbing.

This is one of the best videos I've seen on making better looking videos with your phone. Honestly, I'm not using any of the great tips you discussed here and yet I've still had people be really surprised to learn that I use my i-phone-and old one at that- to film all my content. In the 21'st century I just don't see the need for an expensive camera (for what I do, at least) to shoot great looking footage. I DO need to get a better handling on audio though, and the options you gave here were excellent. I'll be coming back to this video often man. I've saved it to make it easy to find. Thanks!

Add a question regarding audio. What if I'm doing an interview with someone? And I'm using my phone, and second question is, is an iPhone better than a Android like a pixel pro? Thank you for your video

If I buy the better mic you suggest, could I just use my smartphone and an adapter to usb-c to record the audio? I'll be using a DSLR for the camera so wondering if I can save on needing to buy the dedicated recorder? Thanks!

13:38. If you're on Android you can mirror to almost any smart watch excluding apple and any other computer, tablet or smart tv, excluding Apple. If you don't want to deal with wireless you could simply use USB-C to HDMI and hook up to any monitor or TV. Any feature apple has android has had for 3-5 years, apple just doesn't introduce it until they've found a way to monetize it.

As much as I love Android devices, not all have usb to HDMI out. I just suggest people verify that function is an option before trying to shoot something serious. I've seen people not prepare and then have this assumption bite them come shoot time. Know your gear folks!
