About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

Jean Stapleton never did anything without being paid. She said so on Donny and Marie's talk show.. She was asked to do the Edith voice, and refused unless they paid her. Lost all respect for her. She was a pride.

@carolmanning1333 You lost all respect for Jean Stapleton? Lol! How is that even possible? She was an actress and doing Edith was a job. Would you work for free? On the other side of the coin, why not do a sentence or two? It's not to be questioned. It's a matter of respect. Look at her credits online. Phenomenal actress as was her sister, Maureen.

@@Lieveheersbeestje1010 Archie was able to play against type in "In The HEat Of The Night" in the 80s. Edith was able to play against type in future roles as she was an accomplished theater actress. Meathead pretty much parlayed his success behind the camera as a big director. And Little Girl, well she became the big girl of TV/VCR repair and the starving kids.

Edith has got to be one of the most beloved TV characters of all time. I remember when she died and the world went into mourning. I saw Jean Stapleton in interviews afterward and she tried to play it down but people would just gush about Edith. Of course the character's thoughts and actions are based on the writing but Jean brought the character to life in a masterful and magical way. True artistry. I hope the younger generations and the future does not forget her, both the character and the actress.

There is no way to fully comprehend the brilliance of Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker!! She is simply without peer as a Television actress. Any time before or since!! A veritable parade of Television Actresses behind her, fighting for the second spot on the podium. This the funniest, most heart wrenching, tear jerking, collection of clips ever witnessed on the small screen. All because of this virtuoso that never failed to make us laugh. And most all, to make us cry. The scene where Louise Jefferson and Edith are saying goodbye could squeeze tears from a Granite Stone!! Surpassed only by the later scene where Edith hides her illness from Archie. That is the greatest scene in the history of this classic series. OR ANY OTHER. The greatest husband and wife team ever to appear on the Small or Big Screen. Is it any wonder that when Edith was written out of the show the Legendary Norman Lear nearly snapped. "She's just a Television Character," Stapleton told him. "Not to me she wasnt," Lear replied. Let's get this straight. JEAN STAPLETON DIDNT PLAY EDITH BUNKER. SHE WAS EDITH BUNKER. The greatest Television Actress of All Time. Now and forever.

BEST sitcom of the 70s. Norman Lear stoled my heart with this sitcom that I watch in these times STILL. All In The Family characters could NOT had been done better by any other actors. RIP Carroll O'Connor. RIP Jean Stapleton. I think Americans fell in love with the sitcom because it had heart in how it addressed serious issues that hit home. But loved Stapleton & O'Connor in other movies & series too. Sad about O'Connor's person life as he got older and what happened to his son and wife. Glad to see Rob Reiner still in the SHOW BIZ. And Thank You Sally Struthers and Jean Stapleton for helping women break through that male dominant barrier. Thankful for the 70s helping American society evolve regarding to women. I just wish America and the world would EVOLVE regarding animals as considered mere objects, harmed & killed.

Archie was the guy we loved to hate, but TWO episodes stand out. WHen he an Mike got locked in the freezer at the bar, and when Edith died. You saw the real humanity in him. I love that stuff, like when Frank Burns got to show HIS humanity and wit those precious few times. As someone who saw a girl I ADORED go off with someone else and marry them (My best friend and she and I are married NOW , so..) I tear up every time I see the scene Hot Lips leaves on her honeymoon . "Goodbye Margaret" . I also have a step Dad like Archie, completely ignorant of the world around him but convinced he knows everything, and then..when you least expected it a wonderful gesture.

Yes; that scene and the monologue he does with the slipper in the bedroom after Edith's death have to be his 2 top scenes. Well, maybe the anger he displays in the draft dodger episode too. In the monologue scene his display of grief and anguish is just so believable that you can't even tell he's acting. You know, I saw that when it first ran when I was in high school and I cried and I STILL tear up when I see it.

In the first season, this really was mostly the Archie Bunker Show rather than true ensemble acting. by season two Edith is a full fledged three dimensional character. Its impossible to separate O'Connors work in any given scene from Stapleton's or vice versa. So generous and comfortable are they in their scenes, each with the other, that they perform seamlessly as a single acting unit. They both move between humor and pathos so effortlessly.
