I adore this documentary. I am on the progressive side of the political spectrum, but I did not find myself agreeing or disagreeing with Buckley or Vidal, I was just extremely entertained by their wordplay and insults at each other. Even though this is a highly political film, I always try to put that aside while watching it, and just let myself get hypnotised by two masters of debating.

"Master, there's a few provisos, a few addendas... quid pro quos" The one thing Robin really dialed into was the fact Buckley often overused and misused Latin and French phrases to make himself seem smarter... That's why he (Buckley) hated people like Vidal and Chomsky, because they wanted to cut the BS, just say the damn point.

And the two of them SO handsome!! I'm going to call it what it is: if they looked like Gene Simmons or Steven Tyler, it simply wouldn't have had the same effect! ;)

MY RATING - 8 out of 10 Best of Enemies is a fascinating documentary film about a series of nationally televised debates in 1968 between two public intellectuals, the liberal Gore Vidal and the conservative William F. Buckley Jr. If that doesn't sound very interesting you couldn't be more wrong. This is a film about two men who absolutely hated each other. Two extremely clever men who fought each other live on television by debating with each that eventually led to personal insults being thrown at each other and it's mesmerising viewing. I have to admit I had never heard of these men before and that's probably because these debates happened a couple of months before I was born but I do know now and I feel much better off for it.

Although I can't say I'd subscribed in totality to either man's vision for America, Buckley has always struck me as the better debater. Vidal was witty but his style was just all over the place. And maybe I'm just picky but a truly brilliant rhetorician wouldn't need to rehearse his droll quips in front of a press conference or keep a transcript of them at the ready. Unfortunate temper loss aside, Buckley will always be the better man of this debate imo.

gloriacat Gore was quite the populist, actually. The only thing the two had in common was an intellectual background --- which, apparently, we will no longer tolerate in the USA's media figures. Who are our public intellectuals now? Neil DeGrasse Tyson? (Love him and his work, but he has too little company).

I know Buckley was Roman Catholic, so I am confused by him saying G-d. Is that acceptable speech for a Roman Catholic? I get the sense so since I think he repeats it in a calmer instance. Among more traditional Protestants, that is offensive and considered an act of using God's name in vain (a violation of one of the 10 commandments).
@battleburger
@battleburger 4 жыл бұрын
Thats because protestants aren't as rigorous in their study of scipture. The faithful meaning of commandment is to not presume to speak in the Lord's name. Its an innocent enough mistake in the same way people misunderstand killing and coveting.

It seems like they started what is Fox news and Co in the US. What I got from this doc is that my definition of fine intellectual is different from that of the mainstream. I thought the greatest intellectuals are those who would understand the facts in a very practical manner,not the one who is best at rhetoric or exploiting straw man fallacies

Largo Corto Considering that if no member of mainstream media said the quote I'm asking about you'd be guilty of a straw man, I'm really interested in knowing the answer to my original question.
@largocorto3188
@largocorto3188 8 жыл бұрын
Zuzu Superfly read my statement again and tell me where I said it was a quote. Please disprove me right now!I am so eager. I gave an opinion(I clearly wrote"I thought"). This opinion is based on ABC News having them discussed politics and the public reaction. Many people watched that show and that show has changed how politics is televised.(Hence me saying it started Fox News and Co). But somehow,you want a quote! Did I mention a quote? And you have the nerves to say that I am the one pulling out a straw man. If you want to debate someone,focus on what he says. But if your only wish is to win a debate,then you can pull out a straw man fallacy like the "quote argument" you are trying to forcefully insert in this debate. Is what I said incorrect? Prove me wrong. Generally, arguments that are questions are just straw man fallacies. You didn't even address a single point I talked about.You just asked a question.But unfortunately for you,Your question is irrelevant to my post b/c you I never even suggested there was a quote. Just make your counter argument. I don't have time for fishermen who lay their question to catch straw men
@zuzusuperfly8363
@zuzusuperfly8363 8 жыл бұрын
Largo Corto You wrote 25 lines assuming I cared for a direct quote, despite it being your words and clearly nobody else's. "What I got from this doc is that my definition of fine intellectual is different from that of the mainstream." Followed immediately by "I thought the greatest intellectuals are those who would understand the facts in a very practical manner,not the one who is best at rhetoric or exploiting straw man fallacies." Okay, who thought the latter? At this point you either demonstrate it belongs to the mainstream news or you just say, "oh I didn't mean anyone in particular thought that". It's your choice. Either commit to the position that you authored an absolutely ridiculous definition of "greatest intellectual" for absolutely no reason at all, or prove to me you didn't produce a straw man fallacy by showing me exactly who defined greatest intellectual that way. Don't waste my time with anything else.

Nazi's started off as National Socialists. Good intentions, democratically elected, then imposed a bunch of laws regulating people for the 'good of the nation'. Those that didn't agree were removed. The same thing is happening today, the same elite want power, and they are using everything including 'good intentions' to get there. Climate Change, Social issues, hell, they are even killing free speech under 'bullying'. Beware of the state.
