It was 'Five Easy Pieces' that did it for me. His first truly great performance from start to finish. Incredible intensity, the shift from anger to pathos to plain lost is remarkable. A lot of people sight Easy Rider as his break out film, and his performance in it was outstanding, but Five Easy Pieces a year later, wow. What an actor, what a performer, what a talent. Also, somehow Carnal Knowledge got forgotten here. Jack and Anne Margaret.

When my brother and I first saw Little Shop of Horrors, when it finally came on TV in about 1961 we were just rolling on the floor laughing about this scene (dentist scene) and we often repeated parts of it to each other whenever we had to go to the dentist. Little did we know "that weird guy" would become a mega star.

He actually conversed and provided reassurance with Dennis Hopper’s character, whereas everyone else ignored him and treated him like he was insignificant, whereas Peter Fonda was the opposite with all others.
