From Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the NBC series revolving around Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a New York City Police Department (NYPD) detective in Brooklyn's fictional 99th Precinct, who often comes into conflict with his commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher). The series also stars Terry Crews as Sargeant Terry Jeffords, Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago, Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz, Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti and Joe Lo Truglio as Charles Boyle.

No, they didn't break up. They just seperated, or just took some time apart. Besides, they did specify what caused the strain, and it wasn't racism, but how said racism affected Holt's mind, ruining his marriage. Also, if you saw 8x02, you'd see that they make up.

TLDR: Raymond Holt is a black man, but also a police officer. The police statistically discriminate against Black Americans which lead to a disproportionate amount of fatal encounters and that was pushed to the forward front of everyone's mind in 2020: an already difficult year of uncertainty and fear. Two important parts of Raymond's identities conflict with each other and Kevin has never been good at supporting Raymond in his pursuit to make the police better. Well...it seems that it was purposely vague because 2020-1 has a complicated time for us all. It's hard being anyone living through a pandemic and 2020 was a time where MOST people became disillusioned by the systems that uphold our law. Millions of people marched for BLM and against the police. As a black police officer, one can assume that it was an especially conflicting time for Captain Holt. His drive to become Commissioner was rooted in his steadfast belief in the police as an institution and how under his leadership could have made it better. He perservered through years of discrimination because of these beliefs. However, it became apparent that many people disagree and in many ways his two identites are at odds with each other. Not to mention, his decision to face these adversities clearly affected his relationship with Kevin. From when Kevin was introduced, he and Raymond had different views on the police and they were already at such a point that Kevin never wanted to discuss Raymond's 'worklife'. It's quite believable that Raymond's internal strife and Kevin's inability to properly support Raymond accumulated until they no longer felt they could be together.
