Thats why pawn shops always ask what the sellers asking price is. To see if you can be fooled. I mean dealing with a possible original and he doesn't even bother to take it out of the frame to examine it? You can clearly see press marks on it when the art expert took the picture out the frame

You know what? If a man that is clearly uneducated and maybe a little bigot walks into my shop with an Albrect Dürer describing it as a "Scary picture" and "A little sadistic and satanic" asking for 2000 €, I would give him exactly what he wants, without feeling bad at all. Rick was litterally too good telling him it was probably valuable and sending him home with 5000.

I dont blame rick for ripping the guy off. This isnt a care bear world, it is the sellers responsibility to do research and find out as much as possible about the value of their piece because its THIER piece. Rick could have taken the 2k and that would be that. This seller was lazy, did no research, didnt want to do an auction, etc. Completely the sellers fault for being lazy and i doubt someone like him needs the cash that bad if they just randomly had a print they didnt even like thats worth 50k plus. Imagine a different pawn shop. they would have low balled the seller to 1500 just for fun.

Albrecht Dürer (21 May 1471 - 6 April 1528) was a painter, printmaker, and theorist of the German Renaissance. Born in Nuremberg, Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was still in his twenties, due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was in communication with the major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and from 1512 he was patronized by emperor Maximilian I. His vast body of work includes engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints, altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercolours and books. The woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work. His well-known engravings include the Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation. His watercolours also mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium. Dürer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists, has secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance. This is reinforced by his theoretical treatises, which involve principles of mathematics, perspective, and ideal proportions.

It just paid off for him this time. I have seen some episodes where Rick got burned by taking a chance without consulting an expert.

I don't believe it was a "gamble." I believe he just took advantage of this seller and they added the "gamble" stuff after the fact. When a guy thinks something is worth 2k and he offers the high-end, he KNOWS it's worth more and he wants to get it. This is pretty true in most areas of life, whenever someone offers you more than you're expecting when they don't have to, you asked for way too little, and they're offering you more for their own conscience, even though you're still getting ripped.

Yes I tend to agree and one of the reasons I took a disliking to this show. this kind of thing happened all the time as I noticed and watched the episodes more closely. Of how rick and the guys realised value of items but downplayed them to prospective sellers and like almost made it as if he was doing them a favor. I guess when it comes to pawns shops that's is what they do. they realise you there selling cause you need the money and will take quick advantage of you especially if your not aware of the value of items your selling.

Serious question. If you believed 100% you could get $20,000 in an art auction, say, 3 months from now and your cost of capital is 20%, what would you be willing to pay (hint, there is no right or wrong answer--just something to think about)? Now, what if you were just 75% sure you could get $20,000 and 25% sure you could get only $5,000 out of it? Now, what if you had overhead of dozens of employees + rent, utilities, uniforms, and security among other things? How much then would you be willing to pay for a piece you thought could fetch $20,000 but wasn't sure of?
