Hi, I was the helper at Hazel Tindall’s workshop. It was lovely to meet you and all the other tour members. It looks like you had a great time from your videos. Hopefully see you again if you come to Shetland. Andrea xx

You would expect someone in the knitting community to recognize you, but a complete stranger in a jewelry store in another country is quite different! Good for you! Your podcasts are great!

Hey Ms. Rachel--love this video. As someone who lives on the other coast of Scotland (Western Isles), I recognized the general rugged landscape of Shetland. The sheep here produce wool that is often used to make our famous Harris Tweed. Now, as far as Lerwick, it's actually pronounced 'Ler-rick' and the W is silent. Kind of like Gren-nich when speaking of Greenwich in London. And crofts are basically smaller versions of farms and not as commercial as some farms can be. Crofts tend to be handed down in families. They used to be self-sustainable but that's mostly gone now and tend to have just one commodity: sheep or cows. This may be a generalization, but that has been my understanding.

Thanks for the info! My first instinct was to drop the W (I lived in the UK for my first master’s, so I already fumbled and learned from that phonetic rule 10 years ago lol!) but I was surprised to hear others on the island pronounce it with the W, so I adjusted course. I’ll have to reevaluate now!

Sounds like perfection! Honestly, I would have far preferred a longer time at Jamieson’s of Shetland. It’s my favorite, though seeing Ella and Sandra and Oliver at J&S would totally be a trip highlight. And the food…YUM!

Rachel, you have always been a ray of sunshine and inspiration! I would have SO much fun with you on one of your tours (or just sitting in a room knitting!). I will definitely sign up for your newsletter. Your coverage of the tour has been almost as good as being there with you. Looks amazing and yeah, the overcast, cold, grey weather is my soul. I love it! Looking forward to the next update too, thanks so much for bringing us along :)

Hi Rachel, loving your podcasts having just found you. I live in Aberdeenshire but have not yet made it to Shetland, you put me to shame 😂. A Croft is a small holding in Scotland , a much smaller plot of land than what we would call a farm.

Hello! So glad you're here and thanks for the kind words. Of course the meaning of croft is so simple - a quick Google would have done me good... but even that seems too much sometimes 😂

Really enjoyed your knitting tour. A croft is generally quite small and the word is used more in the Highlands of Scotland. It technically is a small farm. Down in the south of Scotland we only really talk about farms or a smallholding.

Hi again Rachael. Another great recap of our tour. The place we visited prior to Burra Bears is called The Outpost Burra. He is Australian, Louise was born on raised in Shetland. She also works at Lerwick Tourist Office. One of the most asked questions is, where is Jimmy Perez’s house.😂 Also, I’m such an introvert that I never went to after hours knitting circles. I just went back to my room and knitted there.😊

Thanks for providing that context Catherine! I hear you on going back to the room for some recharging time. I always told myself I'd knit once I got to the room, but I usually scoured Ravelry instead since I didn't have much of a signal outside of the hotel.

Croft is definitely a Scottish thing. I think it signifies more of a small independent farm/holding. I'm in North Yorkshire which is about 2 hours from the Scottish border. Oh, and I NEED one of those bears!! 😅xx

Ah, thank you! And yes aren't the bears just so cool and cute?!

My understanding of the definition of a croft is slightly different. (At least in the Hebrides and west Highlands where I lived) a croft is a small family farm that typically has a few different crops and often a small number of livestock. It's also on the same land as the house that the family lives in.

Listening to this I find it odd that Jamiesons and Jamiesons and Smith weren’t each given a slot in a knitting tour of Shetland as both are important businesses and deserving of a few hours each. I’d have made them a compulsory part of the tour and the jewellery an optional trip
