I love Buzzcocks. Amstell was definitely a double edged sword for the show, he pushed it so far with the guests which was very funny and made for record viewership, but at the same time it created a bad reputation within celebrity circles and made it hard for them to book guests.

It was so hilarious, which made me check his standup work, which is not nearly as funny. The same can be said about Jimmy Carr and Sean Lock: extremely witty quick thinkers. They thrive in this type of environment, but are less funny when they prepare the jokes.

If I recall correctly he was on the same season as Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goody, and he was comforting towards Shilpa and spoke with other house mates about how unfair Jade and her two lackeys were being towards Shilpa. To my recollection he didn't bully anyone..

They were some of the best episodes, but Bill left because his whole thing was utterly destroying certain guests, which isn't really his style. They struggled to get anyone on after a while, it almost destroyed the whole show.

leo it’s not so much that Noel disliked him. I think they were actually quite pally. But what Noel said was that Simon took it a wee bit far sometimes to the point that Buzzcocks was having a hard time getting guests as nobody wanted to get roasted by Simon. It was something I never understood. Not because Simon wasn’t merciless (he was), but Mark Lamar pulled no punches either.

@@tessarobins2451 No, I think Lamar was generally far softer on his actual guests than Amstel was. Many of his jokes were directed to the team captains. He was also far more perceptive in terms of how far he should go before backing off.

The show he did just after Amy Winehouse died still lives on in my memory. His opening line being "on reflection Amy, maybe it should have been yes, yes, yes" classic.

Amy died in 2011 and Simon stepped down from buzzcocks in 2009. He made that joke when Amy was alive and making a guest appearance on buzzcocks.

I think the saddest thing about watching this now, is that Amstell's kind of brutal humour just wouldn't fly at all on mainstream TV nowerdays. I remember watching these old episodes when they first aired and my stomach would hurt from laughing so hard. Not just because of Amstell's quick wit, but because it would humanise these celebrities somewhat and make them more relatable, like having banter with mates. Now everyone on TV has to be in a comfort zone and satire has to be heavily censored. Truly an end of an era.

To be fair tho - these were the funny bits. Sometimes it wasn't funny when they just called someone a c*nt for no good reason. It's no wonder they had trouble booking people after a while

to be fair, if you saw his BBC TV sitcom Grandma's House, you'll see he regrets quite how things turned out immensely. His persona on NMTB doesn't seem to match his self-loathing and self critical personality at all. However, he was brilliant on the show, pricking the pomposity of a number of guests
