***** Into Darkness was a solid film. Nothing mind-blowing, but entertaining enough, and certainly not a chore to watch. I can't say the same for Generations and Final Frontier. Trekkies trash Into Darkness so hard because essentially it rebooted, altered, and condensed Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock's hallowed plotlines. If considered in and of itself, without comparison to those two other movies, Into Darkness was legitimately a pretty strong film.

Nope, that was Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which was originally In Thy Image, the pilot of ST: Phase II. Two other Phase II episodes were made into TNG stories, The Child (Season 2) and Devil's Due (Season 5). THIS film was made instead of Starfleet Academy, with Young Spock and Kirk etc. Amazingly, THIS was better than what that one woulda been like.

Shatner: saves all the best lines for himself. Seems to be setting up one big action scene after another, then throws it away time and time again. Hires his own daughter to play his yeoman and a California valley girl as a Romulan. Leaves the woman that attacks him in the bar to drown. Never explains why Sybok is so stupid he thinks he'll find "God" on this planet. Hires David Warner, then gives him nothing to do. Etc.

For me, the movie was rather boring, even though it's one of my childhood movies. The God part was rather cool in my opinion and it had a lot of potential, but they screwed it by not explaining a thing about him and making him quickly destroyed by a klingon ship. Considering the immortal star trek assholes like Armus or the violence-feeding energy entity, I expected this sha ka ree "god" to be stronger.
@LordDavid04
@LordDavid04 9 жыл бұрын
xxlCortez It should have been a different story from the start. The basic premise should have been Sybok (who is not Spock's half brother, but a surrogate brother perhaps, fulfilling the childhood role of a brother for Spock who was an only child. The story would be that Sybok, rejected by both the Vulcan Science Directorate and Starfleet goes his own journey, a journey which leads him in his quest to find "god". Using supposed clues, he is lead to Nimbus III, so-called planet of galactic peace, but is plagued by the rebellion (of local Nimbus inhabitants) who seek independence from the failed Federation/Klingon/Romulan experiment (the planet was chosen as it intersects the 3 Neutral Zones). The story would follow the rebellion who fight amongst themselves (thus sparing the capital from siege) and without the numbers are unwilling to take on the capital (defended by loyalists and remnants of the combined taskforce initially sent to stop the rebellion). Sybok, upon uncovering the final clue to "god's" whereabouts, sets forth to unite the disputing fractions of the rebellion and combined take over the capital via a siege. This could have easily been the highlight of an otherwise special-effects limited film. Rather than a climatic space battle, we see much like the battle of Hoth in Star Wars: V Empire Strikes Back. A large land battle in the desert city of Paradise City (or a better named one), with dune buggies and the like, like in Mad Max 2: Road Warrior. The Federation, Klingons and Romulans respond to the distress signal of the ambassadors, with the Romulans being the ones who have setbacks, perhaps their ship sabotaged by a member of Sybok's cult? Thus leaving only 2 ships to rescue the ambassadors, Sybok counting well on the more easier target of the expected Federation ship. The transporters should not be malfunctioned at the start of the film, it should really be explained away as Nimbus III having an ionized atmosphere which naturally prevents beaming. The film then follows the botched rescue attempt, Sybok and his most loyal of followers taking over the ship, and the Enterprise going through a wormhole to reach the god planet at the center of the galaxy (as a way of explaining how the ship can travel 1,000's of light years within the span of a few days. They could have also used the wormhole bits from the first film as a way of showing this, remember we don't need to see the Klingons going through the wormhole, just a mention that they are following the Enterprise's trajectory, we see the computer monitor show that the Klingons have arrived as well later in the film). They meet god, find out he's not the real god, but someone who has been trapped on the planet, where his powers are useless (a Q analogy perhaps? With this "god" attempting to convince the others that his "powers" can be used if he gets onboard their starship), God attempts to kill Kirk, Spock and McCoy, with Sybok doing his sacrifice to save the 3. In effect we have a cult, a rebellion, a huge land battle at the start of the film, the search for god, the Klingons following the Enterprise (with the Romulan ship being disabled), finding god (who wants to escape his imprisonment) and the crew escaping after they find out that "god" is just an omnipotent being (a Q perhaps).
