The idea that all the Vulcans that get sent to starfleet are the loose cannon wildcards who get “reassigned to Antarctica”. Is hilarious to me.
@BluStreak16 күн бұрын
So, I’m not a huge Star Trek fan but…..does that mean Spock was too? Was he sent to starfleet or did he go willingly?
@Sylvie_without_surname16 күн бұрын
@BluStreak Good question. I believe Spock went willingly, though I’m not sure that was ever explicitly stated. With his mother being human and his father being an ambassador, he has ties to both Earth and Vulcan, though as I recall he was raised on Vulcan. Starfleet is probably an easier place to figure out your own identity, if you’re a child of multiple cultures, and is much more likely to value and celebrate the unique perspective of someone like Spock, or, indeed, T’Lyn
@GSBarlev15 күн бұрын
@@BluStreakIn both Prime and Kelvin timelines, Spock was offered a position at the Vulcan Science Academy, "in spite of his... disability" (being half-human). Upon receiving that condescension, Spock told the admission committee where to shove it (in not so many words) and joined Starfleet. This was especially devastating for his father, Sarek-the two wouldn't speak for years after-because his adopted human sister had been refused admission (which she desperately wanted) on the grounds that the VSA wouldn't admit _two_ of Sarek's "experiments."

T'Lynn is a terrible Vulcan, but perfect for Star Fleet, she is an early version of what the Vulcan/Romulan reconciliation would eventually look like, both highly logical, but also able to listen and enjoy their emotions without being overwhelmed. When she first arrived at Starfleet she saw it as a failure, a dismissal, but by the end of season 4 she had already realized that Starfleet was her future and she would grow more there than in a Vulcan ship.
@GSBarlev15 күн бұрын
Point of fact: T'Lyn is "Vulcan as a mother🦆er," and the Vulcan Science Academy could have greatly benefitted from her diversity in approach. She is cut from the exact same cloth as T'Pol and would have fit right in under the tutelage of Soval, Tuvok or Spock. Vulcans-especially the VSA/VHC-have been shown throughout the series' to be bigoted, close-minded and _very_ hostile towards neurodivergence and mental illness (see: Spock's dyslexia, Sarek's Bendii Syndrome), so it's possible that her captain reassigned her to Starfleet out of compassion-not wanting her to endure a hostile work environment and going someplace where she would be valued-but ultimately, I still resent that decision, because it should have been *hers* to make.
