The dynamite explosion spring is a very fondly remembered play feature from this theme. I feel like I had two Western sets that had that feature. I remember once using the money instead because of the absurdity of the idea of "paying for an explosion". Fun times!

I spent a lot of time in the early 2000s looking at Lego instructions online for sets from the 90s that I saw in the catalog as a kid or that were a bit before my time. I was so impressed by the exploding carriage in 6765 Gold City Junction that I had to build the me hanuam out of my own parts. Those old sets really did so much with the parts they had back then.

considering you can use any 1x2 tile, you could put in anything to set if off! controls from a spaceship, spyrius datapads, pages from a book, anything!

The colors of the minifigs are crucial for the visuals of these sets. Landscapes and buildings are all brown, sandy yellow or grey... So the green, red and blue clothes really pop and make it super interesting.

Hi Slug!!! I made a realization when building some modern Lego that I was hoping to share. I’ve noticed that as modern Lego sets have gotten more complicated, it’s made it exceedingly hard to casually modify them and make your modification not stick out like a sore thumb, as well as trying to recreate building techniques. Maybe I’m just not as good at Lego building as I think I am, but I think I’m probably better than the average target demographic member. I feel like I’m having to compete with the professional designers just to make something that fits in with the rest of a set or scene. What are your thoughts? Anyway, I’m excited for another Summer of Slug video :))

I've had that problem tremendously with new sets. It's why I prefer the old, easy to add onto!

Absolutely agree about that with modern sets! That can be more full-featured right out of the box, but much more difficult to casually modify later. 👍

You can see this really easily in the creator houses over the years. The earlier houses were basically just wall bricks, roof bricks and the extras like windows and doors. Now a wall might be some bricks then tiles and some sideways building on both sides.

That's the great trade-off that Lego has made over its entire history, and why for some, less is more. The increase in variety of shapes, sizes, and color of pieces have been great for realism and detail, but ultimately detrimental to delivering a cheaper, more creative play-experience. It's not a matter of "old" vs "modern" either, just look at 1960s vs 1970s vs 1980s lego sets. Each decade shows another step in this trend.
@Lordodragonss

Thats why I make my own with enough detail to tickle my fancy. New sets are filled with small unneceary pieces while missing actual cool and easy building techniques that kids can repeat.

I think one issue with modern sets is how the tides of battle always seam swayed in the heroes’ favour. It’s hard to see the heroes as underdogs when they’ve got a tank and a fighter jet and an army of minifigures compared to the bad guys who just get a couple foot soldiers and maybe a side build if they’re lucky.

Monkey King's ultra mech is one of the most noticeable examples. There's this giant mech, and then the tree bad guys on foot with one weapon each, sword, spear and clubs... against a giant robot? I'm not so sure (maybe they're incredibly powerful in the show?)

I really wish we could see a return of western that is done with an inclusive focus on native tribes (basically let them choose what their role, if any, is in the sets). The wild west is a great source of design and story ideas. Worst case i wanna see another spin on the western genre.

I've always wanted to see a Lego "Villages" as a City spin-off portraying more historical settings but in a very grounded way like what you'd expect from City or Town subthemes. It'd be a perfect vessel to explore the American frontier again

Great fun video, these features really are great! Using the dynamite piece to blow open the prison is amazing haha, though I’m not sure about the survivability of anyone actually inside the jail. Also love you using the Western LEGO Chess game theme, as that game had some great music themes. I love this era of LEGO where some faces look complex while also looking simple and innocent. That nose on Flatfoot Thompson always looks a bit freaky though imo lol

90s sets at some point were crazy packed with play features, LEGO used to surprise you with creativity of these, builds were simple leaving quite a bit to our imagination, it was a real fun playing and rebuilding, it was a damn TOY after all, these days after couple hours of building kids may find themselves too exhaused to play with it. 🤔

I own both of these sets from when I was a kid. They were indeed wildly fun and, as someone with a few more bricks available, offered a lot of expansion-possibility! oh boy, this double review really good the creative juices flowing. `It was a hot summer afternoon, Zack stood guard atop the town's lock-up trying his darnedest to ignore all the whining that Flatfoot Thompson was doing from inside. The Sheriff was tending to a visitor to town, that old Doctor Cyber fellow, seems like he was coming to warn the Sheriff about some nasty outlaws from out in his parts, wherever those were. Gosh darn it, why did the sun have to be so bright on the day he was working extra? He pulled his hat down to keep the sun out of his eyes, but as he kept watch, the boredom of staring out at the desert for hours on end started to set in. And as his eyes drooped ever so slightly, he failed to notice a figure approaching from the distance. "So what yer saying is that some spies stole some of yer gizmos and now you ain't allowed to go home?" The Sheriff, Wyatt asked as he took a sip of his coffee. "Oh yes, that about sums it up, I have a home away from home that Timmy's staying at for the moment, so that he can have some kind of a normal life outside of going everywhere with me or staying cooped up in my lab." Replied Doctor Cyber, who then let out a deep sigh. "Anyway, I wanted to place a bounty on these hoodlums, not for capture, they're much too well armed, but for information. If anyone sees or hears anything about the Spyrius, I'm willing to pay them $1,000." The Sheriff's eyes nearly bulged out of his head at the amount, but before anything else could be set, the entire building shook and there was a very loud noise. Rushing outside, they found Zack lying on the ground while Flatfoot Thompson stepped out from where the wall of the lock-up used to be, he joined with the one who had blown out the wall in the first place, Dewey Cheatum. "Thanks Dewey, but who the blazes is that?" Flatfoot asked, pointed to a new outlaw that he'd never met before who wore all black and had a bandana that when matched with his black hat made it all but impossible to see his face. "Oh, this is the newest member of our gang, cost me an arm and a leg, but he does the job just right." Dewey replied as the newcomer remained quiet. Meanwhile, Wyatt ran up to attend to Zack, "Zack! You alright partner!?" Zack pulled himself up "Just fine Sheriff, nothing's really hurt 'cept my pride." He then stood up and picked up his rifle from where he dropped it. "Now, let's try and round up those troublemakers before they get away." To which the Sheriff agreed, pulled out his revolver. Realizing what was about to happen, Doctor Cyber dived back inside as the firefight started. While Dewey and Flatfoot took cover the new quiet one moved forward before tossing a spare piece of dynamite at the Sheriff and his deputy, who dived out of the way, then a few moments later, nothing happened, and then over the next few moments, nothing continued to happen. Slowly looking up, the Sheriff realized with indignity that the fuse hadn't been lit in the first place! "Come on then, let's chase after 'em" was all he said about it. A few hours later, as the three of them, for Doctor Cyber apparently wanted to see if the bandits had talked to the spies at any point, were riding out on the open trail, when they ran into a couple men in uniform. "Hold on there stranger, where are you heading? The only thing that way is that hideout of Black Bart and his gang of thieves" "That's exactly why I'm going sir. I'm the sheriff of that town over yonder and some of Black Bart's gang busted out a no good outlaw we had locked up. So we're going to bring him back." Wyatt explained. "Well, then, we might as well go with you, five heads are better than three I'd say." The Lieutenant declared and the group rode off once more. It was just before sundown when they arrived. They couldn't see any of the outlaws, but that didn't mean they weren't being watched, suddenly there was a loud noise as a large barrel came tumbling down from the roof, curtesy of Dewey, who quickly fled inside the hideout. While Zack managed to dodge the barrel, the lower ranked soldier did not, knocking him flat on his back. Then, they saw Black Bart himself wheeling out a cannon, but before he could fire it, Wyatt and The Lieutenant fired on him, forcing him back into the hideout. As Doctor Cyber tried to duck into cover he the misfortune of running right into where Flatfoot was hiding for his part of the ambush. Fortunately he managed to catch Flatfoot off guard and unarmed. Before the outlaw to make for his gun, the good Doctor managed one good punch between the eyes and knocked the outlaw right out. Meanwhile, the rest of the group went the stairs into the hideout, but then Zack stopped them, "Wait, do y'all hear something" indeed he could hear a faint hissing noise, that he recognized only a moment later. "Dynamite! Everybody get down!" at his word, they all leapt off of the stairs just as they were blown to smithereens. But this left them right in the line of fire of the quiet one, who was manning the biggest gun the Sheriff ever did see. Seeing the massive gun pointed at the other, just for a moment, Doctor Cyber forget his rules about protecting history, and grabbed Flatfoot's gun, and fire on the Quiet one before the outlaw could fire on his friends. The quiet one fell all the way down the cliffside the hideout was carved into, and when he hit the ground, his head popped off revealing many sparking circuits and wires. "What in the tarnation is that?" the Sheriff asked, utterly perplexed. "Oh, that my friend is a robot," Doctor Cyber explained, "A Spyrius Robot to be precise, that means that those fellows I told you about have been here." As the group mopped up the rest of the outlaws, totally caught off guard by the defeat of their invincible rookie, who was reprogrammed by Doctor Cyber to be a second deputy for the town as a way to pay for his crimes, a figure in the distance watched though a highly-sophisticated set of binoculars that wouldn't be built for another thousand years. The Spyrius Chief scoffed, this venture had been a gamble, but at least now he knew more about his opposition. It seemed that he would indeed have to keep an eye for Doctor Cyber in the future, and the past. A moment later there was a crack of thunder as he went off to make his next deal.`

Interesting sidenote - Black Bart was the nickname of an old west highman that robbed lots of wells fargo stagecoaches! But he gained a reputation as a gentleman robber never stealing from passengers and he in fact never even loaded the weapon he carried as he didn't want to harm anyone! Really a stark contrast to the outlaw here by the same name who seems armed to the teeth!

One of our figures in my and my brothers' shared collection was a classic floppy armed skeleton (we were short one skull somehow), Flatfoot Thompson's head, and a top hat (we never had Dewey Cheatum, I'd have remembered that torso if we did). He was named Magic Bones, and was an evil magician whose hat keeps his head alive; he also had an invisible magic cat that would sometimes do things when he commanded it to, but was fickle because it was a cat (more often, it would grant what he asked for in a way that was detrimental to his immediate goal, such as when he said "Magic Cat, make me fly!" the cat lifted him up and threw him head first into a wall instead of lifting him onto the roof of the building he was trying to scale)

The Legends re-release of Sheriff's Lock-Up is how I was introduced to Western as a kid, and seeing the other sets on the Time Cruisers board game made me yearn for more when it was obsolete. Only a handful of years ago did I require this set, and around then the Bandit Hideout as well from another source, and enjoy them all over again. I do agree Sheriff's Lock-Up is one of the finest LEGO sets to have been released, the exploding jail never gets old to me. The giant barrel to hide in is fun. The build of the Sheriff's office is quaint in its simplicity. I'm also happy to have most of Gold City Junction to further expand my western town. The traps of Bandits Hideout are also wonderful. I even have an additional 2 curved baseplates for sandy roads in my beach town.

Amazing video!!! I have a long, happy, and nostalgic history with the Sheriffs Lockup. Around 10 years ago, I went to my older cousins house and I played with their old LEGO collection. One of which being the Sheriffs Lockup (they also had other Western sets like 6765 and 6761) Out of the dozens of sets they had, the Sheriffs Lockup was always my favorite, probably because it had the amazing jailbreak feature and an attractive design. My parents must of known that I loved it, because I got a copy of it for my birthday that very year! It happened to be the set that got me into collecting LEGO, and still sits on my display shelves to this day.

These were the only two sets I ever played with from this theme. It was a friends but I very much loved these both and always wished I got western sets but my parents were harsh and only let me get Space, City, Pirate, Technic, Aquazone and Islanders. Poor me lol

I had (most of) 6755 as a kid! It was already old at the time. So much fun to revisit it. I never knew the characters had names!

Just plain incredible these sets! I "only" own the fort set, which is also fantastic but the play features on these... WOW!

I actually came to know about the Western sets through Doug Vandegrift's Brickfilm "America: Outlawed" It's an absolute treat of a movie at a 30 minute runtime! Similarly his Pirate movie introduced me to classic pirates!

The Sheriff's Lockup is what got me into LEGO. Even roughly 20 years later, I still vividly remember my older brother showing me that dynamite explosion feature and being blown away by it (pun intended).

Lego western was never a theme I was into, it’s still not one of the ones I’m more fond of, but they DO have lots of charm!, no matter how simplistic they are they are still more charming then then almost ALL the 18 plus sets imo. I think I agree with you on Sharifs lock-up being the better of the two, though it always to haunts me to see a minifigure with a noise 😂 it’s too cursed for me, Timmy was charming, flat-foot is..uncanny!, both sets are great though! Especially for the time!, the photography is was also nice!. Have a wonderful day mate!😄😄.

I think Gold City Junction is my favourite Western set, it pairs really well with the Sheriff's lockup though

the western series was great. With the bandit characters designed the way they are, and the native americans not being the bad guys, this whole series gives me a strong "Lucky Luck and the Daltons" vibe. Sadly they did not create more sets... i never owned a single one of them 😢😅

I just learned something new. The Lego lone ranger theme featured a new mold for the revolver that was super detailed and accurate, and was retired after that theme for being too accurate!

Only 238 pieces!!!! That's impossible!!! Such a good set HAS to have more, you must be crazy! And Holy cow! I can't believe it, my treasure trove strikes again! The same tote of random LEGO that gave me pieces of Rock Raiders, Adventurers, and Alpha Team strikes again! Sheriff's Lock-Up must be in there somewhere; I have both the Sheriff's window and Dewey Cheatem's whole outfit! I think I took his head off to use his clothes as my own formal clothes. Wow! What a great couple of sets! Western really was better than anybody realized at the time! And what a great video! I kinda miss the stop motion, honestly, but seeing hands is fine, too!

I was certainly conscientious about the lack of stop motion animation here, but I often find that play features are better demonstrated with video to prove that there’s no tricks to it. 😊
