As a Frenchwoman, I cannot tell you how happy I am that the RLM guys have finally been exposed to Devil Story. It is an absolute monument of dreadful, low-budget French cinema; as a matter of fact, the creators of Nanarland (a French website dedicated to bad movies) fell in such deep love with it that they crowdfunded the release of this masterpiece on DVD (complete with bonus features...). What's pretty cool in the dvd edition is that we have a lot of insight in how and why the movie was made. Like, why the monster kills people in the beginning? Because they needed more runtime. So the guy became a serial killer for no logical story reasons. Also, he kills the director (the old man who asks for gas at the beginning). And the main actress straight up stopped her acting career after the movie because she was ashmashed of it. Good ending, she ended up a successfull businesswoman.

This is not merely a horse, but a mare - an embodiment of a materialized nightmare. The prolonged struggle between the elderly man wielding an infinitely loaded shotgun and the black horse serves as a metaphor for the protagonist's perpetual cycle of terror. The film's surrealist elements seamlessly blend with expressionist classical cinema, creating an immersive dreamlike atmosphere. Interestingly, the antagonist's Wehrmacht uniform, despite being allied with a Romani individual (a historically persecuted group), underscores the dream's inherent contradictions. Ultimately, this film is a surrealist work of art. Thank you for indulging in my musings.

Black horse is how traditionally maras or mares were depicted (compare: Nachtmahr/Nightmare, famous painting by Heinrich Füssli). Mares were probably based on the experience of sleep paralisys (the Wikipedia article on sleep paralisys even uses Füssli's painting as illustration). 3. If you want European "schlock" cinema I highly recommend Schliengensief's movies, usually starring Udo Kier, that mixed low quality, horror elements and commentary on Germany after the fall of Berlin wall.

apparently, according to wikipedia for zombie nightmare, if I understood it's notes right, John Mikl thor was not actually the first casting choice for the character. Zombie #2 was, but he was fired for eating all the craft service food, and Mikl Thor was cast to replace him. So its actually likely the film then was shot out of order, most of the zombie scenes were already shot, and they had yet to shoot the pre zombie scenes and a few of the zombie ones.

Believe it or not, I had to watch that last movie, with the horse, mummy, man/beast, etc, for a class in college. The class was “Zombies In Film and Culture”, actually an English 400 level course, and I cannot believe I’m now seeing it on RLM.. I remember my boyfriend and I were absolutely blown away by the movie, but I absolutely do not remember what the class discussion was, at all. My professor was Peter Dendle, who mainly was like a medieval specialist if I remember correctly, but also wrote a zombie movie encyclopedia, and taught that awesome class…

"I looked up Zombie Nightmare to see if Jon Mikl Thor's character had been recasted in the zombie role, and lol The role of Tony was originally given to bodybuilder Peewee Piemonte. Days into production, Piemonte was fired for eating all the craft services and the meals of crew members. Piemonte was replaced by Jon Mikl Thor, singer for the Canadian rock band Thor. Wrestler Superstar Billy Graham was originally cast to play Tony's father. On the day he arrived in Montreal, no one came to pick him up at the airport and Graham left after waiting ten hours." "Director Jack Bravman wanted to transition from adult films to horror. American cast and crew members were housed in an airport hotel with pornography being played on every television channel, and they noticed that Bravman's name appeared in the credits for many of the films. AND a couple of other fun facts: - the schlubby dad guy at the beginning is John Fasano, the co-director, who directed most of the scenes without Adam West - the kid at the beginning was his IRL stepson, you might also remember him as the demon-wolf-kid from 'Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare' (also directed by Fasano, and also featuring Jon Mikl-Thor). - Mike's original instincts were correct, the actor who played the coroner guy (Dean Hagopian) was doing his take on Columbo. iirc someone on the production mentioned Columbo in reference to the character and he took it too literally and just did his own kinda shit impression. - the punk kid/head asshole who gets impaled with the baseball bat went on to become a producer of the Night At The Museum movies, being by far the most successful of the cast (even Tia Carrere who's won two Grammy awards). - the chick who gets killed at the pool area lied and said she was 18, she was actually 15, and there was a topless scene that they obviously could no longer do. also the janitor guy is reading a copy of Fangoria. - Adam West was apparently a pleasure to work with, he was totally professional but not a diva, he saw they had limited funds and limited time with him and he worked super late through the night without complaint to get all his scenes done in like 2 days." redditedit
